While I quite liked a few of the items in the Bradley Wiggins Fred Perry range (namely the shoes and the zippy white cycling top) I must admit I wasn’t exactly blown away by them.
And three new items which have been put on the site of the retailer The End (spotted first here) aren’t going to change my mind either.
You can pop here to see the Fred Perry Bradley Wiggins Zip Cycling Shirt and the Fred Perry Bradley Wiggins Half Zip Knit, but the pick of the trio is then the Fred Perry Bradley Wiggins Harrington which is pictured above.
It is basically a Harrington designed for cyclists which in theory sounds like a great idea. It is in a striking Navy Blue (they call it Dark carbon) – which maybe could have been a little more fluorescent – and features two button pockets and a zip. There’s also aback pocket which these days are pretty de rigeiur for any cycling jacket.
It is made from 100% cotton and retails for £150.

Slightly cheaper, but still at the top-end of the Harrington range, this is made from 100% cotton, has buttoned biker style collar & elasticated cuffs. It has hip, back & inner buttoned pockets and is finished with vintage Pretty Green paisley lining & piping.

I checked an hour or so ago and it appears that the temperature, in the south east at least, is heading for double figures tomorrow. Spring might not be here, but it is certainly on its way. And that means it is time to ditch that heavy wool coat that kept you warm all winter for something a little flexible and lightweight.
And when it comes to stylish casual jackets it doesn’t get much getter than the Harrington. Always associated with the mod movement – they became popular in the late 60s on skin and suede heads and again in the late 70s and early 80s when they were championed by Jam fans – they are the staple of heritage brands and everyone from Ben Sherman through to Merc has a range.
Last year Damon Albarn seemed to spend most of the spring wearing his navy Fred Perry and there are plenty of other high profile Harrington wearers like Terry Hall and Daniel Craig.
For a classic you need look no further than Baracuta who were pioneers of the jacket back in the 1930s. If you want something with a twist check out the quilted version or the dog tooth one. Purists please note we have included a jacket or two that could be seen as a bomber jacket/Harrington hybrid. But then we make the rules.

Still agonising over whether you need a bag to lug all your gear around? Well I’d get over it. How else are you going to transport your iPad, Kindle, various chargers – and maybe even the odd book or mag if you are old school?
One option that more and more blokes seem to be adopting are medium sized Barrel bags. These are the smaller versions of the the kit bags that you used to put your footy stuff in back in your fourth form days.
There’s now a good range that are suitably stylish, classically retro and big enough to accommodate a load of gadgets.

Heritage brand Fred Perry has had a really good year courtesy of some high profile tie-ups.
If you fancy one of their polo shirts, or anything else for that matter, now is a very good time as the company has just started its winter sale.
Pictured is the £45 (down from £55) Slim Fit Twin Tipped Fred Perry Shirt, which has the company’s trademark twin tipping which runs across a slightly smaller collar and each cuff. It is also a slimmer fit and available in a variety of colours.
There are also stripey polo shirts, long sleeve polo shirts, check shirts T shirts and this rather striking £94.95 Fairisle lambswool jumper. Most are discounted by around 10-25%.

There are many things in life that I can’t quite make my mind up about. For example The Horrors are they an innovative exciting band or just rehashing old Kraut Rock riffs with the odd 80s power pop interlude. And Lime Pickle. Is it the culinary equivalent of bungee jumping or the only real accompaniment for a poppadom. I don’t really know. I change my mind on these issues on almost daily basis.
As I do with Chambray shirts. They really are everywhere at the moment and according to some fashion writers you really don’t have a wardrobe unless you are out and about with pastel one with all the buttons done up and the sleeves rolled as high as they can go.
Yet do you really need one? I can’t help but thinking that the case against them is pretty overwhelming, as whisper it, they are a tad boring.
For most blokes there precious few opportunities to express our inner dandy, especially without looking like a bit of a pratt. One of the most obvious ways is a bit of a patterns on your shirt but it Gingham, Stripey or even, on a very good day paisley. It makes you out as individual and someone who at least put a bit of thought in what they are wearing. This is especially true when you are wearing casual clothes.

As for Chambray shirts, well they mainly come in plain very dull looking pastel colours, They don’t say much about you at all. In fact if they say anything it is that you are trying just a little too hard. Not a lot of individuality going on there. They are the current equivalent of those big baggy brightly coloured shirts that everyone was wearing untucked in the 90s.
Then again I can’t deny that on some people they do actually look rather good. Every year there’s a hipster trend that hits the mainstream (toffee coloured trousers are this season’s other contenders). It is a shame that this year it is such a dull one.
Anyhow here’s a selection of Chambray shirts including a few that sport a bit of a twist.

