Perfect hair grooming: step 1, buy a proper hairbrush

By Colin Chapman on January 16th, 2009

Kent_brushes.jpg

Traditionally part of a gent’s grooming kit, a proper hairbrush is a real treat for the hair and scalp and fits perfectly with our current ‘trad but modern’ zeitgeist.

Kent Brushes offer several styles and have been making high quality brushes since the eighteenth century. Choose between an easy-to-hold oval or classic military square brush, or even a handy travel size. The real bristle options come in chic beech/white or pure black bristles. Perfect for maintaining that side parting whilst giving your scalp some much-needed stimulation in these frosty days and a real investment from only £16.

Moustaches are here to stay!

By Colin Chapman on January 5th, 2009

moustaches.jpg

Facial hair, like formal dressing, shows no signs of losing fashion popularity anytime soon. There’s been a definite move though from full beard (though I don’t see those disappearing either) to statment moustache. What started out as a novelty item worn only by the genuine fashion freak or professional showman has started to edge towards the mainstream. In terms of the former, Issue 2 of Buck magazine featured Frederick Blood-Royale from the New York band Ox.Eagle.Lion.Man (and ex-beau of Peaches Geldoff) resplendently moustachioed. On a less extreme tip, Jude Law has kept his Sherlock Holmes tache post shoot, even on hols with Sadie, and looks great with it. Key to success are careful grooming and taking inspiration from past eras when a stylish, well shaped ‘tache madeth the man.

Gabe and Max are my grooming heroes

By admin on December 19th, 2008

I would want nothing more for Christmas than to be gently woken up by these two guys handing me a steaming mug of tea as they pick out my outfit. I could happily trot off to the shower knowing they were planning my clothes, hairstyle and make up for the day. Check out this video where they showcase their styling genius, mm hairgel.

AskMen.com Gives Us “Shaving Tips From Moroccan Street Shavers”

By Will Reid on December 9th, 2008

271083256_403c0ee266.jpgAskMen.com has recently proved to be a good source of interesting and insightful fashion features (at least once you’ve clicked through such literary gems as “Is a 3-some really worth it?” and an “Is Britney actually Hot?” poll.) A look at their Fashion section resulted in me reading a great article by P.A Parfond, the site’s weekly fashion correspondent, entitled “Shaving Tips From Moroccan Street Shavers.”

The feature is a look at the tips of three different barbers from within Morocco and Parfond reveals that the reason Moroccan barbers are the best shaver in the world is because “Moroccan street shavers hold the secrets to the perfect shave, no matter who the recipient…for them, shaving is an ancient art, one bound by rules and techniques that men growing up in the West are rarely introduced to.”

Kiehls and American Apparel make winter sun shopping a doddle

By Colin Chapman on December 7th, 2008

Off on a winter sun break? Picking up essentials for a trip at this time of year can be a shopping challenge as you try to locate that single dusty shelf of sun lotion amongst all the Christmas fare. With some clever choices, you can cut this down to a couple of visits.

First stop: Kielhls. Ultra Facial Moisturiser SPF15 doubles up as a daily moisturiser whilst helping to protect your face from any UV damage. Their ultra-light Hair Conditioner and Grooming Formula can be used as a leave-in that stops your hair drying out and keeps that side parting in place. Burts Bee’s lip balm (John Lewis) is an essential and lasts forever.

Meanwhile, American Apparel stock swimming shorts all year long so you don’t have to risk poolside shame in those baggy nylon trunks from the remainders bin. Pick up a light scarf and cardi for cooler evenings and you’re all set.

Rafael Nadal the Face Of Lanvin’s New Men’s Fragrance!

By Will Reid on October 3rd, 2008

rex_796866h.jpgFashionista, the site that is always in-the-know, has reported upon a WWD article that reveals tennis-supremo Rafael Nadal as the chosen face of French fashion-house Lanvin’s new fragrance for men, L’Homme Sport.

Nadal is the first tennis face to front the campaign of a French fashion house and the news of his appointment is causing quite the stir. Nadal recently became the Number 1 Tennis Player in the World, taking over from Roger Federer who is, himself, a bit of a fashion darling beloved by editors and designers from Anna Wintour to Oscar De La Renta.

Josh Hartnett Emporio Armani Diamonds- Just in Case You Missed It!

By Will Reid on September 30th, 2008

Josh Hartnett was revealed as the male face of the Emporio Armani ‘Diamonds’ fragrance earlier this year and now, the advert has been released! We’re yet to get you a review but when we do, I hope it’s better than this advert. I was expecting something a bit more dramatic- the ladies got full-on glitter sing-song from Beyonce Knowles!

Do You Dare: YSL Touche Eclat for Men!

By Will Reid on September 8th, 2008

toucheeclat2.jpgHungover, Sleep-deprived, Over-worked, Unfit, Uncared for, Blemish-ridden; not exactly the ingredients for a healthy and handsome male are they? Well now, who cares? After you’ve smudged the Guyliner and poked yourself in the eye with Manscara, you might feel yourself in need of a bit of YSL’s new Touche Eclat concealer for men.

