Arsenal update: Higuain deal close, Payet buzz, Villa off to Spurs?

By Stefano on June 24th, 2013

There is still no hard news coming out of Madrid this morning, which means that several news sites are running with ‘Gonzalo Higuain deal gets even closer’ type stories. At least a couple of sites have claimed that an Arsenal entourage are in Madrid and that Wenger may be jetting out to join them soon.

Goal also says that Higuain’s father has confirmed that talks between Real Madrid and potential suitors Arsenal and Juventus are at an “advanced stage” regarding the striker’s transfer.

Gunners officials have travelled to Madrid in order to finalise a move for the 25-year-old with Arsene Wenger’s side looking to tie up a deal for just over €20 million, while the Spanish club are looking for a figure of over €25m. The Premier League club have already agreed a contract with Higuain that will start with a wage of €115,000-a-week.

The reason why the deal hasn’t go through is largely believed to be because Real Madrid are without a manager at the moment. So it may take a week more before it all gets finalised.

Meanwhile Touchlinetalk has the lowdown on another key Arsenal target Florent Dimitri Payet. The site runs through the career history of the Frenchman who can play as a winger or an attacking midfielder. Payet is said to be a selfless player on the pitch and notched up a very impressive 18 assists at Lile this eason. He can however have his immature moments too highlighted by his altercation with former teammate Blaise Matuidi and failing to turn up to training. It will be interesting to see how this on pans out.

Finally it seems that Arsenal’s interest in Barcelona’s David Villa has dwindled away to nothing. According to a report in El Mundo Deportivo on Monday morning Spurs boss Andre Villas-Boas has instructed new director of football Franco Baldini to close a deal for Villa.

The disappointment for Villa is that Spurs can’t offer the player Champions League football, this season anyhow. Arsenal can give the player that platform but seem to have lost interest in signing the prolific Barca striker.

Higuain to Arsenal? Juventus are still in the hunt says their general director

By Stefano on June 21st, 2013

Just when it seemed that it was done deal and that Arsenal fans would be getting the marquee striker signing they crave comes the news that Juventus haven’t given up hope of signing Real Madrid’s Gonzalo Higuain.

In spite of rumours that the player has signed a £130,000-a-week contract to join the north London club and that Arsenal and Real were finalising the fee, Juve’s general director has said that he thinks the striker could still be bound for Italy.

Giuseppe Marotta told Italian television station Sky Sport Italia, which has been reported by The Star.

“Higuain? I do not want to say anything because there is still so much time left for things to happen.”

If the rumours are to be believed then time is the last thing that Morotta and Juve have.

So Arsenal fans is this going to be yet another player that slips through Arsene Wenger’s grasp?

Five reasons why Arsenal haven’t made any big signings yet – Wenger, Jovetic, Fabregas

By Stefano on June 6th, 2013

So no Jovetic, Higuain or Rooney. Well not yet anyhow.

Here are five possible reasons why Arsenal still haven’t secured that marquee signing.

1 Arsene Wenger’s contract talks got in the way – Today Arsenal’s CE Ivan Gazidis has said that he expects Arsene Wenger to sign a new contract very shortly. Maybe all the talk about his future was weighing on the Frenchman’s mind and that until it was sorted he wasn’t prepared to make those big signings the fans crave.

2 The Cesc Fabregas factor - I am still convinced that Arsenal were on the verge of signing Stevan Jovetic in the week following the end of the season. It didn’t happen for a number of reasons, but chief among them was the surprise ‘availability’ of Cesc Fabregas. As is well documented if Cesc did choose to leave Barca Arsenal would be his preferred destination. For Wenger to accommodate Fabregas in the team he would need to play him as a second, or ghost striker, which is almost the certainly the role he has envisaged for Jovetic. Until the Fabregas issue is resolved either way Wenger won’t sign a big money second striker.

3 The transfer money-go-round has not quite kicked off yet – There is always a point each summer when some club or other – previously it was Man City and Chelsea and this year it is also Monaco and PSG – start splashing the cash. This then kick starts the transfer market. Were Juventus, for example to sign either Higuain or Jovetic it would make the other one’s position clearer (and knock a few million of their price too).

4 The internationals – Several players, David Villa among them, have said that they expect their futures to be sorted out after the international games finish. Most of the friendlies will be over with a week and then the players and the agents will have time to focus on sorting out their futures.

5 Wenger still doesn’t know who he wants – So is the Frenchman indecisive in the transfer market? Well even if you think so you can’t deny that there have been many players who have slipped through the net because the Arsenal manager couldn’t make his mind up about them – Juan Mata and Gary Cahill being two very good examples. Also even with that stash of cash in the bank Wenger isn’t going to suddenly splash out large transfer sums and huge wages – that just isn’t his style.

