Rock ‘n’ roll can be broken down as follows: 10% fashion, 10% music andĀ 110% HAIR. We know that adds up to 130%. That’s why we’re writing for a fashion site and aren’t quantum physicists. But it also acts to highlight just how important good hair can be in the making of a musical and cultural icon, and cementing the status of bona-fide rock ‘n’ roll stars. Where would Elvis be without his quiff? Or Bowie’s Ziggy Stardust without his…hisĀ unique style? On the dole queue, that’s where. Here, Brandish pick out the 20 most iconic hair styles in rock ‘n’ roll history.
Scroll down to get started!
David Bowie
Flaming red with a quiff up top and party mullet at the back, David Bowie's transformation into Ziggy Stardust was one of the most striking in pop history. With the sci-fi influenced Ziggy Stardust look, Bowie opened the floodgates for a whole sea of androgynous stars and, to a lesser extent, made homosexuality and bisexuality less of a rock 'n' roll taboo in the process.

Perma-pout Ed Westwick had a sharp slicked-back do, which always looks good for formal occasions. Use pomade and a fine-tooth comb to acheive this look, we like Black & White Lite for this.
Mark Ronson wasn’t wearing his Topshop jacket but still sported a cobalt blue shirt. His mighty quiff is helped by the fact he has a thick head of hair, but Trevor Sorbie’s styling clay and a small blob of mousse will help achieve that hold without too much shine.
Surprisingly ex-Blue member Lee Ryan also sported a great do. Shorn on the sides and with a slight quiff, it’s not too OTT but still has style. You can achieve this with a little blow-drying and some Elnett hairspray.

Clothing, Entertainment, Grooming

It looks as if, this summer, you will be mercilessly defined by your haircut. We’ve outlined a few of the trendiest, the possible need for back-up in a can, and now, I have a new look. This piece of major hairspiration comes in the form of the ‘Pale Fountain’ editorial in the latest issue of Crash magazine. I’m loving the almost bark-like quality of this model’s gorgeous copper locks and his overall effortless look means that he can play up his fashion with structural shapes, patterns and brash fabrics (check the velvet and plaid after the jump!) This follows on with the current trend for vampires, supernatural adolescents and dewy youths. So, next up should really be a post on how to find inner vampire. Oh, what a job!
See more from the editorial after the jump!

Mad props to Tavi for uncovering this gem, looking at the images of convicts on Least Wanted’s Flickr page immediately made me think of Style Salvage Steve’s amusing hairstyle gif.
I like the nonchalant quiff in the top image, and the mini Little Richard-style pompadour in the second picture, surely a little inspiration if you’re bored of your current ‘do? There are some cracking images after the jump, an Irishman who was arrested for being ‘Communist (drunk)’ and a wonderfully handsome man who was arrested for being ‘invert’. We definitely don’t approve of that sort of thing.
