Lee Douros is the menswear buyer for my-wardrobe and at the last press day we had a great chat with him about men’s clothing and the online side of things. Lee definitely knows his stuff, so we were thrilled when he agreed to present his top summer picks for us. If you’re still stuck for high-summer chic then this is like the holy grail. Stay tuned for pt2!

This is the point in the year when layering becomes essential. With your peacoat professionally cleaned and (hopefully) being relegated to the wardrobe until autumn, what you need now is some flexible options. One of my perennials is a Sea Island cotton cardigan by John Smedley. Heavier than the usually slinky Sea Island fare, this cardigan will keep the breeze at bay whilst allowing you to breathe comfortably during those sweaty Tube moments. I’ve literally had a black version of this cardie for years, actually re-dyeing it black when it starts to fade. It’s a great shape – short on the waist – with chunky, retro-looking buttons.
The version here is in a very now shade of blue that is cropping up everywhere – most notably at Jil Sander – and looks just perfect for summer. I had to pretty much line up to try on this blue version at Selfridges recently, with all who spotted it cooing over the gorgeous blue shade – fetchingly named BlueEyedBoy.
Teamed with a cotton scarf in an ethnic print, you’re all set to react to our unpredictible weather like an expert.

Paris Menswear Fashion Week began last Thursday and now that is has finished we are able to fully consider all the fashion inspiration from both on and off the runways. From Jefferson Hack and Alber Elbaz to male models and rake-thin boys wearing baggy cardies and vintage Chanel, the shows are an excuse for men to be outrageous and the results are often brilliant.
Look at Kanye West and friends in the image above. The mixture of neon colours and high-fashion logos with laid-black prints and over-the top fabrics gives me more than enough to drool over while I should be working/pretending to work/possibly paying attention to everyday goings on.
Keep reading Brandish everyday for more news from the fashion capitals.

Shawl collars have been this winter’s trend detail in menswear and they’ve been a great way of updating the now slightly pedestrian cardie.
This guy has chosen a wonderfully luminous shade of blue and teamed it with a winter-sky grey jacket which makes it glow even more. What looks like a felt baseball cap adds a modern yet minimalist touch to the look, bravo!

Every once in a while you stumble upon a trusty outfit formula which you can use and reuse to your heart’s content. For me it’s bright tights, vintage skirts, lace ups and a men’s cardie, when I’m stuck for inspiration I can wear umpteen variations of this outfit before I run out of looks.
Back to menswear, it seems that CA has stumbled upon a failsafe outfit formula, his combination of vintage tee, chinos, quirky belt and cardigan can have a dozen different permutations but still look fresh.

For AW08-09, Topman has created a video showcase of their latest collection- Block Heads. Model James Mclean poses in what Topman tells is a trend “inspired by the look of a Dickensian gypsy mixed with influences from the deep south.” We get a glimpse of what we will no doubt be wearing by Christmas and the video really projects what the look is all about- a poetic Grunge with not a slight hint of Luke Worrall.
“Bib front t-shirts are worn under a waistcoat and double breasted cardigans, topped off with a black padded donkey jacket for a military feel. Big accessories for this trend include a selection of trilby hats and scarves worn with tweed trainers or brogues.” Winter’s never looked so good!
Check the video here.

Cardigans are ten a penny on the high street, if you want to keep your look interesting a shawl collar is a subtle detail which will add a little curiosity to your outfit.
Topman‘s red double breasted knit (£40) is a retro style which looks contemporary and smart teamed with office trousers and lace ups. Avoid wearing it with cord trousers, otherwise you’re in danger of straying into Val Doonican territory, and what with us being so close to Christmas that is a scary domain to slip into. Neat indigo denim and slim-cut pressed trousers will get the best out of this cosy cardigan.

Grey cardigans are a bit of an obsession for me, and with reason. The colour looks great with neutrals or brights and it makes the perfect unobtrusive cover-up.
This grey cardigan from Alexander McQueen’s McQ range has got an asymmetric fastening with ruching detail. The detailing is subtle enough for everyday wear buta bit more interesting than your average cardie. Available from Asos for £215 it’s the kind of item that will give you a sense of class and smart with minimum effort.

Does the world need anymore cardigans? No but the world doesn’t need another drunk blond hick, but we have Jessica Simpson and I love her. These cardigans and Jessica Simpson do have a few things in common: we don’t need them, there’s nothing really special about them, we have loads of them but we kinda like them.
Beauty & Youth has gotten together with Lacoste to create these bad boys that could provide a staple piece to any wardrobe. Coming in red, streaky grey marl and navy -which is the nicest in my opinion- with contrasting stripes on the cuffs and button lining.
Hopefully these will not be restricted to the Japanese market and should be available soon from a boutique near you! Jump through for a more detailed look.

With tights and make up all seemingly now accepted male staples, why not corsets? That’s what Folk have sneaked into the mainstream with this drawstring cardigan. Initially I thought the most interesting part of this cardigan was the contrasting squares on the neckline creating a lapel-like effect. A look closer revealed something much more interesting, are corsets in for men?
Seeing as there’s now massage cream that claims to give you a six pack, why wouldn’t a man take this easy route to a V shaped physique? It beats spending £27 on cream that can supposedly do crunches for you whilst lowering your body fat. Take this quick fix at Oki-Ni for £115.

August is traditionally the month when France shuts down, goes on holiday and people start thinking about ‘La Rentrée’. You could call it the French New Year as the whole country gets gripped by ‘Rentrée’ fever, not just schoolchildren but grown adults too.
Around late August with thoughts of the Rentrée ingrained into my mind I always start feeling a little more preppy, and a little more traditional. French Connection’s Airspeed cardigan (£90) diligently ticks all these boxes and instills the excitment of the Back to School feeling even though it’s been a mighty long time since I set foot in a school! The front placket is a nice detail and with the contrasting pockets it’s a smart choice for winter.

Given Material Boy’s Topman Lens collection, you’d assume that every boutique would be snapping at his clothing. It’s an understatement to say that this hasn’t been the case. One of the only places to buy Material Boy is Bespoke Boutique and as luck would have it, they’re having their summer sale. The pick of the bunch is this double breasted jersey jacket.
Made from 90% rayon and 10% lycra, it’s basically a cardigan like material cut into the shape of a coat. Bespoke boutique is a smaller shop and thus sells out a lot quicker than something like Oki-Ni would, so snap this up while you can for £105.

In case you’ve been too lazy to scroll down the page, this is the second post of Matches sale items, this time focusing on Paul Smith.
Cobalt blue cardigan (£78): Cobalt blue is a great spring/summer colour and will make you stand out in a sea of grey cardigans.
Brown brogues (£165): Everyone needs a pair of brogues as they make any outfit much sharper. Round toe shoes are also a lot more grown up than the ‘I wish I played in the Horrors’ pointy toe look.
Brown leather bag (£188): I’m not even sure why I like this so much, but there’s something very charming about this bag.

Roger Federer turned heads on court at Wimbledon sporting a refined retro outfit of gold-trimmed cardigan, polo shirt and tailored shorts. It’s a departure from the on court trend of wearing hi-tech sportswear and harks back to a more genteel era of tennis.
Don’t get me wrong, I’m no sartorial luddite, but Federer’s preppy chic outfit is a cut above your average sweat soaked poly-mesh racer back all-in-onsie. Whether it will make any difference to his game remains to be seen, as he faces Robin Soderling at lunchtime. Vote in our poll and let us know what you think of the Swiss tennis star.
