Arsenal update: Higuain, Rooney and, err, Gareth Barry

By Stefano on July 3rd, 2013

So the Gonzalo Higuain chase drags on yet another day and still the Real Madrid player hasn’t put pen to paper and signed for the The Gunners. The Daily Mail has a theory why it is is taking so long and that is because no one wants to sign for Arsenal first.

The paper suggests that no one believes that the club will spend the money so Higuain, Rooney and Fellaini don’t want to be the marquee signing in case others don’t follow.

Here’s Martin Samuel in full flow on the matter.

Could it be that Arsenal are experiencing the same complication as Walker: they need to make a marquee signing to make others believe in their project, but somebody has to be the first to jump.
If Higuain signs, will Rooney warm to Arsenal, too? If Rooney and Higuain are bought in, who else would come to regard Arsenal as an option?

The problem is the club have spent so long as the poor relations among the elite, with so many unfulfilled promises of substantial investment, that the professional view is sceptical: when they see it, they’ll believe it. But who wants to be first?

Is he right? Well the Rooney deal seems just a little more likely after yesterday as The Sun, and others say clear the air talks between the England player and new United manager David Moyes haven’t gone well. The Sun says that Fergie number two Mike Phelan is convinced that Rooney is heading for the exit.

He says

Those talks will continue today but Phelan, who left his role as assistant manager at Old Trafford last month, believes both parties could agree a parting of the ways is for the best.

He added: “Somewhere down the line there will be words said, there will be meetings. They’ll see if it’s still alive and worth going for or they’ll call time on it.”

The Sun also has a storythat I doubt that will please many Arsenal fans. It suggests that put off by the huge fee that Everton are asking for Marouane Fellaini that Arsene Wenger has turned his attention to Gareth Barry as a possible player to fulfill the holding midfielder role. The Sun suggests that the 32 year old could be picked up for next to nothing too.

An insider said: “It looks like Arsenal are just weighing things up at the moment and they do have other priorities. But they know Gareth would do a good job for them.”

Arsenal update: Man City duo rumours, is Marouane Fellaini next?

By Stefano on July 2nd, 2013

Over the past few year Man City have regularly raided The Emirates landing the likes of Toure, Clichy and of course Nasri. But with quite a few players apparently now not part of new boss Manuel Pellegrini’s plans could it be time that the traffic went in the opposite direction?

There has been plenty of speculation about the future of Micah Richards over the past few weeks. The England defender seems to have been deemed surplus to requirements at The Etihad and a move to the club he apparently supports could certainly re-start his career.

Richards is predominantly a right back and could work out as solid replacement for Bacary Sagna if the Frenchman decides to move on. Alternatively by linking to Richards the team might be putting pressure on Sagna to sign a new contract. Who knows…

Meanwhile Arsenal are also being linked with another City defender Joleon Lescott. According to the Star the club are keen on the centre back who

‘has vowed to quit Manchester City unless he is guaranteed regular football.’

Apparently the England international will hold emergency talks with the Chilean coach when he reports for pre-season training with Manchester City next week, and depending on the outcome could push for a move away this transfer window.

“The situation is simple really,” a source told the Daily Star. “He wants to play and doesn’t want to spend next season sat on the bench.

“If he isn’t going to play regularly at City, then he can go to another club that will value him more.”

Lescott is certainly a classy defender and the rumour is that he could picked up for just £5 million – half of the mooted price for Swansea’s Ashley Williams.

Of course the interest in Lescott could be a smoke screen in a bid to get Swansea to reduce their price? HITC thinks that might also be the case with Arsenal’s bid for central midfielder Lars Bender. The website says it was move that was never likely to happen, but it might have the effect of the encouraging Everton to lower the price that they have put on their central midfielder Marouane Fellaini. We’ll have to wait and see on that one.

Five reasons why Arsenal will make big transfer announcements this week

By Stefano on July 1st, 2013

The last month or so has been a long and painful one for Arsenal fans as they have watched as potential targets have whizzed in and out of Arsene Wenger’s radar before deciding that they don’t fancy north London at all, or Arsene doesn’t fancy the size of their proposed wage packet – you decide.

However I think the phony war could be about to come to an end and and here are five reasons why.

