Arsenal update: Real after Cazorla, Higuain news and Benjamin Mendy details

By Stefano on June 25th, 2013

Well we thought this was the summer it wasn’t going to happen, but it seems that several clubs are sniffing around some of Arsenal’s most high profile players. Like Laurent Koscielny who seems to be hinting that he is staying at The Emirates in spite of interest from a number of clubs.

But he isn’t only one. The Daily Star says that Real are planning a surprise move for Arsenal playmaker Santi Cazorla. The little Spaniard, who has at times been breathtaking this season, doesn’t sound however as if he is going anywhere.

He said

“In football you have to live in the moment,”

“I have three years left on my contract and I have not thought of anything like that. My plan is to continue at the club.

“Arsenal are treating me very well and I want to win a title with them. In football, you cannot predict the future at any time.”

The Higuain saga rumbles on, though the confirmation of Carlo Ancelotti as new manager of Real ought in theory to hurry up the player’s exit. A lot of sites, including SportstDirectNews, are predicting that the player will announce his move, almost certainly to Arsenal by the end of the week.

Finally HITC has the lowdown on French teenager Benjamin Mendy who The Gunners are allegedly trying to tempt away from Le Havre. Although he has been billed as a left back – which is odd given the prowess of the two left backs on Arsenal’s books – Mendy can play on the left side of the centre. Given that he is 6 foot 1 inch, this could well be why Wenger is targeting him, maybe as a Vermaelen replacement? Arsenal are reported to have bid £2.5 million for the player which Le Havre obviously don’t feel is anything like enough.

Arsenal update: Higuain deal close, Payet buzz, Villa off to Spurs?

By Stefano on June 24th, 2013

There is still no hard news coming out of Madrid this morning, which means that several news sites are running with ‘Gonzalo Higuain deal gets even closer’ type stories. At least a couple of sites have claimed that an Arsenal entourage are in Madrid and that Wenger may be jetting out to join them soon.

Goal also says that Higuain’s father has confirmed that talks between Real Madrid and potential suitors Arsenal and Juventus are at an “advanced stage” regarding the striker’s transfer.

Gunners officials have travelled to Madrid in order to finalise a move for the 25-year-old with Arsene Wenger’s side looking to tie up a deal for just over €20 million, while the Spanish club are looking for a figure of over €25m. The Premier League club have already agreed a contract with Higuain that will start with a wage of €115,000-a-week.

The reason why the deal hasn’t go through is largely believed to be because Real Madrid are without a manager at the moment. So it may take a week more before it all gets finalised.

Meanwhile Touchlinetalk has the lowdown on another key Arsenal target Florent Dimitri Payet. The site runs through the career history of the Frenchman who can play as a winger or an attacking midfielder. Payet is said to be a selfless player on the pitch and notched up a very impressive 18 assists at Lile this eason. He can however have his immature moments too highlighted by his altercation with former teammate Blaise Matuidi and failing to turn up to training. It will be interesting to see how this on pans out.

Finally it seems that Arsenal’s interest in Barcelona’s David Villa has dwindled away to nothing. According to a report in El Mundo Deportivo on Monday morning Spurs boss Andre Villas-Boas has instructed new director of football Franco Baldini to close a deal for Villa.

The disappointment for Villa is that Spurs can’t offer the player Champions League football, this season anyhow. Arsenal can give the player that platform but seem to have lost interest in signing the prolific Barca striker.

Arsenal update: Marouane Fellaini deal in the balance

By Stefano on June 21st, 2013

So is the Higuain deal in the bag? In spite of the rumours about a late bid from Juve the London Evening Standard seems to think so. It says

All parties are confident Higuain will soon be joining the Gunners from Real Madrid.

Interestingly it also suggests that Arsene Wenger might be about to make a move for Arsenal’s other key summer target Marouane Fellaini.

According to the Standard

Arsene Wenger is prepared to break Arsenal’s club record transfer fee for the second time in a matter of days to sign Marouane Fellaini.

