Tinie Tempah’s new “Disturbing London” fashion range and other notable celebrity lines

By Gerald Lynch on April 19th, 2012

The ever-dapper Tine Tempah has been on the press offensive this week after launching his own clothing line, the Disturbing London range, exclusively for Selfridges.

A collaboration with streetwear label MH1, the GQ Best Dressed Man of 2012 will also be the face of the upcoming London Menswear Week in June.

“At the end of the day, I’m a 23-year-old male from inner city London. Of course I’m into tailoring – but in the right circumstances: swanky events, awards or fashion shows,” Tempah told The Telegraph.

“I want [the collection] to show the different layers of what makes me who I am. I thought it would be good to do something that was high-end streetwear, based around the whole Americana storm that is happening now.”

But Tine Tempah is not the first celebrity to launch a fashion line. Far from it in fact; from sports stars to popstars, many have dabbled with a needle and thread over the years (or at least gave the blessing to have their name attached to a project by those that do all the hard work).

Just this week Mancherster City’s Joleon Lescott launched his own fashion line, with a star-studded event that saw team-mates Yaya Toure, Nigel De Jong, James Milner Micah Richards and Adam Johnson checking out his threads.

In the pop world, having your own fashion line is just as common an occurrence as putting out your next album.

Rapper Sean John Combs (AKA Puff Daddy AKA P. Diddy AKA Diddy AKA Swag AKA…) also launched a line back in 1998. Sean John Inc. sold men’s shirts, jackets and trousers. The star has also invested heavily in other fashion brands, including couture label Zac Posen. He also bought Enyce from Liz Claiborne.

Mr Beyonce himself, Jay-Z, has had great success in the fashion industry. Based on his own “street-style”, the star’s Rocawear brand has brought in annual sales of over $700 million.

Justin Timberlake brought sexy back with his Willam Rast clothing line in 2006, working alongside childhood friend Trace Ayala. It was a denim-heavy line. Timberlake also designed a small collection for Target in 2010.

Outspoken Kanye West took a slightly different tact by launching a line aimed at ladies. A big fashion fan, Kanye has worked with Fendi and Louis Vuitton, and has often spoken of his admiration for designers Riccardo Tisci and Raf Simons. For his début line he enlisted the help of Brit designer Katie Eary.

Scroll down for a few pics of the dapper celebrities who have put their names to their own fashion lines:

André Leon Talley and Alber Elbaz at the Met Costume Gala

By admin on May 5th, 2009

andre leon talley alber elbaz met institute costume gala.jpg

It was quite a night for the men, John Galliano turned up in sheer tailoring, and Justin Timberlake was almost unrecognisable in glasses.

André Leon Talley turned up in a voluminous cape with a great mayoral style necklace. Note the jewelled pumps, we can only dream of this trend filtering onto the high street. Next, sweet-faced Alber Elbaz, who we love as much and as unreservedly as Michelle Obama. The suit and trademark bow tie all pass muster but the clogs need to go, maybe him and Talley can go shoe-shopping together?

By Will Reid on February 27th, 2009

The latest issue of American GQ looks set to be an exciting issue. While not the most fashion-forward of magazines, GQ manages to provide consistent style advice and it usually has at least a few good features.

In this issue, we have Justin Timberlake posing in a variety of stylish albeit bland looks and one of the most interesting looking features looks set to be their ‘Top 10 Most Stylish Men in America’ feature. Check back soon for the entire list with pics!

Yay Or Nay: Denim Deity?

By Will Reid on September 30th, 2008

Denim has been rife on the catwalks of this season with many big-name designers putting out denim tuxedos, denim waistcoats and even denim shirts (okay, that’s not too odd.) I, myself, have a bit of a love/hate relationship with this timeless fabric and I think it’s safe to say I’ve explored it thoroughly!

Brandish Poll: JT in Frock Horror Scandal?

By Will Reid on September 9th, 2008

Being the face of a Givenchy fragrance pretty much cements you as a style star (not that I would know but one must work on assumption when speaking of Britney-dating, ex-N*Sync stars!) Well, I was bitterly disappointed in Justin Timberlake’s outfit at the Fashion Rocks concert last week. JT wore a grey blazer from his new ‘William Rast’ range and a pair of hideous turn-up jeans with an odd silk tie- seemingly cut in half.

