Rare are the occasions when I disagree with Hadley Freeman, there was a bit of fuss about bright opaque tights when her book came out but on the whole she’s a good ‘un.
Today in Guardian though Hadders was less than enthusiastic about the Comme des Garçons collection for H&M saying: “while Comme’s granddad styles might look like the apogee of chic when done with the highest quality of fabrics and sold in the snootiest of department stores, the budget versions, one suspects, will have a different look.”
Ok so the hammer pants may not become one of the bestsellers but the menswear is actually pretty good. We featured pictures yesterday and I think this will be one designer collection the men can actually get their teeth into, for once.

Pictures of the forthcoming Comme des Garçons collection for H&M have been leaked to Fashionista and my intial verdict is thumbs up for the menswear. The women’s collection might be a little overly quirky (I’m reserving final opinion for when the range hits the shops) but the menswear is spot on, no pun intended. Rei Kawakubo has obviously retained CDG’s spirit in a surprisingly mainstream collection. From what I can see it’s a mix of quality tailoring with some well-placed, original flourishes like bias-cut fabrics and contrasting buttonholes.
Can I put in a request for polka dots to take the crown from stripes? We just need to find a successor to plaid for next spring. Answers on a postcard please.

We talked briefly about H&M’s fashion forward capsule collection and now that pictures are available, we can all get a good gawk at them. Whilst it ultimately comes down to fit and build quality, on first look I’m slightly disappointed.
There’s a reliance on the colour grey, presumably to tone down the edginess of the looks and some of the pieces have already been done on the high street. On the bright side, I do like the look of the blazer on the far right and Rick Owens-esque long sleeved shirt (far left) looks like it could be an interesting piece. You’ll be able to judge for yourself come mid September, when the collection is released.

H&M have decided to put a little more elbow grease into their menswear line, focusing on a sort of premium range that will be at thirty stores worldwide. Although no mention is made of COS in the article, it’s likely that the success of their upscale big brother has led them to the conclusion that men will gladly pay more for higher quality.
According to head of men’s design Ann-Sofie Johansson, the collection will focus on daring pieces like jumpsuits, fake fur coats (hopefully like the one that was on Asos) and pieces with clever detailing. The collection will be available in Austria, Belgium, Canada, Hong Kong, Denmark, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, The Netherlands, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, United Kingdom and United States from mid September.

Roberto Cavalli’s H&M diffusion line was a major success sales wise but he’s unlikely to do another range, if a recent Telegraph interview was anything to go by. In the interview, Cavalli also stated that he “detest(s) men – dressed or naked” – which goes a long way to explaining why his menswear range for H&M was so awful.
His main gripe was with celebrity diffusion lines, on which he says “I’m very much against all these celebrities doing diffusion lines…Kate Moss’s collection was badly made, stupid and bland; you see things like that everywhere. You can’t just buy things for the label – it’s ridiculous.”

After too many torturous nights of Cotton Eye Joe and Cowboy-clad cankles, customised boots have been effectively ruined. From D&G to Calvin Klein, embellished boots have done the rounds this season and I want in on the action. My brown leather Chelsea’s have blurred into wardrobe background and now I’m looking out for glittery, brightly coloured boots without any Simon Cowell heel. I don’t want hi-tops or Converse-style trainers but proper Dior Homme-on-a-budget boots.

The closest I’ve come to being this excited about an H&M collaboration is the forthcoming Marimekko collection, but the news that Comme Des Garçons are planning a collection with H&M surely tops them all.
The collection will include womenswear and menswear as well as accessories and a unisex fragrance which I can’t wait to sniff! Rei Kawakubo, Comme des Garçons’ designer and founder is also producing a few children’s pieces.
Margareta van den Bosch, who recently took semi-retirement but is still at H&M as creative advisor said: “Rei Kawakubo has been at the top of our wish list for a long time and we are thrilled that she has chosen to collaborate with us.” Visit Catwalk Queen to keep reading.

Rihanna, Timbaland and Brandish favourite, designer Henrk Vinskov are amongst the artists who have collaborated with H&M and Designers Against AIDS on a new collection of T-shirts and tops aimed at raising awareness of AIDS amongst 15-24 year olds.
I only hope we’re not getting fatigued with all these charity initiatives as some of the facts that this initiative is highlighting are quite galling and deserve attention: 50% of new infections are amongst 15-24 year olds; 12 million young people now carry the HIV virus; and every 15 seconds, a young person is infected. As Henrik’s T-shirt states: “Be Aware – It’s still happening”.
The collection launches in February and is good and cheap as you’d expect form H&M (£7.99 – £19.99). 25% of the profits go to helping prevent HIV infection around the world.

H&M have got a great range of men’s watches this season, my personal favourite is the retro design above. With it’s boxy characters and circle cutouts on the strap it’s perfect to a add a bit of style to a plain suit outfit. You can get your mitts on the watch for £29.99, which is reasonable enough to leave you some cash for novelty socks.

There’s no denying that women get the best deal on the high street but COS, the latest H&M offshoot offers what I think might be the best high street clothing for men. I paid a visit to the Regent’s Street store this morning and tried on some of their women’s clothing, but for obvious reasons couldn’t get dressing room shots of the men’s stuff! I did have a good look though and it’s all fashion conscious, without trying too hard. Simple clothes allow features like interesting cuts, on-trend colours and pretty prints to shine. There was lots of dove grey, navy and chartreuse green. See after the cut for more COS images.

Another icon, this time the wonderful David Bowie who
is curating an H&M sponsored music festival in New York this May. The High Line festival is a new multi-discipline arts festival that will be curated by a different artist each year. Spread over ten days there will be music, comedy, film, visual art and performance all handpicked by the Thin White Duke himself. The festival is named after the area which contains the High Line, a disused
elevated rail structure soon to be a community space with wetlands and meadows which runs
through the Meatpacking District, West Chelsea and Hells
Kitchen. Bowie picks for the festival include Arcade Fire, Laurie Anderson, art by Claude Cahun and comedy with Ricky Gervais.
