Dressing well in the festive periods

By shinychris on December 19th, 2012

Sponsored post

When it comes to dressing to impress during the festive season there are a number of different styles to go for, as well as a few that should be avoided at all costs. The most important thing is confidence, if you feel good in what you’re wearing it’ll show and you’ll look great too.

Dress for the occasion

Tailor what you’re wearing to what you’re doing. If it’s for you work Christmas party then jeans and a shirt are always a good option. Stick to smarter cuts and shades with dark jeans being the safest choice. If you want to put your own stamp on it then pick a shirt that shows your personality, or a funky belt. Don’t forget, smart shoes are a must! When picking from the variety of men’s shirts available stick to a colour you feel good in, there’s no point going for the latest trend if it doesn’t suit you!

For Christmas day with the family dress smartly but comfortably. There’s nothing worse than feeling restricted after your Christmas dinner. If you’re just doing some shopping then a cardigan or jacket is a good choice with jeans and canvas trainers. Smart but casual at the same time, you’ll look great and feel it too!

Pick a style and stick to it

Don’t try to mix too many different styles at once, it’s a recipe for disaster. Even the most fashion forward of guys find it difficult to get right. Whether you’re dressing alternative, fashionably or just in a style that suits you, choose neutral colours with one signature shade. For example if you pick a shirt with a red stripe, then don’t mix another colour in. Stick to dark trousers and a tie with a red accent in it where necessary.

Get the right fit

Getting clothes that fit well is absolutely essential, it’s a sure fire way to look and feel good. A too tight shirt or trousers that are too short will ruin even the sharpest style. Get properly measured or stick to a brand that you know fits you well and offers a wide range of options. If you’re into branded gear then make sure they carry your size too.

Overall, getting the best in festive style is just like any time of the year, make sure you feel great, it fits well and suits the occasion and you can’t go far wrong. Confidence always shines through so as long as you feel good and there are no glaring faux pas’ then it’ll show. If you’re not so into fashion then don’t try to get ‘the latest trend’, just nod to it. Otherwise you’ll feel uncomfortable and that shows too. Stick to wearing an on trend colour, or cut of jeans for example for a simple way to get the look.

Storm Watches reveal AW2012 Black, Remex and Dualtec styles

By Gerald Lynch on October 11th, 2012

We love our British brands here at Brandish, and there’s no wristwatch house here in Blighty we love more than Storm. Revealing their 2012 range, we wen’t down to see their AW2012 collection at a preview event in London today. Combining retro mechanical aesthetics alongside items with a more futuristic feel, there’s something for everyone this year. We’ve picked out our favourites from the bunch below, but scroll to the bottom of the post for a gallery taking in the entire range.

Top of the line (and top of the price range) is the Storm Black Aquatec. Pictured above, it’s made using sapphire glass with a rotating ceramic bezel, sitting on the chunkier side of this year’s slim-wrist trend. Water resistant to up to 200M, it’s a toughie too, letting you take a dive without having to lose track of time. You’re looking at £239.99 for the white version, or £259.99 for the black edition.

If you like a traditional clockwork design, the special edition Storm Dualtec will catch your eye. Using a multi-layerd cog and gear face, it too is water resistant, this time up to 50m. The Dualtec comes in two colours, black or brown, and will set you back £159.99 or £179.99 respectively.

Moving from the classic styles to more modern designs, the Storm Remex is probably our favourite from the whole line. Using two numeric dials with a harsh squared-off font to display the time, it’s a lightwieght design for the techy gent. £89.99 will grab you the white version, £99.99 for the Tron-like Slate and Lazer Blue.

Another sci-fi inspired slice of timekeeping design comes courtesy of the Mini Lazer watches. They pull together a silver and enamel strap with a pastel-coloured glass front, and is again water resistant to 50M. With the colourful faces suitable for either sex, each blue, ice or pink Mini Lazer watch costs £119.99.

Dotted around the showcase was also Storm’s jewelery collection. their Quin line takes in leather, plaid and stainless steel necklaces and bracelets, ranging from £39.99 to £54.99.

Check out the complete range from every angle in the gallery below.

Top 5 Ugly Christmas Sweaters

By admin on December 9th, 2010

Amongst my friends and family the Ugly Christmas Sweater Party has become a bit of an institution. My favourite sweater was this great red Christmas tree one, lovingly made by my Grandmother. It featured real working lights attached to its own personal battery pack with various flashing settings…. fortunately I don’t have a picture to share.

In my opinion Christmas just isn’t the same without the ugly sweaters, so I have searched the Internet to bring you 5 of the best ugly Christmas sweaters.

Brandish to the Credit Crunch Rescue: It-Accessory £3.75 from £30!

You know when relatives get Christmas presents that just get under your skin? Well, Hama beads were that present during this holiday season. Whether in my pockets, in my shoes, woven onto my laces, down my skinny jeans (don’t ask!) they were everywhere. The trick with this gift is that you make designs out of the beads and then iron them for a minute to get a solid design. When a young cousin made me a heart it all clicked- these Hama beads were a replica of the It-accessory of the moment as seen on Kanye West and Brandish. And they only cost £3.75 off Amazon and for that price who cares if the recommended customer age is 5?!

Check the pictures of some designs that I managed to snap over the holidays!

