gert jonkers fantastic man interview brandish.jpg

Here is part two of our interview with Fantastic Man Co-Editor In Chief Gert Jonkers, along with Jop van Bennekom they produce one of our favourite fashion mags, click here to read part one.

How do you think being from the Netherlands and basing the magazine in Amsterdam has influenced the magazine?
To develop and maintain our own tone of voice it surely helped to not be around all the other magazine makers. And just because we’re not in London, Paris or New York, I think we have quite an interesting perspective on the fashion world. We’re intrigued by fashion, yet we’re not completely drowning in it.

Brandish speaks to Fantastic Man’s Gert Jonkers

By admin on March 25th, 2009

fantastic man gert jonkers interview.jpg
Current issue, pictured above, out now.

We were lucky enough to speak to Gert Jonkers recently, who, along with Jop van Bennekom head up the team at Fantastic Man. It’s no secret that we’re big FM fans at Brandish, and one look at the magazine’s clever art direction, witty articles and embedded fashion editorials will show you why. Nowhere else can you read about Beryl Woodsware crockery and Tom Ford in the same magazine so it was a real privilege to speak to Jonkers, stay tuned for part two of this interview tomorrow.

Butt, your first magazine, took a very European view of sex, happily mixing explicit and intellectual content. You’ve kind of done the same thing with Fantastic Man, is that just yours and van Bennekom’s general approach to life?

Yes I guess so. We love reality, and the reality of life is that it’s sometimes quite mundane, sometimes quite thoughtful, sometimes quite exciting, sometimes quite complex, and sometimes quite plain. Why would a magazine have a completely different take on life?

Fantastic Man issue 8 with Charlie Porter, Will Oldham and Fergus Henderson

By admin on September 29th, 2008

fantastic man 8 .jpgSunday night was a lot more exciting than I’d like it to be when I got my mitts on the new issue of Fantastic Man, it was downing a triple shot of fashion caffeine. Perfect-bound, nearly double the normal amount of pages and now with Charlie Porter as their Deputy Editor I can’t think of a single reason why you wouldn’t want this in your life.

Featuring interviews with Will Oldham and Tyler Brûlé the magazine is also packed with new features and fashion shoots which goes someway to explain why I didn’t get to sleep until the wee hours last night. It has also introduced curator Okwui Enwezor to me, his off-duty uniform of vintage denim workshirt and silk scarf has been burnt onto my brain. See after the jump for more images.

This month’s 10 essentials featuring Fantastic Man, Purple Magazine and GQ Style

By admin on June 25th, 2008

essentialtrio.jpg
There’s an embarrassment of riches on the 10 essentials front as the staff of Fantastic Man, Purple Fashion and GQ Style all chip in with their lists. Founders of Fantastic Man Gert Jonkers and Jop Van Bennekom have the kind of choices you’d expect them to have, with their own pair of jeans, embroidered chinos and Hardy Amies’ ‘ABC of Men’s fashion’ all making the list.

Purple cofounder Oliver Zahm’s list is very classic Hollywood, as he lists a YSL leather jacket, Ray Bans and a Honda 750 motorbike. GQ Style’s creative director David Bradshaw has a simpler list than both the aforementioned, listing a crossroads bike, his back garden and his wedding ring. He also mentions some Tom Ford sunglasses, reminding you that he does work at GQ style.

Acne collaborate with Fantastic Man for their ‘Gentleman’s Jeans’

By admin on April 10th, 2008

The Dutch duo behind the beloved Fantastic Man magazine have teamed up with Acne to produce the ‘Gentleman’s Jeans’, a pair of slightly tapered slim-ish fitting dark denim jeans. The Fantastic Man editors Gert Jonkers & Jop van Bennekom describe it thus:
“It’s reminiscent of a style that we’d see on our fathers and uncles — the dreaded pleated denim chino — but then updated and made wonderful for today and for ourselves.”

Taking the origins of jeans as workwear as a starting point Acne have adapted the classic trousers for the modern man, and they suit formal wear as much as a casual look. They are available from Acne’s online store for £170.
