Celeb Style: Jay-Z does Geek Chic 2 Months After Matt Damon

By Will Reid on July 3rd, 2008

jayz.jpgLast Friday, Jay-Z turned up on Jonathan Ross and as the guestlist was revealed, I was delighted to see good ol’ Jay-Z rocking the Geek-Chic look. But sadly for Mr. Z (can we call him that?) Matt Damon had tried the look over two months before. Usually an all-round innovator and owner of his own label, I have come to expect more of this man with those infamous 99 problems.

Okay, okay- maybe Im being slightly sarcastic but let’s be honest; that beige jacket is rather horrific. However, I’m liking the ‘Globe-trotter’ scarf tied into the loop of his jeans and with quotes like “home was like the cliché of rough…when I was nine I saw someone shot for the first time” and “my favourite is heartfelt music… I listen to Coldplay, 50 Cent, Kanye West,” what’s not to love?

Men A La Mode summer sale

By admin on June 24th, 2008

menalacollage.jpg
With most sales selling out within hours these days, it’s refreshing to see that the Men a la mode sale still has stock an entire week after it started. There’s so many pieces on sale, you’ll probably be suffering from ‘embarrassment of riches’ syndrome. I just made that syndrome, but I bet someone out there has it.

To ease your pain, I’ve decided on the 4 best items in the sale (pictured above) – read all about them after the jump.

Rykiel Homme grey jeans

By admin on June 20th, 2008

rykieljeans.jpgSeeing as Rykiel Homme is closing down, their clothes will make the transition from good piece to collector’s item. Before that transition is made, a lot of it goes on sale. This brings us to these Rykiel Homme jeans.

These jeans look like a toned down version of those radioactive Dior Homme jeans that Kanye West put up on his blog a while back. The muted colouring is still sharp enough to stand out from other jeans and they’re also about £200 cheaper than the Dior version. You can get these from the corner for £84.

Esquire magazine’s best dressed list

By admin on June 11th, 2008

lupe-fiasco.jpg

Esquire magazine’s best dressed list has been gathering attention lately – mostly for not featuring David Beckham. Hopefully, other magazines will follow suit and realise that they’re not contractually obliged to include Mr Beckham on the list. People who did make the list include Jeremy Paxman, Barack Obama, Lapo Elkann, Fabio Capello, Christian Bale and Lupe Fiasco.

Kanye West is notably absent from the list and adding insult to omission, someone even manages to spell his name wrong. I wouldn’t describe Fiasco’s style as ‘outlandish hoodies and oversized trainers’ (how do they know his trainers are too big for him?) but West’s style is certainly more refined than Lupe’s.

Sometimes it is too late to hop on the bandwagon…

These are for the kind of person who thinks Razorlight are the greatest band in the world, reads FHM and thinks that Kanye West geezer has some great tunes. If you’ve ever wanted to look out of touch with pop culture, then you can get these shutter shades from ASOS.

Ksubi x Kanye sunglasses collection

By admin on May 8th, 2008

ksubikanye.jpg

It’s rare to see a hip-hop artist so readily accepted by the fashion elite like Kanye West has been. The only other contender is Andre 3000. However, Mr. West is on a level of his own when it comes to designer collaborations. In addition to his Air Yeezys, his clothing label Pastelle also has an upcoming sunglasses collection with Ksubi.

While they look great, they also look pretty similar to the American Apparel sunglasses Isabelle posted yesterday. As the amount of sunglass designs are limited at best, this usually wouldn’t be a problem. But seeing as the AA glasses are going for £30 and Ksubi’s own glasses are retailing at around £100, it’s a bit ridiculous to try and sell these for $2000. If price is no object to you, then you can get these from October.

