Podolski encourages Lewandowski to join him at Arsenal

By Stefano on June 19th, 2013

There have been a few stories circulating over the last month or to that Arsenal’s German forward slash winger Lukas Podolski would be leaving The Emirates.

Well that rumour has gone quiet and Podolski has been encouraging other players to come and join him in north London. Cheif among these is Borussia Dortmund striker Robert Lewandowski.

Podolski told Polish newspaper Polska The Times, which is reported by the Star: “He would fit ideally into our team.”

In spite of the Gunners’ alleged £70 million kitty it would be something of a coup to land the lanky Polish goalscorer. He might not be heading for Bayern Munich but Real Madrid, Manchester United and Chelsea have also expressed an interest in singing him.

Also with the Higuain deal now looking very likely it seems a long shot that Arsene Wenger would invest in two marquee strikers. But then again you never know…

Arsene Wenger’s cunning plan for Lukas Podolski

By Stefano on April 15th, 2013

There have been a few rumours about Lukas Podolski recently that he might return to Germany or even try his luck in Serie A. The rumours were further fuelled by the fact that he has only started two games since the end of January.

Arsene Wenger was however quick to praise the German after his excellent cameo appearance against Norwich and insists that Podolski is part of Arsenal’s long term plans.

Wenger said

“He is a quality player and when he comes on you can see that straight away. You don’t get 100 caps by luck. Honestly he has a great attitude. He never moans, he never has a bad phase, he is always positive.”

Interestingly Wenger also revealed that he is working with Podolski, who has been playing mainly as a winger this season, as a main striker.

Wenger said

“I think he can play as a central striker as well. I work a lot with him as a central striker at the moment.”

It is an interesting admission and addresses something has baffled Arsenal fans all season. While Olivier Giroud has had a reasonable first term at The Emirates and has scored goals as well as created assists he is far from the clinical finisher that the Gunners fans are craving.

Conversely Podolski seems utterly clinical when he gets the chance and in spite of his limited appearances has managed to score nine goals this season – about one goal per three games.

The problem for Wenger is that Podolski is not really the type of striker who can hold the ball up and feed other players like Giroud. He also can’t rival Walcott, or many other winger/strikers for pace. His big strength appears to be cutting in from the wing and the unleashing very powerful shots. He is however far from being a traditional winger and quite often tends to get lost in games. His tracking back to help Gibbs and Monreal has also been questionable.

So I don’t think that Arsenal have got the best out of the German this season. Maybe next year we will see him playing more as an out and out striker and that is the role Wenger is grooming him for now.

The key for Wenger then is how do you feed the player? And I wonder if the Arsenal manager has a cunning plan for pairing Podolski with Jovetic? Podolski can yet be an Arsenal legend. But I think much depends on Wenger getting the best out of him.

Arsenal update: Podolski for Negredo? Battle for Koby Arthur

By Stefano on March 26th, 2013

There have been some mixed messages coming out of The Emirates in the last couple of weeks about the future of The Gunners’ striker Lukas Podolski.

The player, who hasn’t quite shown the form that his manager would have expected him to this season, is now rumoured to be a target for Italian giants Juventus.

Podolski has denied that he is going anywhere, but there is still a doubt over how and where he will fit into the Arsenal team next year especially if the Gunners fail to secure Champions League football.

One possible option to replace him is highlighted by the Metro this morning. Apparently Sevilla striker Alvaro Negredo is once again expressing his desire to play in the Premier League and that has alerted Arsene Wenger.

Negredo has had an excellent season scoring 15 goals in 26 league games and Wenger is rumoured to have sent scouts to keep tabs on the player.

As for the Premiership Negredo says

‘It is a league that I like and sooner or later I will play in it. President Jose Maria del Nido received some offers in January, but decided not to consider them. We’ll see what is going to happen in the future.’

Arsenal are looking for another striker to share the load with Giroud, but if Negredo does sign at least one news source is claiming that Podolski will be on his way.

Also this morning, Arsenal are said to be one of several clubs competing for the signature of exciting young Birmingham City talent Koby Arthur.

The 17-year-old striker is also being followed by Chelsea and Manchester City, only arrived in Britain from Ghana 12 months ago.

Arsenal update: Wilshere out, Podolski to Juve? And Raul Albiol targeted

By Stefano on March 12th, 2013

The big news today focuses on the upcoming Champions League game against Bayern on Wednesday. And what looked like just about possible for Arsenal, now looks like impossible. After a series of injuries dogged the German side, the Gunners now have to deal with the absence of their talismanic midfielder Jack Wilshere.

According to The Guardian Wilshere is still in Dubai nursing an ankle injury that he sustained in the game against Tottenham not training in the Allianz Arena.

Also not on the plane in Lukas Podoslki who also has injury problems. The Sun repotrs that the German forward is a target for both Juventus and Atletico Madrid.

Podoslki has netted thirteen goals for Arsenal this season and has shown flashes of brilliance, but has been criticised by his manager for at times not working hard enough.

The Sun reckons that £15 million could be enough to prise the player from Arsenal. Personally, I think that this is a non-starter if Arsenal qualify for the Champions League. However if Arsenal finish fifth – or even sixth – then the likeable German could be on his way.

Lastly a quick update on two key Arsenal targets. Firstly Arsenal are apparently keen on Real Madrid centre-half Raul Albiol. The player has been rather peripheral to Madrid in the last couple of seasons and has undoubted game reading and leadership qualities – which are sorely lacking at Arsenal.

Finally Arsenal target Stevan Jovetic has told the press that he won’t be sidetracked by questions about his future.

He told Sky Italia

“The transfer market? It has been talked about my contract and my future since the beginning of the season and I have to repeat myself: I just [think] about getting Fiorentina into Europe. I’m focused to score as many goals as possible and to make lots of assists for team-mates.

“In June we’ll see. I think only to the good of the team, of Florence and of our fans, the rest doesn’t interest me.”