The Arsenal manager is considering activating Fellaini’s £23m release clause at Everton.

Once again the paper reiterates the sticking point is the price with Everton clinging on to their £23 million valuations and Wenger not sure if he wants to meet that fee.

The issue for Arsenal is that if the club wants Marouane Fellaini to be settled and ready for the new season they need to do the deal very soon. Admittedly Mikkel Arteta fitted in very quickly after his move from Everton two years ago in the central midfield berth. However this time round Wenger has some tricky Premiership games and the Champions League qualifier to factor in. So a fast move would make a lot of sense.

Higuain to Arsenal? Juventus are still in the hunt says their general director

By Stefano on June 21st, 2013

Just when it seemed that it was done deal and that Arsenal fans would be getting the marquee striker signing they crave comes the news that Juventus haven’t given up hope of signing Real Madrid’s Gonzalo Higuain.

In spite of rumours that the player has signed a £130,000-a-week contract to join the north London club and that Arsenal and Real were finalising the fee, Juve’s general director has said that he thinks the striker could still be bound for Italy.

Giuseppe Marotta told Italian television station Sky Sport Italia, which has been reported by The Star.

“Higuain? I do not want to say anything because there is still so much time left for things to happen.”

If the rumours are to be believed then time is the last thing that Morotta and Juve have.

So Arsenal fans is this going to be yet another player that slips through Arsene Wenger’s grasp?

Arsenal update: Rooney, Jedvaj, Williams and more

By Stefano on June 21st, 2013

The Wayne Rooney to Arsenal story simply won’t go away. Even though the player is on holiday and has apparently hasn’t talked about his situation with Man United manager David Moyes there is lots of speculation today as top what is going through his mind.

One one hand the Daily Mail thinks that Rooney is coming to London but to the blue bit.

Sportsmail understands that Chelsea remain Rooney’s preferred destination should the unsettled England striker decide to leave United after nine years.

He believes he is more likely to fulfill his ambitions with the Europa League winners, while Chelsea are also more capable of matching his £250,000-a-week wages.

Rooney told United he wanted to go before the end of last season and is unlikely to change his mind despite the appointment of his old Everton manager David Moyes as Sir Alex Ferguson’s replacement.

Meanwhile the Express has minority Arsenal shareholder, and richest man in Britain no less, Alisher Usmanov urging Wenger to buy the United star.

Usmanov – who holds almost 30 per cent of Arsenal’s shares said: “He is a great player and joining the club would be great for Rooney and Arsenal too.”

Meanwhile the Gunners seemed to have cooled on their chase of Swansea’s centre back Ashley Williams. The Sun thinks that Wenger is still keen but won’t pay the £10 million that the Swans are asking for the 28 year old. The paper says that Arsenal might now turn their attention to Dinamo Zagreb’s Croatian wonder kid Tin Jedvaj.

The Arsenal boss is keen to pounce after Italian giants Roma failed with a £5m bid for the Dinamo Zagreb defender just days ago.

Jedvaj, 17, has already trained with the Croatian national team and is being courted by Serie A clubs. He would apparently cost the Gunners in the region of £6 million.

Finally footballfriendsonline runs the rule over Arsenal target Asier Illarramendi with a video that shows just how effective he was recently at the European Under 21 championship.

Arsenal update: Higuain deal gets closer, Rooney keen, Carroll miss

By Stefano on June 20th, 2013

Some very good news for Arsenal fans. The Telegraph is reporting that Real Madrid striker Gonzalo Higuain has agreed person terms with the London club. He will apparently earn £130,00 a week making him the highest paid player at the club.

Arsenal are expected to pay around £22 million for the player too which will also make him the club’s record signing.

So Arsenal fans? How exited are you about this one? Is Higuain the marque signing you were hoping for?

Or maybe you are more excited about Wayne Rooney? The Star is reporting that the Gunners are now favourites to land the England striker.

It says

A month ago bookmakers were offering a price of 50-1 on Rooney – who told Sir Alex Ferguson he wanted to leave United – signing for the Gunners.

