Rock ‘n’ roll can be broken down as follows: 10% fashion, 10% music andĀ 110% HAIR. We know that adds up to 130%. That’s why we’re writing for a fashion site and aren’t quantum physicists. But it also acts to highlight just how important good hair can be in the making of a musical and cultural icon, and cementing the status of bona-fide rock ‘n’ roll stars. Where would Elvis be without his quiff? Or Bowie’s Ziggy Stardust without his…hisĀ unique style? On the dole queue, that’s where. Here, Brandish pick out the 20 most iconic hair styles in rock ‘n’ roll history.

Adam Ant
The dandy prince of pop was like a fairytale character come to life when he stormed the charts with hits like "Prince Charming" and "Stand and Deliver". The Adam had nice black curls to begin with, it was the attention to detail that made his look stand out. Influenced by tales of the pirate Blackbeard weaving lit fuses into his hair to scare off attackers, Adam's hair was a dazzling web of ribbons and charms.

The Mighty Boosh have lost a little of their quirky homespun charm now that they’re living up to their Rock n’ Roll onstage personas, but they can still pack a venue with adoring fans.
Their gig at the O2 arena in London yesterday was a sellout, Noel Fielding had as many costume changes as Katy Perry at the MTV EMAs, including the ones pictured above but the highlight was probably a bizarre old lady outfit teamed with gold boots! I doubt that any of Fielding’s costumes would translate to real life, but as the comedian once said himself “you can never be unhappy in a poncho”, so maybe give it a go during the low points of the Christmas break?

Along with his pretty date Kate Mara, Zac Posen was one of the only slebs who nodded to the Superhero theme at the Met Institute Costume Gala.
What do you think of his bright blue outfit and thick specs, does the superhero look get your heart racing or does it make you want to reach for the Kryptonite?

Not many musicians can claim that their concert costumes are designer-made. Sure the Spice Girls had Cavalli and Madonna can have just about any designer she fancies, but I think Lenny Kravitz has to be one of the few male performers to receive this special luxury treatment.
