“Rake-thin, 12 year-old-looking, alien-eyed lady-boys”- this is how one of my friends describes the male models of today. While I don’t quite agree with his overly-harsh and rather sweeping statement, I have to admit that there are times where the men plastered over magazines and high-fashion ad campaigns just seem completely out-of-touch.
Whether you’re still shopping for gifts or have given up on largesse and want something to peruse on these (still many more) cold winter nights, Taschen’s book of William Claxton‘s classic photos of Steve McQueen, republished in October this year, is a beautiful, inspiring thing. Each classic image shows you what and how to wear; from shawl collar cardigans to a stunning ensemble of Barracuta jacket, cashmere sweater and cords all in the softest pastels, Mr McQueen was a very stylish man.
Buy this and you need never look further for style inspiration. Attention to detail minus self consciousness seems an attitude very of the moment given the ongoing trend for classics remade with modern luxury. The book has been flying off the (virtual) shelves but at the time of writing copies are available from SameDay Books or the inevitable Amazon.
Tavi, the girl-wonder-blogger with a fashion sense so incredibly brilliant I feel like crying when I ‘m reading her blog, has found this picture and decided that she wants to marry the wearer of this great, gold jacket.
I’m okay with just being his friend but it is an undoubtedly fantastic image.
Now, the only question is where to find that jacket.
The Barack Obama bandwagon grows by the second, with Donatella Versace dedicating her SS09 collection to him. Versace stated that Obama’s style is for “a relaxed man who doesn’t need to flex muscles to show he has power.”
Obama will probably just thank Versace and move on, because he’s already been slated for being a ‘GQ candidate’. The thinking behind that slur is ridiculous, as it insinuates that spending time on your appearance has to be to the detriment of other characteristics. This also shows just how famous Obama is right now, with a world renowned designer using his name to garner some press attention.
