Nicola Formichetti’s blog is a haven for fashion-friendlies worldwide. Nicola recently featured images from his latest shoot with Slimane for Hedi Slimane.com. Latest Hairspiration: Crash Magazine’s ‘Pale Fountain’

By Will Reid on April 23rd, 2009

pf5.jpgIt looks as if, this summer, you will be mercilessly defined by your haircut. We’ve outlined a few of the trendiest, the possible need for back-up in a can, and now, I have a new look. This piece of major hairspiration comes in the form of the ‘Pale Fountain’ editorial in the latest issue of Crash magazine. I’m loving the almost bark-like quality of this model’s gorgeous copper locks and his overall effortless look means that he can play up his fashion with structural shapes, patterns and brash fabrics (check the velvet and plaid after the jump!) This follows on with the current trend for vampires, supernatural adolescents and dewy youths. So, next up should really be a post on how to find inner vampire. Oh, what a job!

See more from the editorial after the jump!

Yay or Nay? Mickey Boardman’s Gender-Bender Style

By Will Reid on April 20th, 2009

340x.jpgMickey Boardman is the infamous columnist at Paper magazine as well as a social butterfly and fashion extraordinaire. He is also the proud owner of a rather distinctive and intriguing look. Boardman blends paired down basics in block colours (Lacoste polo shirts, chinos, simple cardigans in luxury cashmere,) with extravagant costume jewellery and accessories. Chunky necklaces and lavish loops of gorgeous beads add a high-fashion touch to any simple look. But I worry it might raise a few eyebrows (and maybe a few fists) down at the local supermarket.

So what do you think- Yay or Nay?

GQ Style: the Brit publication goes All-American

By Colin Chapman on March 27th, 2009

090318-gq-style-issue-eight.aspx7741art_img1155.jpg
Issue 8 of GQ Style magazine is now on the stands. And from the Warhol-esque cover onwards it’s an All-American edition. Inside, Terry Richardson photographs (himself naturally) but also shiny, happy President Obama. We get to read about why New York is so buzzing right now when it comes to menswear – a view I’d really endorse.

There are also some serious analyses of American fashion classics from the button-down to the white T-shirt to the chino pant. To illustrate the chino piece, they use a cracking image of James Dean in East of Eden – an iconic image that seems obvious until you look at the details and see how prescient they were – the loose chino pant, pale sweater and white plimsolls look so very contemporary. Not to mention the hair – quite timely with height and volume becoming desirable again. So if you’re working on your quiff or want to swot up on the origins of your wardrobe basics go straight to the source via GQ Style’s America Now issue.

Brandish speaks to Fantastic Man’s Gert Jonkers

By admin on March 25th, 2009

fantastic man gert jonkers interview.jpg
Current issue, pictured above, out now.

We were lucky enough to speak to Gert Jonkers recently, who, along with Jop van Bennekom head up the team at Fantastic Man. It’s no secret that we’re big FM fans at Brandish, and one look at the magazine’s clever art direction, witty articles and embedded fashion editorials will show you why. Nowhere else can you read about Beryl Woodsware crockery and Tom Ford in the same magazine so it was a real privilege to speak to Jonkers, stay tuned for part two of this interview tomorrow.

Butt, your first magazine, took a very European view of sex, happily mixing explicit and intellectual content. You’ve kind of done the same thing with Fantastic Man, is that just yours and van Bennekom’s general approach to life?

Yes I guess so. We love reality, and the reality of life is that it’s sometimes quite mundane, sometimes quite thoughtful, sometimes quite exciting, sometimes quite complex, and sometimes quite plain. Why would a magazine have a completely different take on life?

Arena Magazine Closes Down

By Will Reid on March 5th, 2009

ArenaCoverDec460.jpgThe sad news yesterday was that Arena magazine has been closed down by publisher Bauer Media. The magazine has been running for 22 years and it has always been BOT (Bang On Trend) despite rapidly falling circulation figures in recent years.

The April issue of the magazine is due out next week and rumours are flying that this issue will be the last. Thankfully for our fashion flames, the magazine’s diffusion mag, (if you could call it that,) Arena Homme Plus, will continue on.

Check back to Brandish for a full review of the possible final issue next week!

US GQ March 2009- Justin Timberlake

By Will Reid on February 27th, 2009

The latest issue of American GQ looks set to be an exciting issue. While not the most fashion-forward of magazines, GQ manages to provide consistent style advice and it usually has at least a few good features.

In this issue, we have Justin Timberlake posing in a variety of stylish albeit bland looks and one of the most interesting looking features looks set to be their ‘Top 10 Most Stylish Men in America’ feature. Check back soon for the entire list with pics!

Male Models like Luke Worrall and Cole Mohr -Can We Ever Relate To Them?

By Will Reid on January 28th, 2009

“Rake-thin, 12 year-old-looking, alien-eyed lady-boys”
- this is how one of my friends describes the male models of today. While I don’t quite agree with his overly-harsh and rather sweeping statement, I have to admit that there are times where the men plastered over magazines and high-fashion ad campaigns just seem completely out-of-touch.

Barack Obama on the cover of February’s GQ

By admin on January 27th, 2009

barack obama GQ February09.jpg

By my calculations Barack Obama has now racked up his third GQ cover which isn’t bad going for someone who’s only just been inaugurated. This cements his official position as probably the most stylish president America has ever had. I wonder if we’ll get bored of the suit by summer though? Fingers crossed for some relaxed holiday pap snaps and the obligatory grey marl jogging in DC shots.

Love The Look: Artist Terrence Koh for United Bamboo

By Will Reid on January 22nd, 2009

terence koh for united bamboo 2.jpgThis week’s Love The Look features the wonderfully odd Terrence Koh (artist, fashionisto, sperm-collector, sculptor of crap and other bodily fluids.) Koh has just been made the face of hip label United Bamboo and the ad campaign for this season is an extravaganza of tinsel, blurry shots and classic tailoring with quirky details.

The image above and the rest of the campaign images after the jump will all debut in the Spring/ Summer issue of Fantastic Man.

By Will Reid on January 8th, 2009

brad-pitt-w-magazine-february-2009-04.jpgBrad Pitt, currently promoting his new film ‘The Curious Case of Benjamin Button,’ has nabbed the cover of this month’s W magazine. Brad stars in a photographic portfolio by Chuck Close and the black-and-white pics are basically Pitt at a few different angles. The covers boasts that this issue is ‘The A-List’ issue with “the superstar, the hottest directors, the coolest producers 7 the glitziest Hollywood memorials.”

Will the Real Henry Holland Please SuperPoke Us?

By Will Reid on December 16th, 2008

henry holland facebook photo.jpg

Grazia recently reported that Henry Holland has 662 friends on Facebook. However, upon closer inspection (and my quest to see if old Henners has uploaded his pic with our Catwalk Queen editor Gemma,) I found that there are two Henry Hollands on Facebook. And neither has 662 friends.

One of the Henries has 403 friends and the other has 582- how intriguing! Worst of all?- neither has Agyness Deyn as a Facebook mate. The Brandish team does love a fashion mystery!
