Brad Pitt, male, is new face of ladies’ Chanel No. 5 perfume

By Gerald Lynch on May 9th, 2012

Marilyn Monroe, Nicole Kidman and Audrey Tautou. What do they all have in common? Well for starters, they’re all women. Obvious one that. And all beautiful. No points for spotting that one either. But, however, they’ve all also been at one point or other in their careers the face of Chanel No. 5 perfume.

Well, as of today, you can now add Brad Pitt to that list of celebs who’ve attached their faces to the most famous of ladies’ scents.

The thing is, Brad’s harbouring a deep, dark secret. Underneath those wavy blonde locks, piercing blue eyes and striking features, the Se7en and Benjamin Button star  is…actually a man!

That certainly sets Mr Angelina Jolie apart from his predecessors, and marks a bold new direction from Chanel’s marketing department.

Confirming the news in a press release today after rumours began circulating yesterday, Pitt is the first male face of the iconic perfume. A full blown ad campaign including a UK TV advertising spot is to follow in the Autumn, with Pitt picking up a cheque with a tidy seven-figure sum inked onto it.

Though Pitt’s the quintessential ladies-man and multi-generation spanning heatthrob, the 48-year old is still an odd choice by the brand, leading some to speculate that sultry Jolie may be making an appearance in the campaign at some point too.

“Hang on, aint this a site about men’s stuff, guvnor? What’s this gotta do with us blokes?” I hear you cry!

And you’d be right. With Pitt being the kind of guy that women want to be with and men want to be, there’s plenty of speculation that Pitt’s appearance with Chanel could be the start of a massive push from the brand into the male sector.

Come Christmas, you and your missus both could be unwrapping a bottle of scent sold by Pitt’s lovely mug.

GOOD BEARD, BAD BEARD: Is facial hair sexy?

By Gerald Lynch on March 14th, 2012

Razors at the ready folks; a new scientific study claims to have proven that your chin chaff is about as attractive as draping a mangy cat over your face and then combing yesterday’s porridge through it.

OK, so that may be a tad extreme, but there’s a fair amount of research backing up the anti-beard brigade this time. Haven’t we spent the last few years following in the footsteps of bands like Kings of Leon and Fleet Foxes with a “back to nature” look? What else goes with the wardrobe full of plaid shirts and hunting accessories we’ve all been collecting for the last half a decade?

Without going too deep into the specifics of the Behavioural Ecology journal, which has re-ignited the debate, cultivating all that fur seems to have been for naught. The journal’s researchers asked 127 New Zealand females and 100 ladies of Polynesian decent from Samoa for their opinions on the facial hair of 10 men each from their own race (apparently the island of Samoa hasn’t been all that westernised over the years, and produces good subjects in terms of those who haven’t been too influenced by western media views on beauty). Though the Samoan test subjects were more forgiving, on the whole, the study showed that beards are out.

The conclusions drawn were, as you’d expect, a hodge-podge of evolutionary theory (there was mention of the importance of lions’ manes at one point!), finding that, on the whole, beards merely “augment perceptions of men’s age, social status, and aggressiveness, but not attractiveness”.

On the totally non-scientific filpside however, having a chat with my female friends suggested that the blokes used as bearded/non-bearded examples in the study weren’t exactly Brad Pitt to begin with, which may go some way towards explaining why so few found the guys attractive in the first place.

Which compelled us to do a short study of our own. Called “Good Beard, Bad Beard” we’ve pulled together a handful of celebrities who, for better or worse, have donned or dashed facial hair over the course of their careers.

Scroll down for our verdict on their beardy looks!

David Mitchell - GOOD BEARD

To quote a female pal “With Mitchell, he’s really funny, but you don't want to have to look at him if you don't have to. He’s got weird googly eyes. It’s just cos he is funny that you put up with it. Stick a beard on him, and something magical happens. His face becomes balanced.” Harsh. But it’s as good an explanation as we can offer. Like the Bermuda Triangle, Mitchell’s beard will always have a mysterious, unexplainable draw.

Spring is in the air which means it’s finally time to ditch the chunky knitwear. No matter how attached we’ve got to our cable knit cardies, it’s now time to exhibit a bit of stylish spring flare.

Poll: Brad Pitt in Cannes for Inglorious Basterds photocall

By admin on May 20th, 2009

inglorious_basterds_brad pitt cannes.jpg

There’s no doubt Brad Pitt cut a dash in Cannes yesterday as he posed for the Inglorious Basterds photocall. His pale pink suit, white shirt and grey scarf is an artful colour combination that has already got my mind working.

Having said that there is something about the outfit that seems a little off, the scarf is slightly bulky and the shoes don’t quite fit. A pair of ivory canvas lace-ups or some suede loafers might have fitted in a little better.

What do you think? Take our poll and let us know, don’t forget you can clink on the image to enlarge for a better look.

The Curious Case of Benjamin Button: watch fashion backwards

By Colin Chapman on January 29th, 2009

A big budget Hollywood film that spans the time period 1918 to 2005, only backwards (!) was bound to provide scope (and challenges) when it comes to costume and styling. The Curious Case of Benjamin Button, which opens in cinemas here next Friday, is the latest film by David Fincher (Fight Club, Seven), a director with an artist’s eye for detail, costume being no exception.

With a range of eras to choose from, the Bohemian postwar style is what jumps out. Amongst stand out pieces, leading man Brad Pitt wears a series of jaunty driving caps in homage to Marlon Brando‘s fifties counter cultural icon.

