It looks like the deck shoe is going to be around for another season, and cashing in on this trend in a big way is Christian Louboutin. The Biarritz Leather Flat maintains the classic loafer style they have become known for, while bringing in some subtle deck shoe elements. The shoes are produced with premium navy blue leather while sporting white contrast details, including tassel accents. Yuketen was founded by Yuki Matsuda, who moved to America in order to work with footwear Artisans. Together they began to produce Moccasin style hunting boots, inspired by 1930′s mountain men. The shoes are made with traditional methods, using American sourced naked leather, to wrap the foot (not just cover it as most shoes this day do). The soles are made from real crepe, which is of course, 100% natural rubber from Brazil and takes about 4 hours to hand sew to the upper.
This season Yuketen has introduced the Kilted Sports Blucher, which fuses both moccasin and deck shoe sensibilities together. These would look absolutely amazing with a pair of rolled up chinos.
Colin featured the YMC snakeskin deck shoes back in February and they’ve proved pretty popular with our readers. Mark Quinn from Baluba is quite the clothes horse, and he started off the trend by sending us a picture of his YMCs, (love to see the rest of the jeans!) Daniel Jenkins, from the Monmouth store Daniel Jenkins sent us an amazing picture featuring him wearing the shoes, and sporting what is possibly the best facial expression ever.
Daniel says: “My girlfriend has look of regret each time I wear them out with her because we always get stopped about them. A busload of Japanese tourists stopped on Mile End road to take photos of me in them.”

Here at Brandish, we always like to help you stand out from the crowd. And in a sea of brown deck shoes and rolled up jeans how does one do that?
Think bright pastels or acid colours instead, and team with seersucker pants and a vintage, punky T-shirt for maximum impact. This look is all about subtly subverting the ‘weekend in the Hamptons’ look that’s so prevalent. Preppy is lovely, but is becoming a bit samey and subversion is always good. As preppies might actually wear pastels too, this is more about attitude.
Don’t be fazed by the pale colours, these shoes will actually look better scuffed up with half the dancefloor dirt in Dalston on top (definitely un-Hamptons).
The predicted standoff between desert boot and deck shoe as Spring/Summer shoe of choice has yet to be seen. To my mind the deck shoe would win anyhow – it actually looks better as it gets battered with age and can be worn with thick socks on chilly days or show off a tanned ankle on others. So, it may be (at least) the second S/S we’ve seen the preppy choice of footwear but there’s no sign of them disappearing on the street.
And now YMC have created a sublime option – the snakeskin effect deck shoe. YMC have always had the touch with shoes and remain unaffected by trends, following a confident path that alway spells cool. Available from Liberty’s men’s shoe department or from OkiNi online. Incidentally, they’re snake-effect leather not real snakeskin – just in case you have reptile sympathies, or are just plain squeamish.
Now bear with me .. I know the observation seems a little random. But on a recent journey from Shoreditch to Soho it seemed that every hipster worth his money was wearing some form of brown shoe. There’s a lot of brogues out there, also a lot of battered deck shoes still hanging on (just) from summer. What unites them all (aside from battery) is the fact that they seem to be breaking the rule of black and brown not being seen together. Black trews/brown shoes used to be a fashion faux pas. But such rules are there to be broken. Alongside the rolled-up black jeans there’s also a lot of hip-hugging cords on show, navy or wine being a popular choice. Add a contrast, statement sock (mustard, anyone?) and there’s a veritable riot going on down there.
Perhaps the first in a line of “there”s a recession let’s rip our jeans”-type trends, the battered shoe, demonstrably a pre-2009 purchase, is out there to be seen. As for people wearing grubby white plimsolls in the midst of cold, WET January that’s just wrong – on a par with freezing to death in stilettos and skimpy top to prove how hard you are. As videos go this one is kinda dull. There are no explosions, guns or tits nor is there a girl satisfying a horse/dog/herself (delete as applicable) so it’s doubtful that this is the kind of fodder we would usually ogle on our TVs or behind our bedroom’s locked door. However there are shoes, lots of lovely shoes. The video is from Band of Outsiders and showcases their collabo with Sperry bringing some awesome deck shoes for the coming season.

My summer romance with deck shoes was coming to an end but then Kurt Geiger’s ‘Lost Sounds’ shoes (£55) appeared on the scene and made me reconsider my winter strategy. First of all they’re three tone which is always a surefire bet for a good shoe, and the colours themselves are a tonal duo of greys with a shot of orange guaranteed to beat the winter blues.
Worn with a pair of socks in a clashing bright or a stripy grey this is a summer romance that might make it till next spring.
Prince Michael of Kent was recently voted 34 in GQ’s best dressed list, which was topped by Bond star Daniel Craig. Pictured yesterday at the Henley Regatta the Prince looks pretty dapper in a blazer and team cap.

I’ve only recently got over my deck shoe inverse snobbery, which makes it even harder to figure out whether these metallic Lanvin deck shoes are the most awesome shoe ever, or just really lame. They’re just so over the top I think I’m in love.
Obviously grey suede and peach metallic leather were never going to be suitable for actually wearing on a boat, so if you feel like splashing £465 out on a pair forego any cargo pants, wraparound shades or polar fleeces. Team them instead with slim fit white jeans (yes, seriously) and a grey v-neck for a neutral take on the ’80s Club Tropicana look.
You can always spot a Frenchman from miles away. They’re usually wearing dreaded deck shoes in brown, navy trousers and v-neck and a pink gingham shirt. Me and my fellow half-French friends would always spot them walking around saying ‘bof’ and run away saying "Agh! Frenchies!". These days I’m ever so slightly more tolerant and applaud French males for their sartorial elegance; but not for the deck shoes, they must die. For the Frenchie look team a stripy Ralph Lauren shirt, £80 from Sarah Coggles, and a lambswool v-neck, £29.50 from Marks & Spencer.
