The Sunday Best’s One Leg at a Time: guaranteed fashion chortles

Hey! Don’t think for one minute that I’m agreeing about the lack of menswear at LFW and the general confusion at the amount of fashion weeks (ahem!), but you should go and take a look at the rest of Sunday Best‘s most recent ‘One Leg at a Time’ cartoon. It’s pure teh fashion lolz.
On an admin tip, Man About Town magazine has the best fashion events calendar in their latest issue. It’s so useful I might even get it tattoed on one of my bumcheeks in a Reverend Peter Mullen-style protest.

Ashley Olsen announces menswear range for the row

By admin on September 30th, 2008

ashley olsen row menswear.jpgThe Olsens are obviously very busy at the moment, their coffee table fashion tome ‘Influence’ is released at the end of October and now they’ve announced plans for a menswear range which could be available as soon as next Autumn.

This could be more of a solo venture however as Ashley has taken control over The Row until her sister Mary-Kate ‘has her personal life together’.

Either way, The Row has proven itself to be one of the more interesting -albeit expensive, celebrity ranges so it will be interesting to see what Ashley comes up with.

Comme des Garçons for H&M revealed

By admin on August 18th, 2008

Pictures of the forthcoming Comme des Garçons collection for H&M have been leaked to Fashionista and my intial verdict is thumbs up for the menswear. The women’s collection might be a little overly quirky (I’m reserving final opinion for when the range hits the shops) but the menswear is spot on, no pun intended. Rei Kawakubo has obviously retained CDG’s spirit in a surprisingly mainstream collection. From what I can see it’s a mix of quality tailoring with some well-placed, original flourishes like bias-cut fabrics and contrasting buttonholes.

Can I put in a request for polka dots to take the crown from stripes? We just need to find a successor to plaid for next spring. Answers on a postcard please.

Calvin Klein announces menswear move to New York

By admin on August 7th, 2008

calvin klein new york fashion week milan menswear.jpgCalvin Klein have decided to move their menswear catwalk collection to New York this season instead of Milan. The company will still present their collection to retailers in Milan this coming January but the show itself will take place on the ground floor of the company’s headquarters.

“As this is the year we have brought the Collection business back in house and will celebrate the company’s 40th anniversary, we thought this was an appropriate time to change things up a bit,” said Tom Murry, President & COO, Calvin Klein, Inc. He went on to add: “We see this as a great opportunity to support our U.S. business and retail partners and acknowledge our heritage in New York City.”

The move isn’t permanent but could be a sign that designers are getting a little concerned about retailers’ spending during the economic downturn.

Street style picks: smart silhouettes and the alternative to the tie

One of the few pictures from the Sartorialist’s London visit has surfaced and it’s a wonderful piece of British nostalgia. The tasselled loafers look great with the mustard top and oxblood bag, like the commenters I’m not so sure about the fit of the jeans but I think we can let him off!

Love The Look: Richard Chai No. 8

By Will Reid on July 3rd, 2008

richardchai.jpgThis new feature highlights the looks we love. Whether it be charity-shop mannequins or fashion week-shots, we will tell you which outfits are rocking our fashion-obsessed world. The first post of this feature looks at Richard Chai’s collection and the one look that I would literally kill for. (Okay, maybe not kill but beat up that glossy male model for sure.)

The whole collection had the feel of street-style and with increased ethnicity in the models used by different labels I think it is clear that the industry is beginning to move away from high-gloss and fake tans. Why go for prissy Versace-boy when you can be an adventurous Dunhill-man?

Check out those high-tops and that two-tone shirt and I doubt you will be able to resist the charm of a young designer only in his second season. I would say ‘out with the old’ but then again I believe it unnecessary to have yet another look at Yohji Yamamoto’s ghost model.

John Galliano Paris Menswear collections S/S 09

By admin on July 2nd, 2008

john galliano menswear spring summer paris 09.jpg
When most of the fashion world is retreating to the relative safety of preppy, classic looks Galliano’s Paris menswear show last week was a riot of colour and you could tell he certainly wasn’t thinking of the credit crunch.
Drinks cans, colourful afros and shimmering lipcolours accompanied the fanciful clothes which included day-glo sporrans, newsprint tailored blazers and t-shirt featuring pop art images of Galliano himself. See after the jump for backstage images from the collection.

