Stella McCartney Menswear? Yes, Please!

By Will Reid on May 8th, 2009

stellamenswearSince turning up at the Met’s Costume Institute Gala with a trinity of her Hollywood girlfriends, Stella McCartney has had a whirlwind week involving everyone from Simon Doonan (creative director of Barneys) to Michelle Obama.

While chatting to the gloriously over-the-top Doonan, Stella was asked about lending her ethical hand to a menswear collection. “Yes, I would love to!”- so what can we expect? I’m hoping for vegan-leather brogues and penny loafers, baggy suit jackets, chunky patterned knits for men, modern shapes and shirts in innovative fabrics.

McCartney, herself, spoke recently about her love of menswear: “I’ve always been a bit obsessed with men’s tailoring. When I was in St. Martins, I’d take time out at night and go work on Savile Row. I was always influenced by my mum and dad’s wardrobe and they always had really cool bespoke suits.”

I can’t wait! (Just no lace jumpsuits, please!)

Jorg Gray watches get Barack Obama seal of approval

By admin on March 23rd, 2009

jorg gray barack obama watch presidential.jpg

We’re all aware of the implications of Barack Obama’s style choices and now he’s landing a little presidential sparkle to watch company Jorg Gray.

Obama received the watch as a gift from his security team in 2007 and has been spotted wearing the timepiece at official functions ever since. The Jorg Gray company, used to selling their watches for the corporate gift market have set up www.barackswatch.com to make the most of the association. It’s available for $325, which for a fancy watch is a pretty good price and in 40 years’ time will make a great piece of memorabilia.

‘Neck of the State’ takes Obamarama to next level

By admin on February 17th, 2009

barack obama neck of the state.jpgClick image to enlarge

One of the things I’ve learnt writing for Brandish is that menswear is all about the details, but this really takes the biscuit.

Elevating the levels of Obamarama to extreme Neck of the State have taken it upon themselves to chronicle nearly every tie the US president has ever worn, all available to view in the handy tie gallery. The purpose of the site is apparently to find meaning in Barack Obama‘s choice of neckwear and extrapolate some political insights from said neckwear. Good luck boys!

Barack Obama on the cover of February’s GQ

By admin on January 27th, 2009

barack obama GQ February09.jpg

By my calculations Barack Obama has now racked up his third GQ cover which isn’t bad going for someone who’s only just been inaugurated. This cements his official position as probably the most stylish president America has ever had. I wonder if we’ll get bored of the suit by summer though? Fingers crossed for some relaxed holiday pap snaps and the obligatory grey marl jogging in DC shots.

Kanye West’s mullet: love it or hate it?

By admin on January 23rd, 2009

Kanye West revealed his astonishing haircut recently on a TV performance to celebrate Barack Obama’s inauguration. We’ve seen the afro hat but the afro mullet is a new one on me, the slightly enlarged back-section is kind of mirth-making but I have to applaud Kanye for his fashion bravery. What do you think of his hairstyle? Take our poll after the jump!

Presidential Major Moment = Red Tie, Obama follows suit

By Will Reid on January 21st, 2009

barack obama inauguration red tie suit.jpg

I doubt I need to give any background to the ‘Presidential Major Moment’ currently hitting headlines around the world. Looking through pictures of President Obama’s (how unbelievably cool is that?!) inauguration, I couldn’t help but let my mind wonder onto more sartorial matters. It struck me that while the new First Lady was rocking a very diplomatic Isabel Toledo (Cuban-born, American-based designer) outfit, Barack looked rather bland in his suit and red tie. But it appears that this outfit is a rather well-worn fashion formula…

Kwame Boyce-Deacon gets first ever Barack Obama haircut

By admin on November 12th, 2008

Kwame Boyce Deacon barack obama haircut.jpg

Kwame Boyce-Deacon is going to go down in history as the first person ever to get a Barack Obama haircut. The detailed do was the work of Clint Rainford, a barber from Montsho‘s hair salon in Leicester. Rainford said: “I knew at the start of the campaign that Obama would be voted president, so I kept a photo ready to do this”. The haircut features Barack Obama’s face and name and took 45 minutes to do which is a damn sight quicker and more appealing than your average salon do. 14-year-old Kwame Boyce-Deacon said: “He’s a really good role model and everybody is talking about him, I think he’ll do well in America”.

Hopefully Kwame’s haircut will inspire a sea of Obama-heads, maybe there could even be a presidential tableau, a family scene or a struggle for the flag with John McCain and Sarah Palin.

Obama. True, true

By Jonathan Smith on October 28th, 2008

Avid Brandishers will know that we have more than a little soft spot for the man who looks really ruddy likely to be the next U.S President: Barack Obama, so it comes as no surprise that, yes, this is another Obama related post. Though this is not really in any way related to fashion it has been doing the rounds on many of the fashion and culture websites so I thought I’d give it it’s due here on old Brandles.

