A day out in London and I found myself wandering over to the Photographers’ Gallery in Soho, where they’re showing ‘Soho Nights‘, an exhibition of images taken by Ken Russell.

Seeing the underground bars and jazz halls of Soho was interesting enough, but obviously my eyes couldn’t help being drawn to the clothes. Street style was pretty much unheard of in the ’50s, so the chance to see hip young things in the ‘wild’, so to speak, is an opportunity not to be missed! I love the chunky woollen jumper in the photograph above, teamed with the beret it’s the height of insouciant chic. Jump through for a great image of a barefoot man lindy hopping with a young woman in great wide leg trousers.

Walter Hanlon’s images of ’50s jazz scene at National Portrait Gallery

By ShinyMedia on January 10th, 2008

From the 21st of January to the 20 of July 2008, the National Portrait Gallery will host an exhibition honouring some of jazz’s hippest chicks and coolest cats.  Photographer Walter Hanlon has immortalised the 1950′s London jazz scene with rare images of musicians ranging from Sir John Dankworth to Cab Calloway.

The showcase comes on the eve of the publication of Hanlon’s pictorial book 1950s Jazz in London and Paris. The cost of this exhibition…free. A piece of jazz and style history…priceless.
