Skyfall suffers Oscar nominations “Best Picture” snub in favour of Django Unchained and Lincoln

By Gerald Lynch on January 10th, 2013

It seems both critical acclaim and box office record breaking isn’t enough to get a Best Picture Oscar nomination these days, as Skyfall, the 23rd James Bond film released in the series’ 50th anniversary year failed to be considered alongside the year’s best films.

This morning’s announcement of the 85th Academy Awards nominations instead saw Armour, Argo, Beasts of the Southern Wild, Django Unchained, Les Misérables, Life of Pi, Lincoln, Silver Linings Playbook and Zero Dark Thirty all going head to head for the most coveted prize in Hollywood.

Skyfall did manage to secure a few nominations in some of the smaller categories however, with Adele’s “Skyfall” track getting an obvious nod for Best Original Song, as well as nominations in the Original Score, Cinematography, Sound Editing and Sound Mixing areas.

It’s a shame – Bond was back in a superb thriller that, while not particularly high-brow, delighted audiences and delivered one of the most exciting, stylish and tasteful action films in recent years.

Softening the blow slightly, the Oscar ceremony will include a segment celebrating 007′s half-century anniversary.

“We are very happy to include a special sequence on our show saluting the Bond films on their 50th birthday,” said the producers of the Oscars show, Craig Zadan and Neil Meron.

The full list of nominees across all categories can be found here.

Moore backs Skyfall’s Craig, not Connery, as the best James Bond ever

By Gerald Lynch on October 15th, 2012

Connery, Lazenby, Moore, Dalton, Brosnan, Craig; six James Bonds, but which is best? At least three of them are too old to fist-fight for the title, so who do we turn to for a definitive answer?

Why, Bond himself, that’s who! Roger Moore, the third James Bond, has once again given Daniel Craig his blessing, calling the Skyfall star the best 007 at the ”An Evening With Roger Moore” event at the Rose Theater in Kingston-Upon-Thames.

Speaking at the event, Moore said:

“I was invited on Saturday morning to a private screening of Skyfall. Now, I have always said that the best Bond was obviously Sean [Connery], but I’m happy to say when Skyfall is released on October 26, it is going to be the biggest [Bond film] there has ever been in the cinema, and he [Daniel Craig] will go down as the best Bond in history. It is fantastic.”

Speaking on his 85th birthday to promote his new book, Bond on BondMoore added:

“Before I saw Skyfall, I felt very angry about the way that the English press treated Daniel Craig. Before he’d started [Casino Royale] they predicted doom and gloom and they criticized him.

“I used to write letters of support to him, and I was so pleased when I saw Casino Royale because he was truly excellent in it. He’s a wonderful actor, if you’ve seen Munich or In Cold Blood, you know he’s a terrific actor.”

So, the debate will almost certainly rage eternal, but you can’t get a better judge of Bond than a former Double-O himself really, can you?

Skyfall hits cinemas on November 9th, while Moore’s book is out now.

007 Fragrance: The smell’s Bond, James Bond

By Gerald Lynch on July 30th, 2012

Fancy smelling like James Bond? No, it’s not some clever olfactory disguise devised by the inimitable Q, but rather a new men’s aftershave called 007 from P&G launching exclusively online and in-store at Harrods from 15th August 2012.

Harking back to the Fougere perfumes of the 1960s (arguably the first “hero scent” range for men), the 007 Fragrance “flawlessly combines irresistible sophistication with uncompromising masculinity [...]culminating in a robust signature scent which embodies the duality of Bond.”

Ingredients include the strong vetyver, blended with lavender and apple, all packed in a glass flacon bottle as sleek as some of Bond’s motors.

“It has been an exciting experience coming together and working with P&G to create the debut James Bond fragrance,” said Keith Snelgrove, global business director of James Bond’s production house EON.

“This is a special year for 007, and we are thrilled to launch this distinctive and sophisticated scent during Bond’s 50th anniversary year.”

Expect to pay £32 for 75ml bottle and £42 foe a 125ml bottle.

Adidas Originals by Originals James Bond for David Beckham 2011 Fall/Winter

By Laura on October 16th, 2011

Adidas have rolled out the much anticipated third installment of the popular David Beckham / Design by J. Bond collection for Fall/Winter 2011.

The collaboration between sport and style icon David Beckham and Undefeated founder James Bond has been widely celebrated in the past, and will yet again see a contemporary range of footwear, outerwear, and accessories.

Much of the inspiration has clearly been pulled from collegiate imagery and has a very traditional American sportswear feel to it. This is something we have seen a lot of in the last two seasons. The varsity jacket in particular seems to be making a comeback. What do you make of this trend – will you be rocking the look this Fall/Winter?