Want to go rambling but don’t want to look a complete nerd? Fred Perry may just have the answer with its latest outdoor collection. The two men’s Authentic jackets are the Lowland Parka and Pursuit Jacket – and they look pretty good.
Inspired by the hardwearing utility styles worn by British ramblers, the Lowland Parka is a 250g combed cotton canvas jacket with a brushed tartan lining to add comfort and warmth and a 3 piece peaked topped hiking hood. Fastening with branded corozo buttons and hiking laces, this durable rambling jacket has two large bellowed pockets with antique gold eyelets.
Other features include a 3 piece square raglan sleeve which has an adjustable cuff with storm gusset insert, more antique gold eyelets this time for underarm ventilation and an external waist drawstring for improved ease when adjusting. Available in Olympian blue, the jacket is completed with a leather patch featuring Fred Perry’s signature Laurel Wreath embroidery.
The 210gm cotton twill Pursuit Jacket also looks towards traditional rambling attire. The designers have used a very gentle peached finish to emphasise the natural feel of the jacket which is also lined with a brushed tartan lining, to keep you warm in the Autumn and Winter seasons, and a low tech performance treatment to ensure it is shower proof.
This rich cotton Pursuit Jacket has also been given a utility edge with multiple pockets including two map pockets on the chest which close with antique brass snap fastenings. Hiking laces which are usually found on trekking boots have been used as draw cords and combined with brown leather stoppers to create adjustable drawstrings which sit at the hood and inside hem, giving added shape and definition. The jacket available in Port and Dark Carbon has also been finished with Laurel Wreath embroidery at the chest.

Sportswear can be tough to get right; football shirts are out of the question, they immediately deny you access to all but the diviest of drinking holes. Tennis gear is kinda cack other than the immortal Fred Perry, plus it aligns you with the Wimbledon crowd “Come on Tim..!” No thanks. You can’t wear a basket ball vest if you’re white and you can’t wear most golf clobber if you’re black or white or under 50.
Rugby shirts you can work with. Underestimated in a fashion sense despite having a heritage along the same lines as the currently hot as shit polo shirts, with long sleeves and a sturdy collar a nice rugby could easily and stylishly replace a sweater on these summer evenings. Quality is not an issue, these shirts being made to take a knock or two and you can also be sure that you’re wearing something with a little more history than your H&M hoody. With many a brand putting their personal touch to the classic English rugby shirt and plenty of local, national and international teams producing classic rugbys you are spoilt for choice when it comes to picking a colour to go with your denims and boots.
The polo is dead, long live the rugby! Check out a few nice examples from the gamut of rugby colourways at Crew Clothing and Nautica but there are a million other places you can pick up an interesting, new and off the wall rugger!

Designer Spotlight

Raf Simons is back once again with mod father Fred Perry to bring their SS09 collab. Moving away from the monotone of previous seasons these power houses of style are moving into the exciting unknown with a vibrant colour palette taking it’s inspiration from West African culture.
The range consists of 25 pieces some of which are reworkings of Fred Perry classics such as the polo shirt augmented with new weaves and knits. New comers to the line include slipon, tassle loafers in both navy blue and burnt red and a slim fit harrington jacket in regal blue.

For a third season Danish designer Peter Jensen and British label Fred Perry are working together on an old staple; the Harrington jacket. Coming in red, black and a very current gingham Jensen is up to standard in his attention to detail with the classic jacket receiving a super-sizing to the pockets and laurel.
The jackets will be available from next year as part of Fred Perry’s SS09 range with a rough launch date of February 09 being pencilled in.

Check has undeniable appeal but right now it’s a little overexposed so stick to something with a little more longevity. Make like James Franco and go for gingham, it’s a little more dressed up than indie plaid and has classic appeal. Trust Franco, he appeared on the cover of the last issue of Man About Town; although I’m not so sure I’d follow his footwear having seen long shoes in this picture.

As if I needed a reminder about missing The Specials secret gig at Bestival by being asleep in a tent, Modculture’s Dave has given me the heads up on a great competition he is running from today.
Terry Hall himself is signing (the tags) of a Fred Perry knit to mark the release of a special 500-limited edition version of their v-neck jumpers. They are being made to the specification of the jumper Terry wore on the first issue of the Face, with a deeper ‘V’, oversized laurel and they will be available in maroon and black.
