Check has undeniable appeal but right now it’s a little overexposed so stick to something with a little more longevity. Make like James Franco and go for gingham, it’s a little more dressed up than indie plaid and has classic appeal. Trust Franco, he appeared on the cover of the last issue of Man About Town; although I’m not so sure I’d follow his footwear having seen long shoes in this picture.

As if I needed a reminder about missing The Specials secret gig at Bestival by being asleep in a tent, Modculture’s Dave has given me the heads up on a great competition he is running from today.
Terry Hall himself is signing (the tags) of a Fred Perry knit to mark the release of a special 500-limited edition version of their v-neck jumpers. They are being made to the specification of the jumper Terry wore on the first issue of the Face, with a deeper ‘V’, oversized laurel and they will be available in maroon and black.

Now is the best time for a late summer break before autumn really kicks in and Fred Perry’s vintage style bag is just the right size for a quick getaway. Whether you’re off to Hastings or Barcelona the retro good looks will help you cut a smart figure as you dash for the train or plane.
It’s made from brown vinyl and features the Fred Perry logo on the zips and subtly written across the bottom. It’s available from End Clothing and will set you back £65.

The link between fashion and sport is undeniable, even the fashion heavyweights such as Ralph Lauren and Fred Perry have history in sporting activities of various types. Assuming you’re not head to toe in bespoke suit and a pair of wingtips it’s an almost certainty that you’re wearing some kind of sportswear, unless of course you’re reading this naked. In which case kudos. The link is even more noticeable in the street fashion scene with uber-weight sport’s companies like Adidas and Nike pretty much owning the game with vintage re-releases and limited editions.
The Fashion Vs. Sport exhibition at the V&A started this week and is running through to the 4th of January. The exhibition explores in depth the link between sport and fashion and looks to be a bloody fun and educational afternoon out. For more info get over to the V&A’s website here.
To celebrate the exhibition I have knocked together my top 5 sport fashion items, check them out after the jump!

As the old saying goes, ‘another day, another Fred Perry collaboration’. This time with Tomoki Sukezane. It does make a mockery of the whole ‘Fred Perry is for fans of style not fashion’ stance though, as the company are clearly using collaborations as a means to follow trends.
Cynical nit picking aside, this collaboration is right on trend for autumn with the chunky knits and preppy stylings. The knits are made from a cotton and cashmere blend and are available in the four colours above. As it is a Japan based collaboration, I’m not sure when they’ll be available to Europe or America but when news appears, we’ll let you know.

Paul Weller and Fred Perry are so deeply linked that you wonder why he hasn’t just gave up the music stuff and just started working for them full time. It’s not like anyone wants to hear a new album from him. This collection of polo shirts, due for release in June, are pretty much what we’ve come to expect from their collaborations, in a good way.
With these shirts, it’s the details that count. The detail on the neck manages to make it stand out whilst still looking like a polo shirt. If you’re absolutely dying to get your hands on these, you can register at the Fred Perry website to get them a full 72 hours before everyone else does.

Hot on the heels of the Comme Des Garçons collaboration, Fred Perry are now pairing up with Jil Sander head honcho and King of sub-cultural style, Raf Simons. This adds another line to Simons’s bulging portfolio – along with Jil Simons he designs his own name label and Raf for Raf Simons and a line of backpacks for Eastpack.
Fred Perry were looking to broaden their product range from “a few star polo shirts” which CDG “weren’t on board for” according to the Fred Perry spokesman. Oo-er, that sounds a bit snarky.
The range will be available this Autumn. It will include polos, sweaters and trousers all in black with different coloured logos. Very understated.
