Ever wanted to dress like Don Draper and his dapper Madison Avenue chums? Well now you can – sort of. Banana Republic has just launched a range of Mad Men inspired clothing in the US for both men and women which was created by the series costume designer Janie Bryant. Given fashion’s current yen for all things black and white and stripey you might have expected a few more op art type items in the range. But nope, in keeping with BR’s image the range is classy, reasonably well priced and rather conservative. The women’s stuff with its geometric prints and loud stripes is loads better.
I do however like the blue suit, though would have liked an extra button, and it works well with that tie. Not too sure about some of the range but you can make your mind up.
Nice Fedora hat though.

Charles Tyrwhitt, men’s shirts specialists, have created this amazing infographic timeline to showcase some of the most iconic looks from the past year.
The timeline draws focuses on events such as film releases, television shows and key cultural happenings, to show just how they have influenced the way UK men have dressed over the past 12 months.
Important style landmarks include the centenary of Harris Tweed and the release of the film Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy, which both inspired classic cuts and heritage fabrics. 300 years of Royal Ascot makes an appearance for showcasing the best in morning dress year after year, and of course, Mad Men also features for inspiring 1960s style clothing over several seasons and for main man, Don Draper’s penchant for a sharp wool suit.

Mad Men, the AMC series shown in the UK on BBC Four starts again next Tuesday, 10 February. Set in 1960s New York, the sexy, and extremely stylish show follows the lives of the ruthlessly competitive men and women of Madison Avenue in the early era of advertising, where egos run high and comments are as sharp as the cut of their suits.
Returning here for its second series, the Golden Globe-awarded series is a visual extravaganza: whilst the ladies outfits undoubtedly often steal the show the men are superlatively tailored and the early-60s upscale interiors come right out of Wallpaper magazine.

It was bound to be a smart affair when Bloomingdale’s reopened their men’s floor in New York yesterday, and who better to have as party guests than the Mad Men themselves? I like the suits although I must say I’m a little disappointed with Rich Sommer’s choice of footwear… Is that a generic ‘long shoe’ I see?!

Mad Men has gone from a show known for substance to one known solely for its style. It’s a rare occasion when a show gets anointed like this and some writers got a little excited about it, even calling it the men’s Sex and the City (A ridiculous statement – everyone knows the man’s SATC is Entourage).
Sensing that another plain style feature on Mad Men would be overkill, Blackbook has asked Mad Men’s costume designer Janie Bryant what the characters would wear if they were around today. According to Bryant, Don Draper would wear Paul Smith, Roger Sterling would wear Paul Stuart and Pete Campbell would be wearing John Varvatos.

Reading through The Independent Online last night, I came across this article by Alice-Azania Jarvis on the art of dressing for work. As she states, “the thing about getting dressed for work – the thing that makes it so very difficult – is that work is definitely not about clothes. On the contrary: in the world of earnest employment, such frivolities are almost frowned upon.”
This isn’t true in the world of fashion, a Lacroix suit in blue silk can be just as suitable as a t-shirt and jeans but every job has areas where comfort and utility are a priority.

Newspapers and Magazines (including me) have all fallen in love with Mad Men’s sense of style. While no one (bar the BNP) wants any other values in the show to return, the fashion sense displayed by the men in that show is constantly returned to. And from watching the Apprentice, it’s clear to see why.

With guidebook and ability to say thank-you in tow, I was an innocent tourist. At least that was until I saw him from across the road. The letters emblazoned on his back in plush gold velvet shone with insecurity- “Vagina Lover.” Welcome to testosterone Euroflash-style.
It made me wonder about the power of sexuality through fashion. I’m not talking about the Azzedine Alaia flashing of flesh but the establishing of our own preference (and much more) through what we wear. A recent commentator on men.style claimed that the lowest thing a man could do was wear clothes that could be mistaken for women’s. Does that ban drainpipe denim, skinny scarves and thin knits (all within my wardrobe) from the outfits of the modern man. In my opinion a man of those opinions shouldn’t really be dabbling in the androgynous fashion industry. Read on for a Top Five of Euroflasher War Paint.

If you work in an office dominated by a smart casual dress code, you may find yourself actually wanting to wear a suit from time to time. For these people, Mad Men has become compulsive viewing. Not just because it’s a great show, but it harks back to a time when men actually wore all three pieces of their suit to work. Today’s average rucksack carrying, shirt and no tie wearing office worker could do with taking a few style tips from Don Draper (pictured left).