But it’s been backed in ever since and it’s now just 6-4 with BetVictor for the England ace to link up with Arsene Wenger.

The paper also says that Rooney would favour a move to Arsenal over possible suitors PSG and Chelsea.

So does the Higuain signing make the Rooney move less or more likely? Well the jury is out on that one. Rooney is alleged to have been monitoring the players coming in to measure Arsenal’s ambition. But would Wenger then spend on two strikers especially after Rooney has made it clear that he wants to start up front and not behind a striker as he did this season at United?

On the slightly more bizarre note the Star is claiming that Arsenal attempted to make a last minute grab for Liverpool striker Andy Carroll. The paper reports that the Gunners were eventually put off by the cost of landing the player which it says would have been in excess of £60 million.

Podolski encourages Lewandowski to join him at Arsenal

By Stefano on June 19th, 2013

There have been a few stories circulating over the last month or to that Arsenal’s German forward slash winger Lukas Podolski would be leaving The Emirates.

Well that rumour has gone quiet and Podolski has been encouraging other players to come and join him in north London. Cheif among these is Borussia Dortmund striker Robert Lewandowski.

Podolski told Polish newspaper Polska The Times, which is reported by the Star: “He would fit ideally into our team.”

In spite of the Gunners’ alleged £70 million kitty it would be something of a coup to land the lanky Polish goalscorer. He might not be heading for Bayern Munich but Real Madrid, Manchester United and Chelsea have also expressed an interest in singing him.

Also with the Higuain deal now looking very likely it seems a long shot that Arsene Wenger would invest in two marquee strikers. But then again you never know…

Arsenal update: Higuain and Nani looking good, Payet on radar

By Stefano on June 17th, 2013

After a quite few days there’s bit of an avalanche of Arsenal related news this morning most of which revolves around Real Madrid’s Gonzalo Higuain.

After it seemed as if Juve were odds on to land the striker Arsenal now appear to have assumed pole position with several papers suggesting that the club have tabled a £20 million bid which apparently is a few million more than Juve were offering.

It now seems that Juve will spend the cash on previous Arsenal target Fiorentina’s Stevan Jovetic, and possibly even Man City’s Carlos Tevez.

The Standard does report though that the main problem with the deal has been the managerial situation at the Bernabeu with Real not yet in a position to confirm as replacement for Jose Mourinhio.

The 29-year-old is entering the final year of his contract at the Etihad Stadium and would command a fee of no more than £10m should talks with new boss Manuel Pellegrini conclude with his departure.

The online debate about whether Arsenal should be interested in Man United erratic winger Luis Nani is a likely to shift up a gear today with reports that the player and the club are on the verge of agreeing a deal which will see the Portuguese star move to North London for £8 million. The Metro says that Turkish club Galatasary who were also tracking the player have been priced out of the deal leaving the path clear for Arsene Wenger to take a gamble on a talented the controversial winger.

There may be more chance for Nani at The Emirates if Gervinho makes the move to Marseille which has been reported on by many sources this weekend.

But then again he may be competing for a place in the side with Lille winger Dimitri Payet who is reportedly to be keen to move to a club that can offer him Champions League football. The 26-year-old scored 12 times and provided an impressive 13 assists in 38 Ligue 1 appearances last season.

Stephan El Shaarawy would cost Arsenal or Man City 35 million Euros says Berlusconi

By Stefano on June 14th, 2013

With rumours that Milan’s Stephan El Shaarawy could be heading for a new club Silvio Berlusconi (sure I have heard that name before) has said that the player won’t go cheaply.

Berlusconi is saying that the player should have a price tag of 35 million Euros, a fee that first emerged in Tuttosport and has reverberating around the Italian press today.

There’s an implication too that Milan wouldn’t want to sell the player to another Serie A club which would rule out the likes of Napoli who may soon be looking to replace the irrepressible Edinson Cavani.

Meanwhile the player’s agent has put the dampeners on any move to Man City.

