So LFW has been and gone and I can concentrate on my Brandish readers once more. Andrea sent me an email a couple of weeks ago asking for clearer sartorial guidance (and praising Will’s outfit picks). Well we’ll never tell you what to wear on Brandish but Andrea has beef with brown: “I know black shouldn’t be worn with brown, but what are the appropriate colours to match it with?”

I vaguely remember Charlie Porter saying teaming brown and black was a fashion faux-pas in his great Guardian Weekend column a few years ago but I disagree. As long as the brown is a rich russety shade it will look great, think of the colours in tortoiseshell and you can’t go wrong.

Love the Look: Waris Alhuwalia at Ben Cho

I have a bit of an obsession with Waris Ahluwalia, the jewellery designer, actor and sometime Ben Cho collaborator.
Café Mode’s Géraldine snapped him looking amazingly turned out for the Ben Cho show in New York recently. It’s a happy coincidence but the dark grey background adds to the tonal mix of his outfit. I love the dun brown suit, and the contrast with the delicate floral pocket square. Research has shown that if you stare at a picture of a tree for long enough it lowers your heart rate, but I think in this instance you could happily substitute tree for Waris Ahluwalia.

Love the Look: Jaakko on Hel Looks

By admin on September 22nd, 2008

jaako hel looks love the look.jpg
It’s a simple look but Jaakko’s tonal outfit posted on Hel Looks a few days ago hits the fashion spot. Breaking up the monotony with a patterned scarf is a wise move and he shows that black and brown can be worn together (more about this soon) without incurring the wrath of the fashion gods. He namechecks Raf Simons, A.P.C and Surface to Air in his outfit rundown and on top of that he is rocking a pretty amazing moustache, bravo!

Now is the best time for a late summer break before autumn really kicks in and Fred Perry’s vintage style bag is just the right size for a quick getaway. Whether you’re off to Hastings or Barcelona the retro good looks will help you cut a smart figure as you dash for the train or plane.
It’s made from brown vinyl and features the Fred Perry logo on the zips and subtly written across the bottom. It’s available from End Clothing and will set you back £65.

Tusting leather tote from Browns

By admin on June 26th, 2008

tusting leather tote browns.jpgCotton bags are becoming so ubiquitous these days I’m on the brink of cutting all mine up into strips and weaving them into some sort of über-tote.

A far better idea is Tusting’s leather bag from Browns, much more of an über tote than any half-assed craft project I’ve ever made. The bitter chocolate colour is versatile and chicer than plain black and simple design stays true to its humble tote roots. It comes with a pretty serious price tag (£245) but the subtle style will last you for years.

Moncler jacket on sale at Start

By admin on May 29th, 2008

moncler jacket start sale london.jpgMoncler has had something of a revival in the last few years, and their jackets have become highly sought after.

Start are having a bit of a sale at the moment and this chocolate brown zip up jacket is reduced to £231. It’s a pretty good price for a jacket which has got great classic good looks. You get lots of pockets, a neat collar and the rich chocolate brown is a great alternative to black or navy.

Office brown deck shoe

By admin on May 28th, 2008

deck shoe brown office.JPGI know we’re pretty hot for deck shoes at the moment but I didn’t mean these monstrosities. Something about the overlong vamp and safe brown really creeps me out. It’s like I’ve been flung into a fashion black hole and spat out somewhere in Clapham or Putney.
If you’re going to give deck shoes a punt (LOL! …Sorry) make sure they are navy or an acid bright and check that the vamp is a bit shorter than Henry Conway’s parliamentary expenses.

Penfield Oxon bag

By admin on May 7th, 2008

penfieldbag.jpg

Whilst leather bags are great and all, there’s just something very un-summery about them. The material is pretty heavy and doesn’t cope with hot weather very well. Canvas, on the other hand, is a lighter material and copes much better in the sun. If you’ve been trying to complete a couple of looks, then look no further this Penfield oxon bag.

Available in college professor-like brown and nautical stripes, these bags have the added bonus of being able to complete two separate looks. If you’ve been slowly building on your nautical look, then this will the piece that will finish it off and all for a pretty reasonable £50.

Suits & Tailoring

Burton linen summer jacket

By admin on April 1st, 2008

burton jacket suit.jpgBurton’s SB2 jacket is a great summer alternative to pinstripe or plain navy but is dark enough to avoid comparisons with the man from Del Monte. It’ll look great with a cobalt blue or coral tie, but equally good teamed with similar neutrals.

The jacket will set you back £69 which is a good price considering it’s 100% linen, the matching trousers are an equally reasonable £30. Suits on the high street never looked so good.

Wearing one colour all the time

By admin on February 26th, 2008

Nycollage

While not as interesting as Lindsay Lohan going
topless
impersonating Marilyn Monroe, there was an intriguing feature in New York magazine about
people who wear all one
colour
. Don’t worry, black wasn’t allowed – otherwise it would have just
been a feature on Goths.

There’s a shoe designer who only wears
blue, a fashion designer in grey, an industrial designer who wears pink and
white at separate times (that’s two colours, the cheat), a fabric designer in
green and Stephin Merritt, who only wears brown.  The article is interesting if only for the
pomposity of the interviewees. The industrial designer (is that just fancy talk
for architect?) stated that wearing white made him feel “angelic and free”.
Presumably, wearing black made him feel like the grim reaper.