Yes, the weapon of choice for fashion editors and socialites the world over has been produced (fragrance free) for men, allowing the male species to live a life of clear skin and hidden ugliness.

The only question is, after previous (and let’s face it, unsuccessful attempts) at man make-up, will this gold pen/magic wand be bought up by us men?

Brandish Poll: Chris Martin Reads Brandish?

By Will Reid on September 2nd, 2008

chrismartin.jpgIn previous months, I have reported on the possibility that maybe Brandish is read by major celebrities. We preempted Russell Brand’s short shorts, the change in mood of Mr Mill’s Style Column in the Sunday Time’s Style Magazine and now, it appears that our editor Isabelle may have inspired Coldplay frontman Chris Martin’s new haircut. Days after Isabelle claimed skinhead-inspired film ‘This Is England’ as style inspiration, Chris Martin has appeared at a BBC Radio 2 song session with his previously curly locks shaved off. Simple chance or Sartorial steal?

Anyway, what do you think of this new look? Continue reading to vote in our poll.

Guyliner, mancake, call it what you will: the male make-up revolution

By admin on July 30th, 2008

From our beauty site Kiss & Make Up:

Zac efronn.jpg

Male make-up is taking the entertainment industries (that’s cosmetics/ fashion/ music and film) by storm. No longer is a touch of bronzer and a dab of lipstick meant only for dressing-room gents; ‘guyliner,’ ‘mancake’ and ‘mank-up’ are all terms being more frequently used amongst the youth of today.

Everyone is searching for an adopter of this trend (because, let’s face it- after Beck’s ‘sarong’ drama no-one wants to be the first man standing.) Zac Efron seems to have been hoisted up as the sail of this cosmetics boat but I, as an image-conscious male, don’t exactly see Efron as one to mimic.

Jude Law’s Photoshop Job for Dior Homme Sport!

By Will Reid on July 23rd, 2008

Perez Hilton has got his hands on an image from the heavily anticipated Jude Law for Dior Homme Sport campaign. Hilton complains of the blatant photoshop-job surrounding Jude’s sudden wealth of hair, hence the equally blatant ‘FAKE’ scrawled across the image in trademark Perez style!

JustJared reports that Jude was shot by Australian photographer Daniel Askill in May, on location in the Bahamas. Askill says of the fragrance campaign; “it was hard for me to decide whether to take it on because I had directed an ad for Dior before with Hedi [Slimane], it was one of the last major projects before he left, so it was a very tumultuous time.”

Keep reading for more details and backstage (behind the camera?) gossip!

Lab Series Ab Rescue promises to tone your stomach

By admin on July 21st, 2008

lab series ab.jpg
From Kiss & Make Up, our beauty site:

Men are getting more and more body conscious nowadays, but it still surprised me to see slimming cream for them on the market. Of course, they call it Ab Rescue, and have it in sleek MACHO packaging, but essentially it’s a slimming cream.

It contains soya protein with Caffeine (sound familiar) as well as Creatine, and is meant to tighten and tone the abdominal area.

They stress you should use it when you want that ‘just been working out’ feeling, which is equivalent to a girl wanting to fit into her LBD. Aww, bless ‘em, they’re as paranoid as us! It’s £27 from Lab Series, and I’m sure the hot model on the display will have them buying it in bucketloads.

“Love Is Blind…” – True Or False?

By Will Reid on April 4th, 2008

vanity.JPGEveryone has had that person they wanted to impress; the girl, the guy, the parent, the boss. And what better medium than fashion? Whether it’s the Louboutin slutty-stiletto (for the girls let me say) or one of Armani’s finest suits, the right look can make or break a first date.

So when Mick Jagger, a living legend with everything but height and anti-wrinkle cream on his side, took his fiancée L’Wren Scott (6′ 4″ to Mick’s 5′ 10″) to the premiere of ‘Shine a Light’ (the Rolling Stones’ new ‘rockumentary’) it was clear that he felt the need to give himself a bit of a sartorial boost. So how true is it that “love isn’t finding a perfect person, it’s seeing an imperfect person perfectly?”

Read on for more celeb examples and rather mean imagery.

Yay or Nay? Make up for men

By admin on March 20th, 2008

monsieurr.jpg

Over at Kiss and Make Up Zara is showcasing JPG, the range of men’s make up by Jean Paul Gaultier, which is an extensive line of 17 products ranging from a fairly conventional face scrub to a more adventurous ‘fluid bronze multi complexion’.
My indie-boy friends in their youth used to sometimes smear a bit of eyeliner or mascara for a night out and some of my gay friends have been known to whack on a bit of fake tan or a hint of blusher but that’s as far as it goes make up-wise for them.
We’re going to put the JPG cosmetics to the test soon on an unsuspecting staff member in what should be a memorable video, but in the meantime take our poll to let me know what you think of manouflage.