1 Arsenal need to sign players soon – The team’s disastrous start to the 2011-2012 season was characterised by the fact that Wenger left most of his shopping to deadline day. He didn’t last year and it helped. And he won’t again this year. Arsenal need players embedded in the squad quickly, after all the team have the small matter of a Champions League qualifier on the horizon.

2 The Transfer window is officially lifted today – Ok, so you can make deals and sign players in June but it all becomes official today as the transfer widow begins. Expect to see a couple of mooted signings like Yaya Sanogo plus a few youngsters announced very shortly.

3 The Arsenal back room staff are back at work – The team are back from their well earned break today, tanned, rested and eager to get back to work. Deals, if they are going to to happen, can happen quickly now

4 One big deal must be ready by now – The hot money is obviously on Higuain, but you never know. The Marouane Fellaini discussions might be a lot further advanced than everyone outside of the club thinks.

5 Arsene Wenger has relocated the Arsenal fax machine – It hasn’t been used since January and was probably tidied away by the cleaner. But it is plugged in and ready to start whirring now. Hopefully.

Gonzalo Higuain’s Arsenal move is close says his agent

By Stefano on June 26th, 2013

The marathon race that is Gonzalo Higuain’s move from Real to Arsenal inched closer to the finishing line today with a quote from his brother who is also his agent.

Nicolas Higuain told Tutto Mercato Web: “Now that Tevez is signing for Juve, does that mean Higuain is closer to Arsenal? I think so.

“Juventus is a great club, but Gonzalo is too expensive for them. Napoli? They’re a strong team and a club that means a lot to Argentines.

“But having said that, I can’t deny that Gonzalo is now close to Arsenal.”

So is that a done deal now? Gunners fans are you starting to worry that all the energy that’s being invested into securing this deal has meant that others are slipping past?

Arsenal update: Real after Cazorla, Higuain news and Benjamin Mendy details

By Stefano on June 25th, 2013

Well we thought this was the summer it wasn’t going to happen, but it seems that several clubs are sniffing around some of Arsenal’s most high profile players. Like Laurent Koscielny who seems to be hinting that he is staying at The Emirates in spite of interest from a number of clubs.

But he isn’t only one. The Daily Star says that Real are planning a surprise move for Arsenal playmaker Santi Cazorla. The little Spaniard, who has at times been breathtaking this season, doesn’t sound however as if he is going anywhere.

He said

“In football you have to live in the moment,”

“I have three years left on my contract and I have not thought of anything like that. My plan is to continue at the club.

“Arsenal are treating me very well and I want to win a title with them. In football, you cannot predict the future at any time.”

The Higuain saga rumbles on, though the confirmation of Carlo Ancelotti as new manager of Real ought in theory to hurry up the player’s exit. A lot of sites, including SportstDirectNews, are predicting that the player will announce his move, almost certainly to Arsenal by the end of the week.

Finally HITC has the lowdown on French teenager Benjamin Mendy who The Gunners are allegedly trying to tempt away from Le Havre. Although he has been billed as a left back – which is odd given the prowess of the two left backs on Arsenal’s books – Mendy can play on the left side of the centre. Given that he is 6 foot 1 inch, this could well be why Wenger is targeting him, maybe as a Vermaelen replacement? Arsenal are reported to have bid £2.5 million for the player which Le Havre obviously don’t feel is anything like enough.

Arsenal update: Rooney, Jedvaj, Williams and more

By Stefano on June 21st, 2013

The Wayne Rooney to Arsenal story simply won’t go away. Even though the player is on holiday and has apparently hasn’t talked about his situation with Man United manager David Moyes there is lots of speculation today as top what is going through his mind.

One one hand the Daily Mail thinks that Rooney is coming to London but to the blue bit.

Sportsmail understands that Chelsea remain Rooney’s preferred destination should the unsettled England striker decide to leave United after nine years.

He believes he is more likely to fulfill his ambitions with the Europa League winners, while Chelsea are also more capable of matching his £250,000-a-week wages.

Rooney told United he wanted to go before the end of last season and is unlikely to change his mind despite the appointment of his old Everton manager David Moyes as Sir Alex Ferguson’s replacement.