Christophe Decarnin Jumps On The Menswear Bandwagon!

By Will Reid on November 27th, 2008

00390m.jpgWWD has confirmed the widespread rumour that Christophe Decarnin is to design a menswear range as part of the Balmain label. Apparently, it will be launched at Men’s Fashion Week in Paris next January.

Decarnin has transformed the Balmain label into a fashion so on the edge it’s almost falling off and his collections have become a staple at each season’s Paris shows. The Balmain show of this season featured a Madonna soundtrack and rah-rah skirt haute couture that, in these times of economic crisis, looked set to be a bit of a failure. However, as is the fashion way, magazines have been calling in the collection left, right and centre and Fashionista has stated that it will no doubt be the same with Balmain Menswear.

Either way, I just want Christophe to know that he can send any samples in the direction of Shiny Towers for a full review (and road-test!)

Quantum of Solace première

The Quantum of Solace première last night was such a big affair even the Royal Family turned up, Princes Harry and William chatted to Chelsea pensioners as profits from the evening went to Help For Heroes and the Royal British Legion.

Daniel Craig
sported a sling as he was still recovering from a shoulder operation. Both he and girlfriend Satsuki Mitchell scrubbed up well, him in a neat suit and her in a intricately beaded evening gown. Is it me or is his suit a dark navy? Either way the slim lapels and gently fitted cut looks great.
Bond baddie Mathieu Amalric went for an unusual choice of a double breasted suit without tie but he has more than enough Gallic chic to carry off the insouciant look.

Jump through to see who else got the fashion thumbs up.

Quantum of Solace premières tonight and while we wait for the celeb pictures to filter through take some time out to groom yourself to Bond standards.

You might not have a Daniel Craig’s superstar budget but with a little TLC you can make yourself the object of any man or woman’s affections. A moisturiser with SPF is an immediate shortcut to smoother, younger looking skin and if you can’t make it to the Groucho Club for a martini a quick squirt of this scent will give you the 007 aura.
Clinique age defense hydratorwith SPF: £25. Demeter martini cologne: $20.

If David Beckham moves to Milan will he visit Pitti Uomo?

By admin on October 22nd, 2008

David Beckham’s possible January loan to AC Milan is big news in football but all I can think about is whether he’ll start dressing more like an Italian… hey, even James Bond, the quintessential English gent wears Brioni.

I’m hoping we’ll see pictures of him at Pitti Uomo hanging out with Kanye West and Gianni Versace. Much better than Tom Cruise as a fashion buddy anyday; L.A’s loss is Milan’s gain so fingers crossed!

UPDATE! Sean Connery for Louis Vuitton

By Will Reid on October 9th, 2008

Annie Leibovitz, Sean Connery, the Bahamas, Marc Jacobs and plenty of Louis Vuitton- sounds like a pretty enticing mix, doesn’t it? Well no longer must it remain a fantasy as days after Brandish giving you the gossip,WWD has released the ex-007′s advert for the French luxury-fashion house. After Keith Richards and Francis Ford Coppola, Leibovitz has again captured a mature cool that is slowly abolishing the bling/label-whore mood often synonymous with Vuitton’s accessories. The image above tells that “some journeys turn into legends” and the campaign is called ‘Core Values,’ emphasising heritage and a more sophisticated, timeless approach to fashion.

In these times of economic crunch, I know that I’ll be looking for pieces to invest in and that might just extend to a collection of these campaign images.

License to wear Louis Vuitton

By Jonathan Smith on September 26th, 2008

rex_592398g.jpg

According to WWD Sean Connery, ex Bond and cantankerous old man could be the next face of Louis Vuitton.

Louis Vuitton, which has featured Mikhail Gorbachev, Keith Richards and Francis Ford Coppola in its “core values” advertising campaign, has landed another surprising agent for its message. Rumor has it Sean Connery, the original James Bond, has posed for Annie Leibovitz’s camera, just in time for the “Quantum of Solace” frenzy.

I would LOVE it if this were true, more old men in adverts I say! And pipes, definitely more pipes!

Vogue Germany- August 2008: Daniel Craig

By Will Reid on July 15th, 2008

“Before Breakfast, I Am No Style Icon.”

It was revealed yesterday afternoon that the latest issue of Vogue Germany has a multiple cover. One goes to Toni Garrn and the other to Brandish fave, Daniel Craig.

Daniel is shot by Rankin in a relatively boring editorial, and the cover headline is “Mr. Style & Mrs. Chic.” I like the colour palette of hot red with the white-light background and cool colours of Craig’s outfit, but the pout is a bit off and the turn of this good-looker’s head makes it look as if he has an odd and inflamed left-ear.

Read on for some shocking German translations and more details of this issue.
