Most people use the date the clocks go back as the official start of Spring but at Brandish we pay attention to altogether more stylish markers.
Luke Treadaway (right) turned up at the Empire Film Awards accompanied by his equally stylish twin brother Harry Treadaway. The actor who is tipped to appear in the 2010 version of Clash of the Titans was decked in a madras shirt and a charmingly cut grey suit. A bow tie and battered brown belt top off the look and add a touch of personality to the outfit. Take our poll after the jump and let us know what you think of the outfit, or tell us on our Facebook Wall.

Another inspiring gallery of new season clothing, this time from uber chic French label A.P.C. The made news recently with their Nike collaboration on the All Court tennis shoe and I’m sure we’ll be seeing lots more of the label thanks to our mutual love for all things madras.
Smart trenchcoats, soft velvet sweatshirts and sharp tailored suits make for an easygoing but stylish collection. The muted palette will coordinate easily with your wardrobe, and A.P.C quality means they’ll become a treasured favourite.

I bring you this fine picture of a young man in shorts and t-shirt not to taunt you but to remind you of warmer times.
His madras check shorts and paisley scarf is a clever match, perhaps a subtle reference to Indian origins of the two prints? The rolled sleeves on the white t-shirt add a bit of texture and provide a simple counterpoint to the busyness of the prints. Update a plaid shirt with a paisley scarf for winter take on the look. If you crave the original look then in the meantime keep marvelling at just how short the shorts are and remember, it’s only 8 months till June.

At the Arcadia Christmas press day yesterday I was reminded that flannel/check/plaid is going to be huge this autumn, both Burton and Topman had lumberjack-style shirts in their collections.
As much as we’ve been plugging madras on Brandish maybe it’s time to take a checkbreak for a month or two so you don’t get too bored of the trend.
Printed and patterned shirts look cool in the summer and the vintage Ono Hawaiian shirt from Rusty Zipper will see you into the cooler months teamed with a sharp blazer. the faded print is eyecatching without being too gaudy and will look great teamed with black or grey suit trousers or for a more casual look a pair of bright straight-leg jeans.

The Sartorialist isn’t convinced by shorts suits, but his images of sports jackets worn with shorts does indeed work well for the summer months. If you’re not sold on the idea of a shorts suit but want to look smart this summer see after the jump for my outfit pick which team madras with a pale chambray check and sturdy leather plimsolls. Clubmaster-style sunnies add a dose of bookish retro and the jacket finishes of the smart look.

If, for some bizarre reason, you haven’t hopped onto the Madras train yet we are still offering alternatives. Alternatives that don’t stray outside of the nautical look, but alternatives nonetheless.
We’ve featured a John Smedley version of this polo a while back but let’s face it – you’re not going to spend £122 on a polo shirt. This Full Circle polo is pretty much identical, I haven’t counted the stripes or anything, but I’d guess they’d be around the same amount. The FC one also has a pen pocket, something the Smedley one doesn’t even have. And to top it all off, it’s only £38.

After reading Dave Walker from Modculture’s comment on my tassel loafers post I had a look a the J.Simons website and what a treat it is! You really get a feel for his commitment to style and passion, and John himself has some really great stories from his youth:
“At 23, ambition started to creep in. We began copying American clothes, getting little old ladies to make them up for us. Next to the Hackney Empire we opened a shop and called it Clothesville. We’d take things like the Burberry raincoat and give it a twist, do it in corduroy.”
John went on to open The Ivy Shop in ’65 selling American clothing to young mods.

Bricolage are a band I saw last week as part of the excellent Twee as Fuck club night, and as much as I loved their set (click on the link to hear the brilliant ‘footsteps’) what immediately struck me was the awesomeness of their outfits. Their bassist sported an impressive madras shirt and I immediately thought of all you lovely Brandish readers. Not only that but the lead vocalist had a fine print shirt, and the guitarist had a very special Fair Isle cardie and a quiff so substantial you could have quite happily built a block of council flats on top of it. See after the jump for more images of the band.
