Oliver Peoples consistently impress me with their eyewear collections, and this latest is no different.
The company was founded in 1986 when opticians Larry and Dennis Leight opened an optical boutique on Sunset Boulevard, California. Earlier that year, they purchased an estate collection of vintage American-made eyewear. The assortment included thousands of beautifully filigreed rimless and metal frames, including clip-on metal sunglasses produced by iconic American companies, such as by Bausch & Lomb and American Optical. All the frames were unworn, in mint condition and in their original packaging.

The brothers purchased the entire lot, which included a receipt signed with the name “Oliver Peoples,” who they reasoned was the original owner or distributor. When they decided to sell the estate collection in their retail store, they decided to use this name in his honor.
Now years later, encouraged by loyal friends, family and customers Oliver Peoples founder Larry Leigh, has dug through his personal archive of original Oliver Peoples designs and decided to revive several iconic, brand-defining styles.

He believes, and I’m inclined to agree, that these classic styles is just as strong today as it was twenty years ago. Since very few originals still exist, and because it is essential that the same attention to detail, craftsmanship and the integrity of the original styles be retained, the brand reached out to the same Japanese factory to reproduce these designs in a limited run. The frames will be made available to select customers.

Calvin Harris, the Dumfries-born DJ who is often tipped with providing the backing track to the vintage wave of last summer, is currently topping the charts with his ‘I’m Not Alone’ and while watching his latest video I was suddenly aware of the BOT male’s striking similarity to another No. 1 popstar…
See after the jump for the big reveal!

Kris Van Assche, creative head of Dior Homme, and luxury sunglasses label Oliver Peoples have already put out successful collections of their collaborative designs but this week has seen the launch of the Spring/Summer 2009 collection.
The sunglasses for this season are still over-sized but thinner and sleeker than the thick-rimmed versions of previous seasons. Available in black, white and a divine tortoiseshell, these sunglasses (yet to be given a pricetag) are sure to feature on the WISHLIST of the entire Brandish team.

How to do class in the freezing cold… Take one well tailored grey coat, a battered but sturdy pair of boots, slim wool trousers and top it off with a pair of tinted specs. When temperatures plummet there’s nothing like a pair of thick wool trousers to keep you warm and if you really feel the cold slip on a pair of long johns.
It might take you a while to get that impressive beard but if you’ve got the basics sorted hopefully the rest will follow.

TV on the Radio sort of passed me by, I always thought they were one of those generic indie ‘four boys and a guitar’ type bands but listening to tracks from their latest album ‘Dear Science’ I realised the error of my ways.
Just in time too, as I spotted Kyp Malone recording for Jools Holland’s show. That bushy but neat beard, those round tortoiseshell glasses, that guitar strap and the gold print tee… Finally! A man who knows how to wear a waistcoat, a great example to us all. Shame Boyzone aren’t TV on the Radio fans.

Marcello Mastroianni, the celebrated actor and style icon has a new posthumous string to his bow being the inspiration for Robert Geller’s line of eye glasses from his A/W 08 collection.
Being cool is no easy feat so give yourself a leg up the ladder of style with eye wear usually reserved only for dead Italian actors, but be quick because by the looks of things they are almost entirely pre-ordered up. Available for pre-order over at Blackbird.

While the term style icon is overused, I would like to nominate Bobby Womack up for the entirely made up award of coolest glasses wearer. His overall style wasn’t amazing, but he wore square glasses better than anyone I’ve seen (not that I’ve seen many people wearing square glasses).
After reading his autobiography, I felt compelled to anoint him with this title. Aside from wearing glasses well, Womack’s worked with, toured with or played for everyone from Jimi Hendrix to Sam Cooke to Janis Joplin. In fact he was the second to last person to see Joplin before she died (the last was her dealer, according to Womack). He was also the inspiration behind ‘Mercedes Benz’ and convinced Sam Cooke to not release ‘A change is gonna come’ (it was only released after Cooke died).
With clear glasses getting more popular by the day, why not step outside the box and follow in the footsteps of Mr Womack?

I’m currently down in London, lapping up the (dubious) sunshine and attempting to dress in a way befitting of the cramped, and quite frankly torturous, morning tube journey. Turns out they’re not too pleased about being next to someone wearing a blazer with Margiela-esque shoulderpads. Basically, the heat is ridiculous and so yesterday I wondered into Convent Garden and bought some vintage sunglasses at Rokit.

They say facial beauty is all about symmetry, don’t they? In which case, these asymmetrical specs will be perfect for the remaining, ugly 95% of the population. They’re by Sugarkane, and the quirky frame isn’t all they have to recommend them.

Like colourful glasses but hate Wayfarers? Then check out these limited edition Moscot Nebb glasses. The result of a collaboration with designer Chris Benz, these are what wayfarers would look like if they had some more class.
Like all true limited editions, there are only 200 of each pair available in both sunglass and prescription style. The Moscot site even lets you choose the colour of your lenses so if you’ve always wanted a pair of purple sunglasses with yellow lenses, now’s your chance.

If you’ve been suitably superhero inspired, you’ll know that the starting point is the specs. While metallic blues look great on their own, geeky spectacles give it an extra boost. These Salt Alec glasses transform any Joe Schmoe into Clark Kent, who dressed much better than Superman.
While these are great for all those who do need glasses, if you don’t you might feel like a fraud. Just how a lot of people feel like idiots wearing sunglasses – preferring to squint when they walk down the street – you’d surely feel a bit silly pretending to need glasses. If you can get past that then these are retailing from £142.