Leonardo DiCaprio takes over from Brad Pitt at Tag Heuer

Leonardo DiCaprio scrubbed up fairly well for the Golden Globes last night, the shiny pinstripe material was bad but it’s nice to see him go for something slightly different. The textural contrast between the suit fabric and velvet waistcoat and lapels, satin tie and patent shoes is very satisfying.

The Hollywood star wasn’t up for any awards himself but he’s succeeding Brad Pitt as the face of Tag Heuer, the LVMH-owned Swiss watch company. DiCaprio will be splashed across billboards and magazines wearing the Carrera Day-Date watch for three years according to the terms of the million-dollar contract.

Ugg boots, love them or hate them? Take our poll!

By admin on November 6th, 2008

What’s your opinion on Ugg boots for men? Everytime I’ve seen a man sporting Uggs I’ve done a double take and then tittered to myself. I’m not a fan of Uggs for women, let alone Uggs for men. Ronnie Wood and Brad Pitt are some of the many male slebs pictured in Uggs and now apparently the US company is aiming their furry boot firmly in the direction of men.
An anonymous fashion editor was reported to have said: “They are a monstrosity. They are like glorified slippers. You may as well shuffle down the street in your pyjamas and a pair of incontinence pants.”

What do you think about men in Uggs? Take our poll after the jump or leave a comment on our Facebook Blog Network page!

Alan Flusser: fuck you clothes

By Jonathan Smith on November 3rd, 2008

Men.style.com has posted this rather good video of Alan Flusser, the tailor and author of many books on style and fashion. Flusser talks about style rather than fashion and how you should base your clothes on what suits you fit, colour and fabric wise- something I wholeheartedly agree with. The temptation is always there to wear something that is very cool, but looks like a sack of crap off the hanger and on you, let’s face it we all do it.

Flusser goes on to say that style transcends fashion and should be timeless and once again I agree that constantly chasing fashion is too expensive and too much hard work; it’s far better to find a good look for yourself and then augment it as fashion moves on. Alan also discusses men’s catwalk fashion and how it alienates many men from following or being interested in menswear, which I think we can all agree is a fairly accurate statement.

Check out the video below to hear from Alan himself on style, Hollywood and Thom Browne.

The word is out and diamond-encrusted rattles our shaking throughout Hollywood. The Pitt-Jolies (or the better-sounding Jolie-Pitts,) are welcoming to the world a baby boy and girl. The boy has been named Knox Leon and the girl Vivienne Marcheline, with sources reporting that Vivienne came in at 5lbs; a fraction lighter than her brother.

Top 20 Cannes fashion moments

By admin on May 23rd, 2008

redford.jpg

Men.Style.com has a retrospective of its top 20 Cannes fashion moments. Most of the fashion moments come from the 60′s and 70′s, the 80′s has two looks, the 90′s has three and the noughties only get one, that being Brad Pitt’s Tom Ford suit.

The fact that there was only one choice from the 00′s must prove that male movie stars have stopped making an effort. It’s like they’re all afraid of being featured on the worst dressed list and have decided to dress in black suit and tie wherever they go. I’m resisting the urge to go on a rant, but you know there’s a problem when sartorial dullard Daniel Craig gets feted for his fashion sense.

“Love Is Blind…” – True Or False?

By Will Reid on April 4th, 2008

vanity.JPGEveryone has had that person they wanted to impress; the girl, the guy, the parent, the boss. And what better medium than fashion? Whether it’s the Louboutin slutty-stiletto (for the girls let me say) or one of Armani’s finest suits, the right look can make or break a first date.

So when Mick Jagger, a living legend with everything but height and anti-wrinkle cream on his side, took his fiancée L’Wren Scott (6′ 4″ to Mick’s 5′ 10″) to the premiere of ‘Shine a Light’ (the Rolling Stones’ new ‘rockumentary’) it was clear that he felt the need to give himself a bit of a sartorial boost. So how true is it that “love isn’t finding a perfect person, it’s seeing an imperfect person perfectly?”

Read on for more celeb examples and rather mean imagery.

Brad for Edwin in Japan

By admin on January 29th, 2008

BradjeansI ain’t being funny right, but what is going on with those jeans Brad? They’re right up round your armpits. To be fair though, I think they’ve Photoshopped out a couple of his vertebrae as I don’t remember Brad being that short in the body.

This is another of Brad’s endorsements in Japan, where he’s been the face of watches, phones, coffee and banks. What is it about celebrity endorsements in Japan? Do they pay more, or is it that actors think they can do cheesy commercials there without damaging their reputation back home?

Suited and Booted at the Critics’ Choice Awards

By admin on January 9th, 2008

Meninsuits

Who needs the Golden Globes? Monday night saw the Critics’ Choice Awards which went ahead despite the writers’ strike. The boys were out in force and in style in their Sunday/ Monday best. What can we learn from the well-dressed?
Clooney as usual looked dapper. The Clooney brand is built on a well-groomed indifference and you’ll never see him in anything other than the classic tux, as befits a man his age. If the tie had been narrower and the waistband lower, he would have looked trendier and he would have looked like he gave a damn. Brad Pitt, takes a few more risks and his three piece tweed suit was more on trend with the slim cut trousers, sharp cut shoulders and er… three pieces. See after the jump for a picture of Hairspray’s Elijah Kelly with Amanda Bynes.