Is it just me who’s shocked by this lack of style sense? Vote in our poll below!

Love The Look: Menswear Maestro Michael Bastian at Fashion Rocks

By Will Reid on September 9th, 2008

Condé Nast’s fifth Fashion Rocks event was hardly devoid of well-dressed men: Valentino, Justin Timberlake (who’s fashion-savvy has become a matter of debate…well, for me anyway,) Gossip Girl’s Chace Crawford (who’s rumoured to have scored an up-coming VMAN cover.) My point is that, for a menswear designer, Michael Bastian more than held his own in this pantheon of celebs.

I love his vintage-looking blazer as well as his loafers and with an open shirt and a pair of well-tailored grey shorts, he is a vision of relaxed but high-fashion cool.

Notice the subtle pocket-square (an emblem of any well-dressed male) and devour this style inspiration.

Justin Timberlake’s William Rast

By admin on August 27th, 2008

From Catwalk Queen: The first trailers of Justin Timberlake’s multimedia campaign for his label, William Rast, have surfaced. Starring Erin Wasson, who actually injured herself in the making of these short films, they depict JT as William Rast, a Texan on the run with his girlfriend ‘Birdie’ played by Wasson.

JT was originally planning to take a step back until creative directors Johan and Marcella Lindeberg presented Timberlake with the idea.

Check out more trailers after the jump…

James Franco puts on a serious face for Gucci

By admin on August 20th, 2008

After Ewan McGregor for Davidoff and Justin Timberlake for Givenchy James Franco joins the latest ranks of celebs advertising male scents.
It’s ve-ery slick and deadpan, the black & white cinematography and deep voiceover are a million miles away from Franco’s early beginnings on Freaks and Geeks. The track is a Brian Ferry cover of Slave to Love done by the uber fashionista Roisin Murphy.

Givenchy persuades Justin Timberlake to wear fragrance

By admin on August 1st, 2008

justin timberlake givenchy play.jpgJustin Timberlake is abandoning his decade-old au naturel smell to become the face of new Givenchy scent ‘Play’. The singer was reluctant to smell of anything other than eau de Justin until Givenchy persuaded him that he would enjoy wearing the fragrance.

Timberlake told GQ: “First of all, I haven’t worn cologne in 10 years, since the days when I’d drench myself, until I realised I didn’t want to smell like something else, I wanted to smell like myself.

So when Givenchy approached me, I said, ‘I gotta be honest, I don’t wear a fragrance. If you can get me to wear it, it’s gonna have to be good. If you can win over a guy who doesn’t wear fragrances, it’ll be something fresh.”

Johan Lindeberg talks about William Rast

By admin on July 29th, 2008

news1007.jpgHaving next to no interest in celebrity clothing lines, I paid no attention to Justin Timberlake’s William Rast line. I’m slightly more interested after finding out that Johan and Marcella Lindeberg were the creative directors of the line. There’s an interesting interview with Johan about the line on Sportswear international.

In the interview he states that “William Rast has a strong language and a special touch. It shows an urban look with a very body-conscious and tough attitude, but with a tailored twist”.

Justin Timberlake signs for Givenchy

By admin on February 27th, 2008

Justin_timberlake_givenchyAnother day, another celebrity endorsement deal. Forbes report that Givenchy have signed Justin Timberlake to be the face of their new men’s perfume, which launches this autumn. The CEO of Parfums Givenchy released a statement saying that they chose La Trousersnake for his innate style: "He is a world-recognized trendsetter who redefines modern elegance."

Innate style, my foot and fourpence! Would someone with innate style be seen dead with his girlfriend wearing a matching denim outfits, let alone dressed up as Rag Dolly Anna (left)? I know it was the ’90s but my point is that JT might look good now but I suspect it’s only because his label’s employing a better stylist. To me, it always looks like the clothes are wearing him rather than the other way round.
Read the full story here and note how obsessed Forbes are with ranking and income -  a bit of subliminal advertising for their world famous lists.
