Issue 8 of GQ Style magazine is now on the stands. And from the Warhol-esque cover onwards it’s an All-American edition. Inside, Terry Richardson photographs (himself naturally) but also shiny, happy President Obama. We get to read about why New York is so buzzing right now when it comes to menswear – a view I’d really endorse.
There are also some serious analyses of American fashion classics from the button-down to the white T-shirt to the chino pant. To illustrate the chino piece, they use a cracking image of James Dean in East of Eden – an iconic image that seems obvious until you look at the details and see how prescient they were – the loose chino pant, pale sweater and white plimsolls look so very contemporary. Not to mention the hair – quite timely with height and volume becoming desirable again. So if you’re working on your quiff or want to swot up on the origins of your wardrobe basics go straight to the source via GQ Style’s America Now issue.

There’s an embarrassment of riches on the 10 essentials front as the staff of Fantastic Man, Purple Fashion and GQ Style all chip in with their lists. Founders of Fantastic Man Gert Jonkers and Jop Van Bennekom have the kind of choices you’d expect them to have, with their own pair of jeans, embroidered chinos and Hardy Amies’ ‘ABC of Men’s fashion’ all making the list.
Purple cofounder Oliver Zahm’s list is very classic Hollywood, as he lists a YSL leather jacket, Ray Bans and a Honda 750 motorbike. GQ Style’s creative director David Bradshaw has a simpler list than both the aforementioned, listing a crossroads bike, his back garden and his wedding ring. He also mentions some Tom Ford sunglasses, reminding you that he does work at GQ style.

In the latest issue of GQ Style Charlie Porter is waxing lyrical about the ’21st Century Flat Top’ and I have to say I agree. It fits in with a new style preppiness and clean minimalism which is the antithesis of Hedi Slimane’s slimfit rockstar look.

So I realise that this is the second time we ( fine, I) have looked at Hayden Christensen on a magazine cover over a relatively short time period but surely a young male celebrity who has every reason to be guarded with the use of his image but agrees to be on the cover of a men’s (non-dirty) magazine in only its second issue deserves to mentioned in our blog? Now better looking blog I might mention.
That and the fact that this issue contains interviews with Alexander McQueen, Editorials with Catherine McNeil, Sean Opry, Camilla Akrans and a whole feature shot underwater. Honestly, am I the only one supressing their child-like excitement here?

S/S trends from left: Martin Margiela, Alexander McQueen, Prada, Burberry Prorsum.
Trouser styles have been skinny for a long time, but mirroring womenswear trends the fashion-forward kecks seen on a trendy young man could just as easily be voluminous double-pleated, geek chic cropped, wide-leg, bootcut or dropped-crotch.
In a recent article in GQ style Charlie Porter waxes lyrical about the return of bootcut featured in Prada’s S/S show in a Italo-geek style. I don’t know if I’m ready for bootcut yet, but it took me a while to acclimatise to the return of pleats when Fantastic Man did a feature on them about a year ago. See after the jump to take our trouser trends poll.