Nicole Richie, Pharell and err…Mike Tyson attend the Bathing Ape Store Opening in L.A

By Will Reid on April 28th, 2008

bape.jpg

While Richard reported only two weeks ago of Tokyo’s willingness to queue for Bape goods, the label managed a slightly more A-list attendance for their LA store opening. Forget members of the public and imagine more the likes of Mike Tyson, Nicole Richie and Japanese fashion-darling artist Takashi Murakami. There was no M&S mob or Primark-passionates but only those able to afford the “diamond-encrusted A Bathing Ape Casio watch customized by Jacob the Jeweler” (*cough cough* Pharrell.) The store opened on Wednesday night in West Hollywood and looks set to only expand the brand beloved of fashion-followers everywhere.

Nike Air Yeezy

By admin on April 22nd, 2008

airyeezy.jpg

At the moment, Kanye West can seemingly do no wrong. Ignoring the downsides – and the urge to make an incredibly tasteless joke – things are going pretty well for Mr West. So, you can understand the palpable excitement around his new trainers called the Air Yeezy’s. But are they any good?

As much as I want to like them, I’d have to say no. It’s just too busy. The design seems to be going in several different directions, ending up with a trainer that looks like four trainers cut and pasted into one. That said, I do have a preference for clean and simple trainers, so maybe these will appeal to those who like their Dunks splattered in different colours.

Dior silver suit – Yay or Nay?

By admin on April 16th, 2008

diorsilversuit.jpgFirst things first – why are the pictures on Yoox.com of such poor quality? They make Asos.com’s pictures look like a Rankin masterpiece. I wouldn’t usually complain about these things, but when it comes to this Dior Homme silver suit, you need high quality pictures to make a decision.

I’m in two minds about this suit, hence the yay or nay question. The first problem is the functionality of this piece. Unless you were an musician you would have nowhere to wear it to. It’s too flashy for work and too sharp for a casual night out. While it seems to be aiming to be worn by Kanye West, its closer to a Graham Norton outfit.

On the other hand, who cares about functionality? If you’ve established yourself as a leftfield dresser, you could easily wear this to work without anyone batting an eyelid. Well, they probably would bat an eyelid, but only because they were dazzled by the brilliance of your suit.

So what is it to be? Yay or Nay? Like a Beijing Olympics participant, I’m remaining firmly on the fence.

Kanye and Reebok Collaboration

By admin on February 18th, 2008

ImageA Reebok collaboration with Kanye West seems to have slipped under the radar. Released as part of Jay-Z’s S. Carter collaboration, the range was released with no fanfare and not even a press release. It is only available from one store – Sportie LA in Los Angeles – and according to The Shoe Game, it was shipped to them out of the blue.
So why so cloak and dagger Reebok? Could it be because they are butters? Could it be because they bear (geddit? “bear”) more than a passing resemblance to Bathing Ape sneakers? Who knows. Suffice to say they’ll be hugely collectable for Kanye fanatics, but probably no-one else.

Kanye and Estelle: American Boy

By admin on February 5th, 2008

KanyeThe UK just doesn’t know what to do with it’s Black musical talent. Look at our Black British singers and you have a catalogue of perennial under-achievers: Beverly Knight, Jamelia, Craig David, Kele Le Roc, the list goes on. It’s as true in music as it is in fashion: we just don’t know how to cash in on our homegrown talent.

Estelle is one such artist who could be huge if she’d had the right backing and right promotion – have you heard the track she did with Ben Watt? Amazing. Her next single, American Boy, is probably make it or break it for her as the label’s pulled out the bucks to get Kanye West to lend his support on this cute little ditty about love across the cultural divide.
In the lyrics Kanye shows his appreciation for his dapper British cousins: ‘Dressed smart like a London Bloke. Before he speak his suit bespoke’.

Paris Catwalk Report: Dries Van Noten

By admin on January 21st, 2008

(Click on image for larger picture)

While we’ve sang the praises of Dries Van
Noten’s suits on this site for a while now, we’ve never really liked the rest
of their menswear range. The aim for Van Noten was to make a menswear range as
appealing as their suits. Could they pull this off?
