Film related fashion: Public Enemies

By cchapman on July 10th, 2009

Depp_Oxblood_hat.jpgOn first impressions, current gangster blockbuster Public Enemies starring messrs Depp and Bale may seem to offer little in the way of fashion inspiration. Being so familiar, the gangster genre is not one that can shed a light on looks we may have forgotten about or didn’t know before. But, as ever with menswear, its all about the detail.

And with this film its the hats – fedoras to be precise. Wonderful New York blog all plaid out gives a fascinating view of Optimo, the classic brand who created the said fedoras for the movie. One of those brand insights that leaves you yearning for bygone eras of quality and craftsmanship. I particularly love the detail about the oxblood hat that Depp wears being a colour that “In certain lights looks black in others dark brown”. With fashion for autumn being largely about a certain restrained luxury, details like these should be treasured as inspiration for the coming months.

Boater! The straw hat of choice for summer

By Colin Chapman on May 17th, 2009

Thumbnail image for 6a010535d07789970c01156f15e53b970c-800wi.jpgAs fashion continues to trawl the Americana back catalogue, the boater pops up as a summer hat option. You’ll need bags of attitude to carry it off as well as this uber-Lower East Side hipster (it’s photographer Dash Snow) but hell, you can try.

ASOS have the perfect hat (by B-Store) in black. It’s a pricey £175 but the rest of your outfit can be dirt basic (check Mr Snow’s Canal Street leather holster, white tee and black jeans combo) or keep an eye on ladies’ boater options on the high street. ASOS also have a bargain, natural boater with coloured, striped ribbon. It’s more likely you’ll face Colonel Sanders quips but is possibly a better option if you’re pale and interesting and working the Anglo take on the boater hat style. Just lay off the striped blazer to avoid period costume.

Yay or Nay: Coolio’s Gangsta Get-Ups

By Will Reid on January 8th, 2009

rex_836233bz.jpgThis season of Celebrity Big Brother (CBB) has been very eventful and a glittering line-up including LaToya Jackson, Verne Troyer and Coolio means that each day is not without a bit of frock horror. Coolio has been catching my attention recently with his various looks. While his personality and jokes are fantastic, I can’t say I am a fan of his headwear or customised (by which I mean studded, embellished and gem-covered) jackets!

What do you think? Vote in our poll after the jump.

By Will Reid on July 22nd, 2008

Cactus.jpgStephen Jones, the milliner extraordinaire and all-round fashion hero, has just released his collection for Spring/Summer 2008 and it is the ‘Cactus Hat’ from this ‘Desert Rose’ JonesBoy collection that takes place as the 19th thing on our WISHLIST.

The ‘Cactus Hat’ is a mixture of wool and beads and shows a desert landscape (or at least the kind of desert where each cactus plant is perfectly tipped with a vibrant orange bead.) So who needs the summer? We might not be getting any sun but now you can wear the season on your head while actually staying warm.
