Mr Mills: The Sunday Times Style Magazine’s New Menswear Columnist

By Will Reid on July 10th, 2008

Thumbnail image for mrmills.jpgThe Sunday Times Style Magazine has, for me, always been a source of great fashion advice but on Sunday, it was the magazine’s new menswear columnist David Mills who I had my eye on.

In his first post (blogger-vocab just fills such a niche in the English language,) Mills talked of great British traditions and this ranged from an observation on cricket attire and classic socks to Huw Edward’s ties.

While entertaining, Mills is too negative and with lines like “Cricket kit used to be…” and “not for the office, please: nobody likes characters,” you are left feeling reprimanded by a headmaster and not advised by a fashion-conscious metrosexual.

WISHLIST: Topman Blue Signet Ring

By Will Reid on July 10th, 2008

bluesignet.jpgNow, I’m not really a jewellery kind of guy and apart from my vintage Omega watch and ragged friendship bracelets I really don’t indulge in the decoration of my exterior.

However, I do quite like this signet ring from Topman and the mixture of edgy ‘blue metal’ and classic signet ring is undoubtedly cool. It would require little other jewellery but would work perfectly with silver pieces such as necklaces and mangles (that’s bangles for those less acquainted with strange fashion-lingo.)

Love The Look: Richard Chai No. 8

By Will Reid on July 3rd, 2008

richardchai.jpgThis new feature highlights the looks we love. Whether it be charity-shop mannequins or fashion week-shots, we will tell you which outfits are rocking our fashion-obsessed world. The first post of this feature looks at Richard Chai’s collection and the one look that I would literally kill for. (Okay, maybe not kill but beat up that glossy male model for sure.)

The whole collection had the feel of street-style and with increased ethnicity in the models used by different labels I think it is clear that the industry is beginning to move away from high-gloss and fake tans. Why go for prissy Versace-boy when you can be an adventurous Dunhill-man?

Check out those high-tops and that two-tone shirt and I doubt you will be able to resist the charm of a young designer only in his second season. I would say ‘out with the old’ but then again I believe it unnecessary to have yet another look at Yohji Yamamoto’s ghost model.

Brandish’s Fashion Word of The Day…Crarem

By Will Reid on June 30th, 2008

crarem.jpgFor those of you wondering where I have disappeared off to recently- the answer is a strange place called Abernethy in Northern Scotland where innocent people are made to compete in equally strange outdoor activities. And not the X-rated kind.

While some have been living it up at Fashion Week, I have been condemned to a lack of ghost models and Matches sales. Therefore, I was delighted to return to Isabelle’s latest fashion accessory- the ‘Medge.’ I have come up with a new fashion word of my own.

I have decided upon the Crarem Trouser’ as my new term. As seen at John Galliano and Etro, this trouser mixes the Harem-style ankle with the new ‘Drop-Crotch’ trend to form the trouser of the season.

Body Shop For Men Face Scrub: the best a man can get?

By admin on June 20th, 2008

Body_Shop_Face-Scrub.jpgWhen it comes to the whole grooming palaver, I still have a resolutely male approach. I don’t mind using facial scrub, or moisturiser – I just want to find one that I like, that works for me, and I’ll stick with it. I’m not too interested in trying every facial scrub on the planet, though I was half-expecting to in order to find one that I liked enough to use every day.

Then I received a gift pack of Body Shop for men stuff, and that was it – their Face Scrub was the one for me, and has been ever since.

Sugarkane asymmetrical glasses will fit your wonky face nicely

By admin on June 20th, 2008

sugarkane_glasses.gif

They say facial beauty is all about symmetry, don’t they? In which case, these asymmetrical specs will be perfect for the remaining, ugly 95% of the population. They’re by Sugarkane, and the quirky frame isn’t all they have to recommend them.

Sales

Liberty sale starts… yesterday

By admin on June 20th, 2008

liberty_sale.gifOK, so we’re a bit slow bringing you this info but *searches frantically for positive angle* that just means you miss the opening day rush, right? Plus it’s Friday. One is in a more shoppy mood on a Friday, I find.

So, yes – the Liberty spring/summer sale is now on, with up to 50% off selected items.

The Liberty website
mentions Marc Jacobs, Marni and Lanvin at reduced yet still reassuringly expensive prices. Rather annoyingly you can’t buy anything in the sale from the site itself, so it looks like a trip to one of their London stores may be in order.

At this point non-Londoners are quite welcome to curse me for bringing them news that is quite worthless to them.

