Shopper bags make a nice alternative to the rucksack, and Carhartt canvas bag from Asos (£48) combines utilitarian simplicity with interesting details. A glut of pockets is a terrible thing on trousers but on a bag it’s pretty useful, and the black straps and zip neatly punctuate the colour.
The warm tan will go well with jeans and would look particularly good with some pale green seersucker trousers or shorts for high summer as part of a neat, nouveau preppy outfit.

With Stan Smiths and Rod Lavers firmly in staple territory you can’t blame Adidas for re-releasing the Aditennis Hi (£41-50). Whilst they’re unlikely to become staples, they look great – benefitting from more than a slight resemblance to Raf Simons high tops.
Unlike the Raf Simons shoes, these go up to size 12 and are available from the Adidas online store right now.

Fashion writing is often ridiculed for outlandish phrases, flowery prose and a reliance on clichés. I’d like to add to all of the above by declaring that Superga are the new Springcourt.
Like Springcourt, they make tennis shoes. Like Springcourt, they’ve got some history, starting in the 1930′s. Like Springcourt, they’re based in Europe – Italy to be exact. And like Springcourt, prices start from around £35.

If you like the nautical look but don’t
want to look like you’re in fancy dress, you may be reticent about buying boat
shoes. So why not go halfway and get these boat shoe inspired Paul
Smith trainers?
The perfect blend of canvas trainer and
boat shoe, this is for someone who loves the idea of boat shoes but hates
tassels. They’d also match perfectly with that John Smedley
polo and those Topman shorts.
The multicoloured laces would provide a welcome break from the blue and white
colours and could act as a sly splash of colour in any outfit. These are
available from Coggles.com and cost £70.

Hey colleague Will, you want better looking, more identifiable luggage? What about this big canvas bag from Wood Wood? It’s distinctive, it’s roomy and it’s the last word in hip.
Wood Wood are the Danish label with the zany prints. They do a great job of being wholesome and a bit street at the same time.
They even have a cap in the same pattern should you want to co-ordinate a look. I wouldn’t recommend it though. As Heidi Klum once said in her nails-on-chalkboard voice on Project Runway “I don’t like so much this matchy-matchy”.
Available from Tres Bien.

It’s raining cats and dogs right now, but my reliable colleague Kim has informed me this summer will be scorching. So that gives you a reason to purchase these summery canvas pumps (£45) now, to store in your wardrobe until the sun comes out. They’re a bit baggy but for these Topman babies that just means more comfort than your average lace up shoe. They will top off a relaxed summer look with finesse, especially teamed with some baggy beige trousers.