If you want a few more…

He needed to offload the dead wood – some of this happened yesterday.

Jovetic can’t make his mind up either – his quotes about coming to Arsenal have been contradictory

He might be about to gamble on one huge signing – Cavani? Rooney?

Season ticket sales are going well – If they hadn’t been you can bet Arsenal would have signed a player before the renewals finish tomorrow

Any more?

Arsenal update – Jovetic claims, Wanyama keen and Higuain leaving Madrid

By Stefano on June 3rd, 2013

There’s plenty of Arsenal-related gossip so let’s kick off with the biggie.

Stevan Jovetic will become an Arsenal player very shortly! Well so says Caught Offside – so make of that what you will. Apparently Juventus’ campaign to sign the player has hit the buffers and Arsenal are now in pole position to secure the signature of the Montenegrin.

The website says

Arsenal have reportedly reached agreement on a fee for Fiorentina striker Stevan Jovetic, said to be in the region of €31m (£26m), and as personal terms with the player are said to have already been reached it seems only a matter of time before a deal will be completed.

I guess that even with £70 million burning a hole in his pocket Arsene Wenger is still careful with the cash which might be why this deal has gone on forever. It is still a case of I’ll believe it when I see it though…

Lots of sources are claiming that the young Kenyan midfielder Victor Wanyama is very keen on an Arsenal move with a figure of around £10 million mooted. However the Mail also has a story that Wanyama’s mentor Jean-Marie Abeels who has known the player since he was young thinks that the move might be step too far too quickly for the player.

He said

‘He is still young and I have told him he needs to be careful about when he takes the really big step.
‘I think myself that it’s better that he has a step in between before going to the really big level.’

Finally Gonzalo Higuain has put lots of clubs on red alert after confirming that he will be leaving Real Madrid in the summer.

The striker said:

“I am leaving Real Madrid, the decision has been made, I feel the time is right and I want a change of scenery.
“I have not decided where I will go, but the club already know that I want to go. It was my decision.
“I feel that this is the end of my cycle here. I came here for £10 million and I am leaving for more.
“I want to go where I can prove myself really. I have several offers. I hope that Madrid do the best for me and for themselves.”

I think the player is almost certainly Juventus bound but I’d also be surprised too if Arsene Wenger at least didn’t make enquiries about the player.

Jovetic to Arsenal update

By Stefano on May 20th, 2013

If Fiorentina’s talented Montenegrin is to join Arsenal three things needed to happen to make the deal certain. So let’s take a peek at those three things and where we are with them.

1 Fiorentina not to quality for the Champions League, but Arsenal to make it. Well thanks to Koscielny’s goal the Gunners will be in the draw for CL qualifying, but they won’t be facing Fiorentina, who were pipped at the line by Milan. Jovetic could well have stayed at the club had they qualified, but now it seems certain that he will go and seek Champions League football elsewhere.

2 Juventus not to chase the player – There have been rumours that the Italian Champions had been sizing up Jovetic for a while. However this morning Fiorentina sporting director Daniele Prade has revealed that Juventus have not spoken to him about the player.

Prade told Sky Italia

“We have said many times that an answer [over Jovetic's future] can only be given after a meeting between the president and Jovetic.”

“Juventus? I have not talked with them because they have never asked to talk.”

3 Wenger decides he wants the player - Earlier in the season it seemed like a done deal. However Jovetic’s second half of the season has been a little disappointing. He finished the year with just twelve goals. Wenger is clearly a huge fan – but he has other options too in Higuain, Villa and maybe even Rooney.

I think Jovetic will either be announced as an Arsenal player in the next 48 hours as the deal has already been done and now ratified following Arsenal’s qualification for the CL.

If that isn’t the case I wonder if it will run and run as Wenger seeks a bargain.

Why Arsenal will announce a new signing today

By Stefano on May 20th, 2013

So the speculation can finally end. Arsenal are back in the Champions League next year – well provided they negotiate the qualifying round – and that £70 million burning a hole in Arsene’s pocket can be used to buy some of Europe’s elite players.

One thing is for sure. Arsenal will announce a new signing in the next 24 hours.

Here is the theory. Arsenal haven’t been able to open season ticket renewals for gold members (the vast majority of their fans) until today as they didn’t know how many games they would be playing next year. With the season over they need that money in their bank account as fast as possible – in fact Gooners will only have ten days in which to pay it!

Economic pressure means that there is a section of fans who are mulling over a renewal of their season ticket. They need a reason to sign up for another year and quick.

So I wonder if those deals with Higuain and Jovetic – well at least one and quite possibly the former – will get announced today.

So expect Arsene to be busy today..