Roberto La Florio told SportItalia (reported here).

“Although we can say that the market is a bit crazy and anything can happen, that is indisputable. The boy is doing well at Milan and for us nothing has changed.

“Offers from City? Nobody has called me regarding this. He is Milan through and through and looks great with the Rossoneri.”

Higuain too! Chelsea now chasing the same strikers as Arsenal and Real

By Stefano on June 13th, 2013

Here’s an interesting snippet coming out of Spain tonight. It seems that new Chelsea boss (that really doesn’t sound quite right) José Mourinho really might have it in for both Juventus and Arsenal. After rumours that he might be ready to pounce on want-away Fiorentina striker Stevan Jovetic (s target for both Juve and Arsenal) it now appears that he is also thinking about a move for Real Madrid’s Gonzalo Higuain! So Arsenal, Juve and now Chelsea are chasing the same pair of forwards!

The news comes from a Spanish radio station Cadena Cope and was reported on an Italian site here and loads of others too.

It might be quite credible as José Mourinho obviously worked with Higuain at Real and he is expected to sign a high profile striker this summer to compete with new signing Andre Schurrle as well as Torres and Ba.

Torres to Arsenal from Chelsea? Surely not…

By Stefano on June 13th, 2013

There are some rather wicked whispers around today about the future of of one Fernando Torres. The Chelsea striker has been the subject of much speculation recently with Barcelona allegedly lining up a £17 million bid.

Now however the SportsDirect News site is claiming that Barca have a rival for Torres – Arsenal.

The site says

Emirates boss Arsene Wenger is a huge admirer of the 29-year-old, and believes he could help him recapture the form that made him one of the most feared strikers in the world at Liverpool.

Couple that with the fact that none of Arsenal’s supposed targets seem to be too interested in the club means that the site has its story.

It also claims to have heard from a Gunners source : “The boss loves Torres. He knows how good he can be, and a deal could come off.

“Chelsea are looking at strikers, Fernando has become surplus to requirements and Arsene is ready to pounce.”

Well the Rooney story is bonkers enough, but Torres. He is still young enough at 29 to have a few good seasons left in him, he also scored 22 goals last season, not a bad tally.

But I think it unlikely that even if Arsenal were interested that Chelsea would sell him to their rival London club. Barca are one thing. The near-ish neighbours are another.

Ultimately though buying Torres would be a huge personal gamble for Arsene Wenger. Were it not to work out I think he would end up personally taking the blame for a transfer which while it clearly could be a sensational signing still represents one hell of a risk.

What do you think?

Is Fellaini the new Zaha? The next player Arsenal are going to miss out on?

By Stefano on June 13th, 2013

So Marouane Fellaini is apparently keen to move to Arsenal, but it hasn’t happened yet because Arsene Wenger is reportedly reluctant to trigger his £23million release clause.

So says the Metro this morning, which also adds

The Gunners have been strongly tipped to make a move for the Belgian international, but Goodison Park sources claim no inquiry has yet been lodged.

So Arsenal’s inability to actually sign a player looks like spilling over into the summer window with Wenger once again cautious with the cash and moving so slowly that he runs the risk of leaving the door open for other clubs.

Of course it could be that he doesn’t rate Fellaini that highly or he has another player in mind, but this saga is certainly starting to irritate Arsenal fans.

The manager’s indecision has also been highlighted by The Express which today revealed

Arsenal opted against signing Crystal Palace’s Wilfried Zaha before he went on to join Manchester United in January.

Ron Noades told the paper, When Steve Parish sold Zaha I was mildly involved in it as I tried to get Arsenal to buy him, but they were not interested.

“I spoke to David Dein as I did not want Zaha to go to Manchester United, I wanted him to stay in London.

“I just thought he was an exciting talent.”

So is Arsene Wenger’s reluctance to spend his war chest starting to annoy you?

Arsenal update: Stephan El Shaarawy, Nani and Lorenzo Melgarejo

By Stefano on June 12th, 2013

As one door closes…Just as it seems that Arsenal are about to lose out to Juventus on two of its main transfer targets comes news that the club may have some exciting new options.

