The Brandish Sphere of Influence- Mr Mills Style Column?

Will Reid Clothing, Entertainment, News Leave a Comment

mrmills2.jpg

Just two weeks ago, Brandish reviewed the first edition of the Sunday Times Style Magazine’s ‘Mr Mills’ menswear and style column. I decided that Mills needed to brighten up a bit and make the column a little more cheery and summer-inclined if he was to hold the attention of readers. Well, call me egotistical, but is it pure coincidence that the latest edition of the column featured pieces on swim trunks, sunglasses, lime green hair oil and bright-coloured ties?

I was recently watching Bruce almighty and during the infamous Monkey-Butt scene (I try to be a serious journalist,) I was struck with the cold slap of sartorial envy.

The new Batman film, Dark Knight, has been causing quite a stir throughout the film industry. Heath Ledger’s stellar acting, the new and improved Batmobile, the expectations thrust upon Christian Bale- all these things are no doubt exciting but how did the creative edge of this film translate onto the red carpet?

Read on for full details of this thriller evening.

Vogue Germany- August 2008: Daniel Craig

It was revealed yesterday afternoon that the latest issue of Vogue Germany, has a multiple cover. One goes to Toni Garrn and the other to Brandish fave Daniel Craig.

Daniel is shot by Rankin in an okay editorial and the cover headline is “Mr. Style & Mrs. Chic…” I like the colour palette of hot red with the white-light background and cool colours of Craig’s outfit but the pout is a bit off and the turn of this good-looker’s head makes it look as if he has an odd and inflamed left-ear.

First Day Fetish… Luke Worrall’s Heels

The Farlex Free Dictionary decrees that Monday is “the second day of the week, and the first day of the working week.” That latter part means that for most of us, it is a ridiculously depressing day of hellish tasks and grumpy peers.

So why not add a dash of excitement with these pictures from the August 2008 issue of Dazed & Confused. From the title editorial, itself entitled ‘Dark Magic,’ I present to you Luke Worrall in high heels and other pieces of woman’s clothing.

YSL Men S/S 09: A Different Kind of Preview…

For this season, the genius designer Stefano Pilati has decided to preview the label’s menswear collection in the form of an incredibly arty mini-film called ‘Figures Entwining.’ With a couple of androgynous male and female models, Pilati shows a main male (fully clothed in YSL goodness) being showered by this mass of bodies.

This new feature highlights the looks we love. Whether it be charity-shop mannequins or fashion week-shots, we will tell you which outfits are rocking our fashion-obsessed worlds. The first of post of this feature looks at Richard Chai’s collection and the one look that I would literally kill for. (Okay, maybe not kill but beat up that glossy male model for sure.)

I’m Still Not Convinced- The Short Suit

Will Reid News, Suits & Tailoring, Trends Leave a Comment

A while ago, we remarked on how a Telegraph feature on the short suit had used rather unusual models to create an unflattering portrayal of the look.

However, this picture (taken at the launch of Gucci by Gucci Pour Homme in Milan,) shows that even the fashionistos of the industry can’t get it right. While also not the most model-ly of men, Bruce Pask of the New York Times would be one of those I thought could pull of this challenging look.

For those of you who haven’t watched Amy Winehouse’s performance at Nelson Mandela’s 90th Birthday, she does this thing where she pulls on her skirt while she sings. She looks to me a victim of ‘Summer Spirit.’

You know what I mean- when all you want to wear are your swimshorts and the thought of a buttoned up shirt and trousers makes you itch. Don’t worry Amy, I have found the answer to this shared problem and it comes in the form of Dries Van Noten’s transparent shirt.

Brandish Poll- ‘Luke + Kelly 4 Ever?’

Will Reid Heroes and Celebrities, News, Polls Leave a Comment

I’m officially torn- Luke Worrall, the almost-supermodel and It-boy of the London Fashion scene has been spotted (now that’s an understatement) with Kelly Osbourne. My question is whether she is a suitable match for a rising fashion star. I’m personally not a fan but then I’m a menswear fashion writer who is rather over-protective when it comes to fashion stars. That’s right Tom Cruise- don’t even try to get near our Aggy!

WISHLIST: Prada Lifestyle Sets

While most men opt for the safe bet of ties, socks and other traditional Father’s Day gifts, I have always wanted to get something better. I spend weeks and months searching for something perfect in its masculine luxury, but when your dad works for Tesco’s your options are sadly limited. As a result, I often end up presentless and apologetic by the Third Sunday of June (like today, for instance.)

I was a fan of Isabelle’s ‘Caviar’ ties but only this afternoon (how horrendously cruel is that?) found these Prada Lifestlye sets.

Brandish Special: Men of Mumbai

In these let few days I have seen a harsh and gripping poverty but also a vibrancy and pride that made for some great sights. This feature is dedicated to the attitude of those dealing with the harsh reality of life. Prepare for home-made man bags, children challenging fashion rules and prints that wouldn’t look out of place on a Burberry runway. There is no insensitivity intended here but an appreciation for the contagious positivity so inspirationally radiated by these young Men of Mumbai.

Keep reading for great street-style shots and a rather phenomenal blend of fabrics, styles and looks.

Celeb Style: BoyZone’s Bare-Chest Comeback

Will Reid Entertainment, Heroes and Celebrities, News Leave a Comment

celebstyleboyzone.jpg

There are times I love gorging over celebrity looks; Cannes glamour, Oscar glory, MTV glitz. Then there are times when rather rubbish boybands return with a receding hairline and a group of barely-dressed female dancers, thinking they can win us all over with a rendition of an old classic and a bit of David Brent-dancing. Of course to pretend that BoyZone did not contribute to the Reid family soundrack would be a lie as Ronan’s “When You Say Nothing At All” has not only made my Mum cry but got my brother 16,414 Youtube hits. (I have, myself, never been influenced by that Irish twang and chorus of fiddles and flutes.)