This short film by 60Frames Entertainment is a pro Obama take on that old main stay of phone answering hilarity: the Budweiser “Wassup” advert. This ad is pretty darned funny even though my memories of the inspiration are tainted by living through a period of my life where I can’t remember making a phone call that wasn’t answered with “WASSSSSSSSAAAAAAAAAHHHHHH!!”

Political Fashion Cont. – Josh Brolin in Interview November 2008

By Will Reid on October 15th, 2008

A political campaign seems to be the ‘It’ accessory of this season. After Tyra Banks posing as Michelle Obama in September’s Harper’s Bazaar, Interview has pulled in Josh Brolin to rock the presidential trend for their latest cover. Josh is actually playing President George Bush in an up-coming film, titled ‘Bush,’ directed by Oliver Stone. However, on the cover he is photographed by Mikael Jansson.

Do you think that the fashion industry is taking the politics trend too far or do you think it’s a necessary evil at a time like this. Tell us on our Facebook page!

The Obama Outfit Continues- Benji Madden

By Will Reid on October 13th, 2008

I want Barack Obama to become the President of the USA. I do. Honestly.

However, telling you guys is enough for me and I don’t feel the need to have his name plastered across each of my outfits. Benji Madden turned up to a Diesel’s 30th Birthday in New York having heavily invested in the trend for Obama-slogan clothes and his political tuppence worth came in the form of a print tee.

Obama belt, the iPhone for your waist

By Jonathan Smith on October 9th, 2008

frontImage.jpg

It has been a few weeks now since I last posted something Obama related, not that the fashion world hasn’t been punctuated almost daily with a new label pushing the Obama cause with some special edition T-shirt or sneaker- something that has been unheard of for any other Presidential Candidate. Could you really see Clinton’s face on the toe box of a Dunk? Neither can I, Monica Lewinsky’s box on the other hand… Ho-ho-ho, I jest. It has got to the stage now where you could have an entire weeks worth of wardrobe clad head to toe in top fashion brands bearing the visage of Barack.

Andre 3000- I’d Vote Just For One Of Your Bow-Ties…

By Will Reid on October 2nd, 2008

Andre Benjamin (also known as Andre 3000) is taking part in the latest ‘Declare Yourself’ campaign which urges American youths to cast their vote as to who should be the next President of their country. Christina Aguilera and Jessica Alba also star in the campaign but it’s Andre’s image that has caught my attention.

Gagged with one of his own bow-ties, the campaign tells that “only you can silence yourself.”

The Cainturian Candidate

By Jonathan Smith on September 25th, 2008

upperplayground_caniancandidate_tshirt.jpg

The United States Presidential Election fascinates me for many reasons, one of which is the coverage the candidates (mostly our boy Obama) are getting from the fashion scene, in particular t-shirt companies. This is the latest from Upper Playground and is, like most (if not all) of the street style scene, towing the Democratic line.

“There was a time when John McCain would speak off the cuff, on record, and in plain view of his traveling press corps. He was the “maverick,” with the ongoing campaign to rid the Republican Party of its dependence on cultural wars and right-wing religious zealots. He was a honored POW. He wanted to respect Geneva Conventions. He even wanted to select Connecticut Sen. Joe Lieberman as his running mate in these elections.

Barack Obama and Terry Richardson- Better Than Stefano Pilati in Interview?

By Will Reid on September 17th, 2008

terry-richardson-obama-photo.jpgWhen I saw this image on Hypebeast this morning, I instantly wanted to put it on Brandish and have it sent right round the world on some type of banner. Unfortunately, I found out 5 minutes later that the hotel I’m staying at (Grand Hyatt Mumbai,) has given the entire floor above me to a call centre which means that it takes my computer about half an hour to Google something and the thought of uploading a picture onto Movable Type almost brings me to tears.

Anyway here it is: a picture sure to go down in fashion history.

Obama watch 2008- “RocknRolla” world premiere

By Jonathan Smith on September 2nd, 2008

rex_796661f.jpg[Click image to enlarge]

Some more Barack action for you after last weeks “O-Face” debacle where I, possibly incorrectly attributed the inspiration for the Barack “O-Face” Obama t-shirt to that scene in “Office Space” and was subsequently correct by Jason whose explanation does make more sense. In my defense may I say that on the UNDR-CRWN website “Office Space” is attributed as the inspiration for said T, so you know I’m not just making this stuff up. Just saying.

Tit for tat over I draw your attention to the t-shirt Idris Elba was wearing for the new Guy Ritchie film “RocknRolla” which premiered in London last night. Big Driis the Londoner was showing his support for the Democrat candidate in highly under dressed form, looking more like he was repainting his shed rather than on the red carpet at a world premiere. Someone needs to set a dress code, seriously. Scruffiness aside this is another example of Obama’s visage penetrating into pop culture in a way that is unprecedented for a presidential candidate. If Barack wins in November will he be the coolest president the world has ever seen? Because we are all whole heartedly buying into the brand Obama.

Others who graced that red carpet last night looking sharper than Idris included Guy Ritchie, Madonna- who wore more than a leotard an act which our eyes thank you for Madge, Gerrard Butler, Thandie Newton, Toby Kebbell and Leon Jackson to name but a few.
