Is Everton’s Leighton Baines the footballer with the best music taste? His top albums of 2012 revealed – Tame Impala, Richard Hawley and more!

By Gerald Lynch on November 30th, 2012

Everton and England footballer Leighton Baines may have just revealed himself as the player with the best taste in music, after revealing his top albums of 2012 on the club’s website.

The defender picked Dr John’s “Locked Down” as his album of the year, saying he was impressed by The Black Key’s Dan Auerbach who had produced the album.

Baines also picked Richard Hawley’s “Standing on Sky’s Edge” as another of his favourite records of the year, rounding off his top album list with choice cuts from Jack White, Paul Weller, Lana Del Rey, Bob Dylan, The XX, Neil Young, Mark Lanegan, Grizzly Bear, Cat Power and Eugene McGuinness.

Tame Impala’s ‘Lonerisim’ is one of Everton defender Leighton Baines’s albums of 2012

Baines had particularly strong praise for “Lonerism” by rising stars Tame Impala saying that the album “builds on the psychedelic sound that Innerspeaker possessed and while still full of distortion, fuzz and effects, it is also more melodic and the songwriting is improved from Kevin Parker, whose multi-tracked vocals are very Lennon-esque.”As for debut albums, Baines went for Toy, Melody’s Echo Chamber and By The Sea, while picked out Haim, Savages and The Wicked Whispers as ones to watch in 2013.

It’s a refreshingly current and tasteful pick from Baines, whose indie taste sets him apart from the dance and hip-hop fans that make up the majority of professional footballers. Having said that, we remember a time when all footballers were obsessed with Phil Collins, so basically anything is an improvement over that.

Baines joins the slim ranks of footballers with equally good taste in music, who include retired ex-West Ham defender and Scotland star Christian Daily (who had his own band and counted Weezer as one of his favourite groups) and Graeme Le Saux, who revealed Joe Jackson’s “It’s Different For Girls” as the first record he ever bought. Pat Nevin was a big The The fan too; seems the Scots are the footballing nation with the best musical taste then!

What do you reckon of Baines choices? Does he really have the best musical taste in football? While we’re on the subject, check out Brandish’s top debut albums of the year, and our favourite singer/songwriter records of 2012 too.

Short shorts, the debate goes on…

By admin on March 26th, 2008

shortswham.jpgAs you may have noticed, Short shorts are a major topic of debate around Brandish. In fact, having failed to get my local MP to ask this at the House of Commons, I went to this week’s recording of Question Time. In between questions about the budget, I got up and yelled ‘but what about short shorts? Yay or Nay?’ I’ve got a funny feeling they won’t be airing that segment. It’s a shame really.

The whole short shorts debate has seen everything from Wham accusations to sly attacks on the colour purple (the actual colour, not the Oscar winning film). Reader Mark indirectly brought up the issue of people who are, shall we say, slightly larger than life wearing short shorts. That issue has been solved by the makers of skinny jeans – just don’t make them past a waist size of 36.

Chris Taylor’s madras shirt

By admin on March 25th, 2008

three check madras shirts vintage.jpg
So the news is in on the provenance of Chris Taylor’s shirt and unfortunately it’ll be hard to get the exact same one. With the nonchalance of someone who doesn’t have a 9 to 5 job (jealous, moi?) the Grizzly Bear clarinettist simply replied:
It’s just a thrift store shirt I found somewhere on tour
Which means that if you want to emulate the look you’ll have to scour the vintage shops or simply take your pick from the three shirts I’ve dug out for you. Product details after the jump.

Tartan wallet from Dover Street Market

By admin on March 18th, 2008

No word from Grizzly Bear about the provenance of that madras shirt but I’m not giving up on checks yet. This tartan wallet from Dover Street Market (£53) is a satisfying mix of colours which somehow looks more edgy than OAP. It’s a great way to add a bit of pep to a formal outfit and a cheery flash of colour will make parting with your cash less painful.

Top Five Chris Taylor-style madras shirts

By ShinyMedia on March 13th, 2008

When Paul, one of our commenters asked where he could find a madras shirt similar to the one Chris Taylor from Grizzly Bear is sporting in my short shorts post I went on a madras mission. I’m waiting to hear from Gizzly Bear’s publicist about the actual shirt (which will probably end up coming from a thrift store) but in the meantime here are my top five shirts to give you your madras fix. Land’s End seem to know their madras and their shirt is pretty cool but the jonquil colourway (behind the shirt) beats the moss green hands down. See after the jump for the rest of the picks.

Grizzly Bear show how to wear short shorts

By ShinyMedia on March 10th, 2008

We were talking about Grizzly Bear at Shiny Towers today and when I had a look at their website I was struck by how well they wear short shorts. Short shorts made a small
ripple last year and are firmly embedded in the high street’s spring
summer collections but despite departed writer Tim’s wise advice I still think some people will shy away from
wearing them. I like the insouciance of singer Edward Droste’s outfit, and get the feeling that a shirt is the only way to work this look.
Take a look after the jump to see Chris Taylor who plays clarinet in the band looking cool in some short shorts. I particularly like the way he’s teamed them with a colourful madras shirt in quite feminine colours but still manages to look smart.