Meanwhile the Express has minority Arsenal shareholder, and richest man in Britain no less, Alisher Usmanov urging Wenger to buy the United star.

Usmanov – who holds almost 30 per cent of Arsenal’s shares said: “He is a great player and joining the club would be great for Rooney and Arsenal too.”

Meanwhile the Gunners seemed to have cooled on their chase of Swansea’s centre back Ashley Williams. The Sun thinks that Wenger is still keen but won’t pay the £10 million that the Swans are asking for the 28 year old. The paper says that Arsenal might now turn their attention to Dinamo Zagreb’s Croatian wonder kid Tin Jedvaj.

The Arsenal boss is keen to pounce after Italian giants Roma failed with a £5m bid for the Dinamo Zagreb defender just days ago.

Jedvaj, 17, has already trained with the Croatian national team and is being courted by Serie A clubs. He would apparently cost the Gunners in the region of £6 million.

Finally footballfriendsonline runs the rule over Arsenal target Asier Illarramendi with a video that shows just how effective he was recently at the European Under 21 championship.

Arsenal update: Higuain deal gets closer, Rooney keen, Carroll miss

By Stefano on June 20th, 2013

Some very good news for Arsenal fans. The Telegraph is reporting that Real Madrid striker Gonzalo Higuain has agreed person terms with the London club. He will apparently earn £130,00 a week making him the highest paid player at the club.

Arsenal are expected to pay around £22 million for the player too which will also make him the club’s record signing.

So Arsenal fans? How exited are you about this one? Is Higuain the marque signing you were hoping for?

Or maybe you are more excited about Wayne Rooney? The Star is reporting that the Gunners are now favourites to land the England striker.

It says

A month ago bookmakers were offering a price of 50-1 on Rooney – who told Sir Alex Ferguson he wanted to leave United – signing for the Gunners.

But it’s been backed in ever since and it’s now just 6-4 with BetVictor for the England ace to link up with Arsene Wenger.

The paper also says that Rooney would favour a move to Arsenal over possible suitors PSG and Chelsea.

So does the Higuain signing make the Rooney move less or more likely? Well the jury is out on that one. Rooney is alleged to have been monitoring the players coming in to measure Arsenal’s ambition. But would Wenger then spend on two strikers especially after Rooney has made it clear that he wants to start up front and not behind a striker as he did this season at United?

On the slightly more bizarre note the Star is claiming that Arsenal attempted to make a last minute grab for Liverpool striker Andy Carroll. The paper reports that the Gunners were eventually put off by the cost of landing the player which it says would have been in excess of £60 million.

Podolski encourages Lewandowski to join him at Arsenal

By Stefano on June 19th, 2013

There have been a few stories circulating over the last month or to that Arsenal’s German forward slash winger Lukas Podolski would be leaving The Emirates.

Well that rumour has gone quiet and Podolski has been encouraging other players to come and join him in north London. Cheif among these is Borussia Dortmund striker Robert Lewandowski.

Podolski told Polish newspaper Polska The Times, which is reported by the Star: “He would fit ideally into our team.”

In spite of the Gunners’ alleged £70 million kitty it would be something of a coup to land the lanky Polish goalscorer. He might not be heading for Bayern Munich but Real Madrid, Manchester United and Chelsea have also expressed an interest in singing him.

Also with the Higuain deal now looking very likely it seems a long shot that Arsene Wenger would invest in two marquee strikers. But then again you never know…

Arsenal update: Ruben Garcia, Gonzalo Higuain and Asier Illarramendi rumours

By Stefano on June 18th, 2013

Well it is all going on in Spain. After plundering the country for Fabregas, Cazorla, Monreal, and in a roundabout way Arteta, Arsene Wenger is rumoured to be injecting some more La Liga blood into his Arsenal team.

The latest in the Higuain saga has been documented elsewhere with one Italian paper even picturing him wearing an Arsenal shirt. Might he be the first big Arsenal transfer announcement of the summer?

Or maybe that might be Levante’s Ruben Garcia? According to the Spanish daily Marca, Arsenal have made an enquiry regarding the player who has already admitted that he wouldn’t be averse to a move to North London.