WISHLIST: Dries Van Noten Transparent Shirt

By Will Reid on July 2nd, 2008

driesvannotenshirt.jpgFor those of you who haven’t watched Amy Winehouse’s performance at Nelson Mandela’s 90th Birthday, she does this thing where she pulls on her skirt while she sings. She looks to me a victim of ‘Summer Spirit.’

You know what I mean- when all you want to wear are your swimshorts and the thought of a buttoned up shirt and trousers makes you itch. Don’t worry Amy, I have found the answer to this shared problem and it comes in the form of Dries Van Noten’s transparent shirt. Seen in his current SS09 show, this shirt is striped and looks to be made of a silk-like material. It looks cool (in both the urban dictionary and weather sense) and with that white collar and contrast-stripe collar and cuff detail, is a perfect summer piece.

Brandish Poll- ‘Luke + Kelly 4 Ever?’

By Will Reid on June 30th, 2008

lukeandkelly.jpgI’m officially torn- Luke Worrall, the male-supermodel and It-boy of the London fashion scene has been spotted (now that’s an understatement) with Kelly Osbourne. My question is whether she is a suitable match for a rising fashion star. I’m personally not a fan but then I’m a fashion writer who is rather over-protective when it comes to sartorial stars. That’s right Tom Cruise- don’t even try to get near our Aggy!

The couple were spotted at the ‘Night of Tease’ fundraiser at the Cafe de Paris on the 15th of May and have since been seen in more cute outfits and even cuter embraces. What do you think? Does ‘Worrelly‘ have a future or are we agreed that Ms. Osbourne and Mr. Worrall are as bad a match as Amy Winehouse and ‘Free Nelson Mandela?’ Poll after the jump.

Paris Menswear shows see first ghost model at Yohji Yamamoto

By admin on June 27th, 2008

The New York Times are going gaga for Sergio Lo Re, who made an appearance at the Vivienne Westwood show this week.

His looks are a heady mix of chubby Italian kid and sleazy lothario which isn’t too much of a hit with the rest of the fashion team but I think he’s cute.

Lo Re might be a little unconventional looking, but Yohji Yamamoto took things a step further in Paris yesterday by picking a model who is a bona fide ghost. Admittedly close up (click on the thumbnail) he doesn’t look that ghostly but from far away he is definitely a member of the undead.

Wedges for men at Fendi’s Milan Fashion Week show

By admin on June 27th, 2008

man wedge medge fendi milan menswear.jpgI spend an inordinate amount of time spying the soles of men’s shoes to see if they have hidden lifts in the sole but bearing in mind there aren’t many Karl Lagerfelds in Tooting I’m usually forced to conjure them up using the powers of my overactive imagination.

Now that Fendi have debuted the wedge on the Milan catwalks the delicate isssue of heel height might come out into the open.

All we need to do now is come up with a patronising name for them, somehow combining the word man with the word wedge. Medge it is then.

GFW street style: tasselled loafers and neutrals

By admin on June 9th, 2008

I’ve been literally running around Earl’s Court trying to get pictures of the best-dressed men at GFW for you.

When I spied Roberto Alessandro’s tasselled loafers I knew I had to include him in our street style selection. Roberto is 21 and a 1st year Fashion Styling student at Salford. The aforementioned loafers come from Brick Lane and together with the polo shirt and OTT gold chain makes for a great look that doesn’t take itself too seriously.

Velvet Revolver’s Matt Sorum opens LA boutique.

By admin on May 16th, 2008

Over at My Chemical Toilet Stuart is giving us a blow-by-blow account of the Sorum Noce opening in his own inimitable style:

matt_sorum.gifMatt Sorum, drummer of Velvet Revolver, has launched his very own fashion label with a man called Max Noce. No, I don’t know how you’re supposed to pronounce Noce. Their label is called… wait for it…

SORUM NOCE

If any “branding” expert got paid dollar dollar bill y’all for thinking up that monicker, I may just poo myself.

Anyway, Matt and Max – or MaxMatt – aim to provide gennelmen with “an elegant, innovative line of rock-inspired couture”. Their boutique in Los Angeles has just opened, so let’s have a look at it, shall we?

What is your favourite high street store?

By admin on April 23rd, 2008

oxford street london high street.jpgIt’s well known that while the UK high street is second to none for women it’s still lagging behind for menswear. Things have improved recently but there is still a blokey pub-lad feel at some of the chains.

Draper’s recently went to Oxford Street to rate the stores for their High Street Hit or Miss feature visiting everywhere from Ted Baker and Reiss to the slightly dodgy Officers Club. What is your favourite high street store? Take our poll and let us know!