[Thanks to Fancy Dan for the heads-up]

When We Were Casuals – for all your Fila, Reebok and, um, deerstalker needs

By admin on June 19th, 2008

deerstalker.jpgSay what you like about 80s football hooligans, but even while they were battering people’s heads in with metal poles, they had style. Or that’s the popular perception nowadays anyway – I’m sure they couldn’t ALL have been clad in Lacoste. Of course we don’t call this style of dress hooliwear, or whatever – it’s “terrace fashion”, sweetheart.

When We Were Casuals is a site that caters to the gentleman who likes his Fila, Adidas and Barbour gear. Yes, you can find Reebok Classics there, but you can also get some slightly more unusual bits and bobs – howsabout a Christy’s Deerstalker with silk lining? You know it’s just the thing you need to finish off your outfit. Only £40, too.

Brandish Poll: Thom Browne or Tom Ford?

By Will Reid on May 26th, 2008

newyorktimes.jpgImage: Eric Johnson for The New York Times

Thom Browne and Tom Ford are without a doubt two of Brandish’s favourite designers and so imagine my surprise when I got e-mailed this article from the New York Times. It compares the work of both men and includes such literary gems as “the Tom Ford man is an Anglicized gloss on Hollywood style, while Thom Browne’s designs evoke the hipness of eternal adolescence” and Tom Ford’s brilliant definition of masculininty; “to be masculine is to fuse the debonair cut of a Savile Row suit with the swagger of a star from 1970s pornography.”

I made the Brandish team answer this rather sadistic question and you can see their (unwilling) answers after the jump along with a Brandish Poll.

Brandish Poll: High-Waisted Jeans

By Will Reid on May 20th, 2008

topman.jpgWhat a surreal start to the week; trawling Topman for a Monday Morning boost, I was hoping for a few print t-shirts but instead discovered the horror of the new ‘Premium High Waist Slim Jeans.‘ Yes, that’s right; after drop-crotch and MC Hammer (I don’t actually want to touch this) denim, we are being given the chance to try out the latest jean trend. The high waist has failed to get women on side à la skinny jeans simply because they are impossible to wear. In indigo, 100% cotton and selling for £45, I am left wondering if it is really worth the risk. What do you think?

See our poll after the jump!

WISHLIST: Chanel Resort Jumpers

By Will Reid on May 19th, 2008

chanel.jpgResort season is always a bit of a drag for me; overly-frivolous (yes I see the haute-couture irony) and just another season to get my head around, the jump from cashmere coats to cruise is always too much. Karl Lagerfeld’s show for Chanel was proving nauseatingly frilly and I would challenge any British man not to feel melancholic at the sight of a male model in pink tie-dye. That was until Brad Koenig swaggered down the runway wearing that Chanel jumper. You may think that referring to a item as that only three days after it made its debut might be slightly forward but it’s cashmere, a jumper, Chanel and now on Brandish’s WISHLIST. Need I say more?

Lookout for more coverage of male resort looks this week on Brandish.

Celeb Style: Radio 1′s Big Weekend with Irwin Sparks, Dan Gillespie and Usher

By Will Reid on May 12th, 2008

irwinsparks.jpgAt Radio 1′s Big Weekend this weekend, the line-up was that of a rather well-dressed bunch of bands. Madonna excluded. Looking at the photos from this Maidstone extravaganza of fun and frolicking, Irwin Sparks of The Hoosiers stood out as a Brandish-reading sartorialist. He has obviously caught on to our nautical debate and performed in a striped polo and chinos. Also interesting was the appearance (as in attendance not attire) of Usher who wore a Burberry-inspired leather jacket with oversized studs on top of a black vest (see Dan Gillespie of The Feeling.)

Pics below and more celeb style later- although that of a different genre.

Celeb Style- TGI Friday Fashion with Ashton Kutcher, Russell Brand and Gok Wan

By Will Reid on April 28th, 2008

ashton.jpgBeing boring, tired and suffering from a slight addiction to Russell Brand meant that I spent most of Friday night in front of the TV watching a double whammy of my favourite shows. Yes, for those who missed it, the 25th of April saw The Friday Night Project (with Gok Wan) and Jonathan Ross (with Russell Brand and Ashton Kutcher) provide an excuse for home imprisonment across the UK.

But with this line-up of talent came a few great dollops of style brilliance; Russell’s flip-flops, Gok’s “tin-foil” shirt, Alan’s jumper and skinny tie- the list goes on. I however, have decided to present you with the look I see as most wearable.

See after the jump for details of the great get-up.