The big one is of course AC Milan’s 20 year old striker Stephan El Shaarawy.

The Indie reports that the Milan club’s vice-president Adriano Galliani has indicated the club may sell striker Stephan El Shaarawy, who has been linked with Napoli, Manchester City and Arsenal.

The 20-year-old scored 16 times for the Rossoneri before Christmas and although his record in front of goal dropped off after the January arrival of Mario Balotelli from Manchester City, he is still regarded as a great prospect.

The downside for Arsenal fans is that Man City are also keen on the youngster, but then City have been linked with a lot of high profile strikers recently (as have Arsenal) so El Shaarawy may end up being an option. For now though the hot money is on him replacing Edinson Cavani at Napoli.

One rumour that refuses to die is the possible transfer of Nani to Arsenal. The player seems to have been deemed surplus to requirements at United and Wenger is known to be a fan. There were rumours of deal in the winter windows too. Now other clubs are sniffing around most notably Galatasary, and the rumour is that Manchester United will accept a bid of £8.5m for the player.

Given that he is just 27 years old and in theory entering his prime, that sounds like a bargain. Maybe Arsene will be tempted?

Finally Arsenal are said to have made inquiries about Benfica’s Paraguayan defender Lorenzo Melgarejo.

“Arsenal and Fenerbahce have enquired about Melgarejo. But so far there has been nothing concrete,” his agent told Radio Monumental.

Oddly Melgarejo is a left back and Arsenal have two pretty good players on their books for that position.

Higuain and Jovetic set to snub Arsenal. So why can’t they sign a striker?

By Stefano on June 12th, 2013

I think most Arsenal fans have by now given up on the possibility of the club securing Fiorentina’s Stevan Jovetic, but the Gonzalo Higuain saga has rumbled on and it seemed as if the club was in a good place to tempt the Real Madrid striker to come to the Premiership.

But if today’s Metro is to be believed it sounds like Arsenal have been mugged by the Old Lady – twice!

Arsenal are set to lose out on another striker to Juventus, with the Italian side closing on an instalment-based deal for Real Madrid’s Gonzalo Higuain.

According to Italian paper Gazzetta dello Sport, Madrid are to allow Juve to pay for the striker in three or four instalments following a meeting between the two clubs.

The paper also says that almost everything is in place apart from the transfer fee. In what might give Arsenal fans a sliver of hope Madrid want €30m, but Juve have so far only offered €22m.

So what next for Arsene Wenger and Arsenal then? I wonder if it might be back to Premiership and that double raid on Swansea to land both Ashley Williams and Michu?

And I wonder how Gunners fans will feel? Both players are high quality with a proven track record in the Premiership. But are they the marquee signings that were promised by Ivan Gazidis?

I do wonder if Arsenal’s laid back approach (or dithering in the transfer market if you are being cruel) has cost them. It seems crazy that Juve will now have three world class strikers on their books, yet Arsenal are struggling to sign one. Maybe it is a reflection of how far the club’s stock has fallen in recent years that they can’t land quality signings.

Or maybe is is all about cold, hard cash. Juve is offering the players better deals and even with that huge chunk of cash in the bank, Arsenal don’t seem to want to match what the Italians are offering.

Spoof alert – ‘Man Utd ‘Confirm’ Robert Lewandowski signing on club website,’ yeah right!

By Stefano on June 11th, 2013

So Man United are very close to signing Borussia Dortmund’s Polish striker Robert Lewandowski?

In fact they apparently trailed the news on their website earlier on today.

The post didn’t escape the eagle eye of who ate all the pies readers who took this screen grab.

lewandowski-man-utd

Weirdly the post was pulled not long after.

Well that’s the story, but it never existed in the first place. It is quite a clever spoof.

But what does the fact that it is so believable tell us?

Check this out.  And if it is about to happen what on earth is Wayne Rooney thinking?