The 19 year old is coming off the back of a great season in La Liga, but with Yaya Sanogo seemingly a cert to arrive at the Emirates might two young strikers be pushing it? He could cost up to 10m million Euros too. And besides there’s also Joel Campbell too.

The Daily Mail is suggesting that Arsene Wenger is also mulling over a move for Real Sociedad’s defensive midfielder Asier Illarramendi. The paper does say though that Arsenal might find themselves facing some serious comeptiion to secure the services of the 23 year-old with Barcelona and Real Madrid also set to pounce.

Illarramendi is currently on duty at the Under-21 European Championships, where a good performance could hike his price up a few more million.

Arsenal update: Higuain and Nani looking good, Payet on radar

By Stefano on June 17th, 2013

After a quite few days there’s bit of an avalanche of Arsenal related news this morning most of which revolves around Real Madrid’s Gonzalo Higuain.

After it seemed as if Juve were odds on to land the striker Arsenal now appear to have assumed pole position with several papers suggesting that the club have tabled a £20 million bid which apparently is a few million more than Juve were offering.

It now seems that Juve will spend the cash on previous Arsenal target Fiorentina’s Stevan Jovetic, and possibly even Man City’s Carlos Tevez.

The Standard does report though that the main problem with the deal has been the managerial situation at the Bernabeu with Real not yet in a position to confirm as replacement for Jose Mourinhio.

The 29-year-old is entering the final year of his contract at the Etihad Stadium and would command a fee of no more than £10m should talks with new boss Manuel Pellegrini conclude with his departure.

The online debate about whether Arsenal should be interested in Man United erratic winger Luis Nani is a likely to shift up a gear today with reports that the player and the club are on the verge of agreeing a deal which will see the Portuguese star move to North London for £8 million. The Metro says that Turkish club Galatasary who were also tracking the player have been priced out of the deal leaving the path clear for Arsene Wenger to take a gamble on a talented the controversial winger.

There may be more chance for Nani at The Emirates if Gervinho makes the move to Marseille which has been reported on by many sources this weekend.

But then again he may be competing for a place in the side with Lille winger Dimitri Payet who is reportedly to be keen to move to a club that can offer him Champions League football. The 26-year-old scored 12 times and provided an impressive 13 assists in 38 Ligue 1 appearances last season.

Stephan El Shaarawy would cost Arsenal or Man City 35 million Euros says Berlusconi

By Stefano on June 14th, 2013

With rumours that Milan’s Stephan El Shaarawy could be heading for a new club Silvio Berlusconi (sure I have heard that name before) has said that the player won’t go cheaply.

Berlusconi is saying that the player should have a price tag of 35 million Euros, a fee that first emerged in Tuttosport and has reverberating around the Italian press today.

There’s an implication too that Milan wouldn’t want to sell the player to another Serie A club which would rule out the likes of Napoli who may soon be looking to replace the irrepressible Edinson Cavani.

Meanwhile the player’s agent has put the dampeners on any move to Man City.

Roberto La Florio told SportItalia (reported here).

“Although we can say that the market is a bit crazy and anything can happen, that is indisputable. The boy is doing well at Milan and for us nothing has changed.

“Offers from City? Nobody has called me regarding this. He is Milan through and through and looks great with the Rossoneri.”

Arsenal update: Update on Williams, Villa and Gervinho

By Stefano on June 14th, 2013

Well we must be nearing the transfer deadline window proper – it opens on July 1st – as a lot of those apparent ‘done deals’ are now looking very wobbly, which in my book equates to selling clubs holding out for more money.

The one that saddens is me a little is the news coming from Swansea that Arsenal and the Welsh club have failed to get anywhere on the possible transfer of centre back Ashley Williams. I think a lot of Arsenal fans believe that the player would be a solid addition to the Arsenal defence especially if Thomas Vermaelen heads off. Sadly Swansea want £10 million and Arsenal are reputed to have only offered around £8 million. I wonder if this will be another Cahill with someone else sneaking in quickly and nabbing the player.

Williams is quoted as saying

“I play my football for Swansea City and now I’m just going away and looking forward to a holiday,”

“I’ve said before, I’ll take it (Arsenal rumours) as a compliment, it means you’re doing your job well. I’ve done that this time, I haven’t looked too far into it.”

