Kiehl’s sun protection: your summer sun essential kit

By cchapman on June 15th, 2009

As a typically pale Brit, sun protection is something I need to take seriously if I want to avoid the look referred to as ‘rosbif’ in certain parts of Europe. I use Kiehl’s Ultra Factor Moisturiser with an in-built SPF 15 as my daily. For more serious sun, I recently trialled Kiehl’s SPF 30 Face and Body Sunscreen Lotion. I had memories of Kiehl’s sun lotions being quite greasy, but this seems to be a new recipe. Buttery but easily absorbed, the SPF 30 is perfect for the first few days of your hols when burning is most likely, and advisable for your face, potentially, for your whole trip. I’d pair it with a spray such as Kiehl’s own SPF 25 spray.

As an after sun treatment, Palmer’s Cocoa Butter Formula can’t be beaten and leaves you smelling like a posh chocolate. Best stick to something lighter such as Clinique’s After Sun Rescue with Aloe for your face, though. As a final tip, if you’re only stealing away for a few days, try decanting your products into the handy travel-sized clear pots and bottles from Muji.

Seasonal hair disorder? Kiehl’s Creme with Silk Groom saves the day

By Colin Chapman on January 28th, 2009

Favoured by many stylists on location shoots for its miraculous ability to smooth the most wayward of locks into shape, Kiehl’s Creme with Silk Groom may be just the tonic your hair needs in this wintry weather.

Uniquely, it’s a creme, not wax, mud, putty or (heaven forbid) a gel and like the best products feels like something of quality from a more stylish past. Rub a little of the buttery, ultra-rich substance into your palm and then smooth through your hair from roots to tips. Silk Groom adds instant gloss and shine and has a wondrous ability to hold without leaving a sticky, matt residue. Just the thing for keeping that side-parting in place, it’s perfect when combined with one of the Kent brushes I posted about recently, enabling you to add a Cary Grant lustre to your weather-beaten do.

Available from the Kiehl’s store in Covent Garden and from leading department stores.

Kiehls and American Apparel make winter sun shopping a doddle

By Colin Chapman on December 7th, 2008

Off on a winter sun break? Picking up essentials for a trip at this time of year can be a shopping challenge as you try to locate that single dusty shelf of sun lotion amongst all the Christmas fare. With some clever choices, you can cut this down to a couple of visits.

First stop: Kielhls. Ultra Facial Moisturiser SPF15 doubles up as a daily moisturiser whilst helping to protect your face from any UV damage. Their ultra-light Hair Conditioner and Grooming Formula can be used as a leave-in that stops your hair drying out and keeps that side parting in place. Burts Bee’s lip balm (John Lewis) is an essential and lasts forever.

Meanwhile, American Apparel stock swimming shorts all year long so you don’t have to risk poolside shame in those baggy nylon trunks from the remainders bin. Pick up a light scarf and cardi for cooler evenings and you’re all set.

Kiehl’s Facial Fuel Energising Scrub

By admin on February 6th, 2008

KeihlsAs your skin gets older, it loses its ability to renew itself, so you sometimes need an exfoliator like Kiehl’s Energising Scrub to give you a bit of a hand scraping those layers of dead skin off your face.

Not only does this help the younger skin cells shine through, it also helps prevent the in-growing hairs you get from shaving- no small bonus if like me you’ve got curly hair and often have to excavate the little bastards with a pin. Too much detail? Let’s move on.

Kiehl’s Facial Fuel

By admin on January 15th, 2008

Kiehls_2So, over the next few weeks I will be road-testing some men’s grooming products for the pages of Brandish.
First up is Kiehl’s Facial Fuel moisturiser, which promises to “uplift dull, fatigued skin”. Vitamin C and E, chestnut extract and soy, will apparently reinvigorate your skin and help protect it from the ravages of modern life.
I know, it’s like “Good one Kiehl’s” but I have to say, I’m sold. I’ve been wearing it for a few weeks now and the number of people who have, unprompted, said I look fresh and young has reached double figures. In that there’s two of them.
Still two ain’t bad – and neither of them knew about this experiment. Plus I really really want to believe it.
What I can be sure of is that it smells nice – all citrussy. It’s a lotion, which is good for greasy skin (creams are too heavy boys!) and it’s absorbed through your pores like a rabbit down a hole. It also gives you a little tingly sensation, which is fun. I’m a total convert.