Love The Look: Toby Jones/ Truman Capote in ‘Infamous’

By Will Reid on January 5th, 2009

capote.jpgDuring the Christmas season, I was lovingly entrusted with a vintage copy of Truman Capote’s ‘In Cold Blood.’ The book has definitely lived up to its reputation and the two films that have been made about the creation of the book (‘Capote’ starring Philip Seymour Hoffman and ‘Infamous’ with Toby Jones) offer not only a great plot but awesome fashion.

To achieve the look, buy simple jumpers in bright colours and wear them with trenches and blazers in base colours such as khaki, black and brown. Add either jeans or cords (if you want to edge towards a more formal look,) and bold accessories. Over-sized tortoiseshell sunglasses, fedoras, three watches at a time. Why not go all-out?

Learn from the old masters by watching classic films this Christmas

Instead of watching the same old repeats and lame programmes cosy up to an old classic, it’s a great way to avoid the usual Christmas dirge and can be a useful sartorial lesson.
I’ve just finished watching ‘It Happened One Night‘ a wonderful classic featuring Clark Gable and Claudette Colbert. Clark looks his usual dashing self in the film, wearing a casual tweed suit with pockets and a gathered back. The real clothing controversy comes in the scene where he undresses, unable to take both a shirt and undershirt off quickly enough for the scene he abandoned the vest creating a nationwide drop in demand for the garment which is surely a greater lesson learnt than anything you could garner watching My Family repeats, or god forbid, Little Britain USA.

Present Tense: last minute Christmas gifts

By admin on December 18th, 2008

Everyone is guilty of it, (well not everyone, I have a colour-coded Google Docs spreadsheet, natch!) but last-minute Christmas shopping can often leave you with gifts that have an air of desperation about them.
These picks have something for every wallet and they all carry an air of “What this? I bought this in November” insouciance. The Habitat lamp is a tasteful nudge for every Ikea junkie, and the watch will help the wearer get the ‘Sexy Cab Driver’ look which is going to be very important in ’09. A ‘To Do’ tattoo list is useful when compiling all those New Year’s resolutions, and all the more useful because they’re temporary. Resolution, what resolution?!

Will’s Christmas Outfit Picks: Topman ‘Exclamation Mark Print’ Polo

By Will Reid on December 17th, 2008

outfit.jpg

Note to Editor: Can we feature pieces we bought just yesterday?

Now that I’ve cleared that up, I can proceed with this Christmas Outfit Pick. This polo is a great find and the loud print is definitely eye-catching. I found it in Topman yesterday afternoon and it was reduced to £10 from £16. In the image, the polo looks black but it is actually blue and the print looks slightly bigger (as opposed to the foot-print looking print pictured!)

I styled it with blue skinny jeans from Topman, two-tone trainers from Gargyle.com and a cable-knit beanie from Old Navy. If you want us to feature an outfit you have designed around a high-street item (from any country,) send it to isabelle@shinymedia.com.

Brandish Christmas Picks: Comme Des Garçons – Synthetics

By Jonathan Smith on December 16th, 2008

comme-des-garcons-synthetics-series-6.jpg

Tis the season to buy fragrance but this year I’m looking for something a little more leftfield than Lynx shower gel, I want the Comme Des Garçons – Synthetics line. If you hadn’t heard and to be fair I hadn’t, this is series six in a line of fragrances from CDG each with their own theme. This line is split down into 5 very unique fragrances based around the idea of synthetic smells, available from Lucky Scent at $60 for a 75ml bottle and $3 for a tester.

Unlike my other Christmas picks all of which I greatly desire, this is probably the only one I have any intention of requesting for myself because I’m a bit of a snob when it comes to scent and this has really piqued my interest, if it has piqued yours then jump through to read what Lucky Scent has to say about the line.

Yay or Nay: CrapWrap by Firebox.com

By Will Reid on December 15th, 2008

crapwrap_ex8.jpg“Bored of perfectly folded paper and exquisitely tied ribbon? Fancy adding a more ‘personal’ touch this year? Then why not have your Christmas presents CrapWrapped™ at Firebox. This exclusive, uniquely shoddy gift wrapping option involves us wrapping your pressies in a slapdash fashion. “

The Daily Mail reports that Firebox.com is paying “20 of its male forklift truck drivers and warehouse assistants to wrap presents as quickly as possible, using ugly brown duct tape and very little care” for their latest ‘CrapWrap’ service. The service has proved popular with over 500 Firebox customers after only a week of its launch but what do you think?

Is it a bit stereotypical to say that all men are bad at wrapping or do you agree with Geraldine James, buying manager for Christmas gifts at Selfridges, who states that “men are perfectly capable of wrapping presents beautifully. They choose to pretend they can’t so they don’t have to do it.”

Vote ‘Yay or Nay’ to the service after the jump!

Nooka Zon and Zoc

By Jonathan Smith on December 12th, 2008

nooka-zoc-watches-02.jpg

A far cry from the traditional design of the Rolex Submariner, New York based watch brand Nooka has added a couple of new pieces to its Christmas 08 collection. Both pieces sporting interesting design features and high quality construction and materials. These watches are for the man who feels a traditional dial watch is beneath him, though I don’t know how well I’d fair at reading these with a skin full of Christmas Spirit.
