I read Robert Elms’ marvellous book The Way We Wore last week. If you haven’t read it it is a fascinating, and very personal dissection of British youth cults and the clothes that were associated with them, throughout the 70s and 80s.
It descends into a quagmire of narcissism towards the end as Elms seems to spend his life chasing after stupidly expensive, and quite possibly awful, 80s Japanese suits.
Nevertheless he does take the mickey out of himself a bit so I can forgive him a great deal (not this though).
Anyhow Elms says in the book that when it comes to knitwear there is only one brand and that’s Derbyshire’s finest John Smedley. And I couldn’t agree more.
Well the brand also does a very striking line in cotton polo shirts – the sort of thing that Sean Connery wore inn the early Bonds when he needed a spot of causal.
Anyhow this shirt named the Mercer, looks great, and very Spring-like in light blue. It is also available in navy, black and peacock blue in limited stocks. They are priced at £54 down from £99. You will need to sign in to see them though.

English label John Smedley, who might just be our favourite knitwear maker ever, have added a load of new jumpers and polo shirts to its sale site.
You’ll need to register to get in, but once you do there is a selection of very striking round and V neck sweaters in its sale reduced for £75 to just £40. The colours are very spring/early summer and include Nocturne (kind of purpley blue), Almond (a beige/white mix) and Dove Blue (which is classic light blue).
There are also some polo type shirts in the sale reduced in price by around 45% to around the £50 mark. There are long and short sleeved shirts available. The short sleeved ones are made from Merino Wool, while the long sleeved shirts from Sea Island Cotton.
As ever you’ll have to move quickly.

If you have never visited John Smedley’s discount store right next to their factory in Derbyshire you really should. They have lots of end of line items, slight seconds and more at very very cheap prices.
If you live a million miles from Derbyshire and still want to grab one of their wonderful sea island cotton cardigans or extra fine merino wool jumpers then you need to become a member of the brand’s discount scheme.
Every few weeks they have a new sale and the one that is going on at the moment includes some classic styles. You’ll have to move quickly as they only have limited stock left, but there’s a selection of Sea Island Cotton cardigans for sale all at half price-ish £50 rather than £95. The brand is also offering a selection of roll neck jumpers down from £85 to £42.
At their main site a load of knitwear is in the sale. Merino Wool jumpers and cardigans are retailing for around £100 which is a third off their original retail price. I have had my eye on this for some time.
Every man should own at least one John Smedley jumper.

In Winter, at least, the obvious purpose of a scarf is to keep your neck warm, but sartorially speaking a scarf has a multitude of uses from adding a splash of colour to an otherwise slightly dull suit through to adding a degree of formality to casual clothes.
Personally I am a die-hard stripey or houndstooth scar wearer. They can look superb when contrasted with plain knitwear – like a decent Merino or Cashmere jumper. You can buy stripeys everywhere from high street stores to the real thing – college scarves which these days are more likely to be found in vintage stores than charity shops.
A chunky scarf adds texture to your outfit, as does a lively pattern. A scarf can also be a block of colour which livens up your outfit (take note suit wearers!), be aware of the colour of your coat because generally speaking, the brighter the colour the worse it looks with black. Think of fuchsia or neon yellow with black; they could both look tacky unless done well. Choose a shade which is more unexpected think pumpkin, cobalt blue or forest green. Pick the right colour and it’ll liven up your winter complexion too!
Using your scarf as the finishing touch to a certain outfit works really well, think of Terry Thomas‘ silk scarves, they add a dose of panache to his look. Tootal has been kitting out well-heeled gentlemen in scarves for decades so they are a good place to start. If you have a bit more budget then Drake’s is the brand for silk scarves.
Don’t forget Savile Rogue too. It has been making Cahsmere footy type scarves for a while now and they are very classy – think Roberto Manicini more than Neil Warnock…

One of the likely big trends in women’s wear for next is year monochrome black and white. Think Bridget Riley, op art, stripes of varying lengths, maybe a bit of dogs tooth too.
Apparently stripey op art style dresses by the likes of Marc Jac0bs are predicted to drip on down to the High St.
Chances are that the mod monochrome look will also have an influence on menswear too, which is good news for the heritage brands who t are always selling 60 influenced clothes. Here are few items that are likely to be (coughs) bang on trend next year.

There is a bit of trend in comedy jumpers this season. You only need to check out River Island’s selection to see how prevalent they are. If you want knitwear that doesn’t have to be teamed up with paper hats and plastic cracker jewelry that you can wear all winter long then check out this lot.
These are our favourites of the season. All classic jumpers. All very stylish and a little more conservative than our last selection.

As a rule Christmas hampers tend to be fairly rubbish affairs stuffed with weird dried fruit and odd combination pickles that chances are will reach their sell by date before you get round to sampling them.
However, ace British knitwear company John Smedley have come up with an alternative hamper this year which might be pricey, but is a must have addition to our Christmas list. For your £259 you get a classic Bobby pull over – which are made from top notch merino wool and come in lots of different colours – a Thymus Merino wool scarf packaged in a very striking branded wooden box. They also throw in a £25 voucher and some special wool wash too.
You’ll have to get moving though if you want one. You need to order by Monday 19th if you want the box to arrive before Christmas.

This is the point in the year when layering becomes essential. With your peacoat professionally cleaned and (hopefully) being relegated to the wardrobe until autumn, what you need now is some flexible options. One of my perennials is a Sea Island cotton cardigan by John Smedley. Heavier than the usually slinky Sea Island fare, this cardigan will keep the breeze at bay whilst allowing you to breathe comfortably during those sweaty Tube moments. I’ve literally had a black version of this cardie for years, actually re-dyeing it black when it starts to fade. It’s a great shape – short on the waist – with chunky, retro-looking buttons.
The version here is in a very now shade of blue that is cropping up everywhere – most notably at Jil Sander – and looks just perfect for summer. I had to pretty much line up to try on this blue version at Selfridges recently, with all who spotted it cooing over the gorgeous blue shade – fetchingly named BlueEyedBoy.
Teamed with a cotton scarf in an ethnic print, you’re all set to react to our unpredictible weather like an expert.

If, for some bizarre reason, you haven’t hopped onto the Madras train yet we are still offering alternatives. Alternatives that don’t stray outside of the nautical look, but alternatives nonetheless.
We’ve featured a John Smedley version of this polo a while back but let’s face it – you’re not going to spend £122 on a polo shirt. This Full Circle polo is pretty much identical, I haven’t counted the stripes or anything, but I’d guess they’d be around the same amount. The FC one also has a pen pocket, something the Smedley one doesn’t even have. And to top it all off, it’s only £38.

Judging from the price drops at Asos, the
John Smedley collection isn’t selling very well. Originally at £100, it first
dropped to £50, now it’s dropped to a lowly
£32. I’m not surprised. Smedley’s uniqiue selling point was that Sean
Connery wears it. So what? He’s well into his 70′s now and his Bond days
were a long, long time ago. Not to mention terrible. Just like all Bond films.
But to get back on topic, this jumper is a
good staple piece; it’s well made, has soft cotton and fits well. Most
importantly, it’s at a price where it’s actually value for money, which is a
surprise for a John Smedley piece.

Fine knit jumpers are great for layering and much smarter than a hoodie, and very useful this time of year. John Smedley is perhaps the king of men’s knitwear, producing quality pieces that will last for years. This subtly striped Lambeth jumper in Waterloo colour combo is 100% cotton which will keep you cool and features a flattering v-neck. It will set you back £114, but quality doesn’t come cheap; this is a cassic piece well worth the investment.