Another player who also apparently won’t be joining Arsenal this summer is David Villa. Barca’s Sandro Rosell has moved to squash speculation that the Spanish striker will be leaving the club by saying.

“Until is otherwise the case, David Villa remains a Barca player and our desire is that he will remain so until next year.”

Villa’s contract runs out in summer 2014, so he could in theory stay on at the club until he is a few moths shy of his 33rd birthday.

I wonder too if valuations from Arsenal and Spurs have fallen well short of what the Catalan club were hoping.

Finally this morning there has been a lot of speculation over the future of Arsenal winger Gervinho. After a hit and miss season – well a couple in fact – the player is being linked with a return to France with Marseilles keen to secure his services.

This is a profile that interests us, yes. We want flank players, with dribbling, passing and scoring and Gervinho has this profile,” Marseille assistant coach Franck Passi yesterday.

Arsenal fans are you bothered if the Ivorain goes. He hasn’t exactly set the Premiership alight but there have been glimpses of his huge potential too.

Higuain too! Chelsea now chasing the same strikers as Arsenal and Real

By Stefano on June 13th, 2013

Here’s an interesting snippet coming out of Spain tonight. It seems that new Chelsea boss (that really doesn’t sound quite right) José Mourinho really might have it in for both Juventus and Arsenal. After rumours that he might be ready to pounce on want-away Fiorentina striker Stevan Jovetic (s target for both Juve and Arsenal) it now appears that he is also thinking about a move for Real Madrid’s Gonzalo Higuain! So Arsenal, Juve and now Chelsea are chasing the same pair of forwards!

The news comes from a Spanish radio station Cadena Cope and was reported on an Italian site here and loads of others too.

It might be quite credible as José Mourinho obviously worked with Higuain at Real and he is expected to sign a high profile striker this summer to compete with new signing Andre Schurrle as well as Torres and Ba.

Torres to Arsenal from Chelsea? Surely not…

By Stefano on June 13th, 2013

There are some rather wicked whispers around today about the future of of one Fernando Torres. The Chelsea striker has been the subject of much speculation recently with Barcelona allegedly lining up a £17 million bid.

Now however the SportsDirect News site is claiming that Barca have a rival for Torres – Arsenal.

The site says

Emirates boss Arsene Wenger is a huge admirer of the 29-year-old, and believes he could help him recapture the form that made him one of the most feared strikers in the world at Liverpool.

Couple that with the fact that none of Arsenal’s supposed targets seem to be too interested in the club means that the site has its story.

It also claims to have heard from a Gunners source : “The boss loves Torres. He knows how good he can be, and a deal could come off.

“Chelsea are looking at strikers, Fernando has become surplus to requirements and Arsene is ready to pounce.”

Well the Rooney story is bonkers enough, but Torres. He is still young enough at 29 to have a few good seasons left in him, he also scored 22 goals last season, not a bad tally.

But I think it unlikely that even if Arsenal were interested that Chelsea would sell him to their rival London club. Barca are one thing. The near-ish neighbours are another.

Ultimately though buying Torres would be a huge personal gamble for Arsene Wenger. Were it not to work out I think he would end up personally taking the blame for a transfer which while it clearly could be a sensational signing still represents one hell of a risk.

What do you think?

Arsenal still considering Turkish winger?

By Stefano on May 9th, 2013

With the summer window rapidly approaching it will be interesting to see how many names that were linked with Arsenal in the winter window are quoted for a second time.

One player who might get some serious attention from Arsenal is Atletico Madrid’s Turkish star Arda Turan.

His agent, Ahmet Bulut, hinted that the player was keen to move to London in the winter and now Turkish-Football has revived the story.

Bulut apparently said

“There are a few clubs interested, Liverpool are one, and so are Arsenal. There are no official or concrete offers at the moment but two clubs have spoken about wages.

“He is interested in working under Arsene Wenger because he is very good at working with young players, and Arda wants to work in England.”

The down side is that Atletico apparently value the player at 24 million Euros and his form – four goals and eight assists in all competitions this season – would suggest that he might not be worth that kind of figure.
