Brian Eno models for Alfred Dunhill as part of 2013 “Voice” campaign

Brian Eno is keeping himself busy at the moment. Joining mountaineer Geordie Stewart and war photographer Don McCullin in this year’s campaign, and …

The most under-rated British Indie bands of the 90s – Marion, Rialto and more

I have a theory that it takes a decade or two before we can properly appreciate the popular culture from an earlier decade. Much of what we love about the 60s, from The Beatles to Peter Blake, was hideously unfashionable in the 70s and didn’t really return to the mainstream until the mid 90s. Similarly the shoulder pads and wonky keyboard bands of the 80s were held in high disdain for decades and it wasn’t until …

Yoko Ono’s John Lennon inspired menswear debut looks like a Nathan Barley joke

We’re not sure what we should have expected from Yoko Ono’s debut menswear collection for Opening Ceremony, revealed today. But had we thought about it logically, it’d probably have been something as barmy as what she’s indeed delivered. Featuring neon pink shades, arse-exposing mesh trousers and the sort of abstract cock-and-balls motif that’d make Alan Partridge blush, it’s like …

Menswear’s Nuisance album finally goes platinum – so here’s why you should give it another listen

They were written off as the Boyzone of Britpop – a band whose image and not music gave them a spot on Top Of The Pops even before their debut single had troubled the charts. However there was always more to Menswear than their angular cheekbones and fancy threads. And I am not the only person who thinks so. For …

Lacoste bought up by Swiss Maus Freres Group

Sportswear brand Lacoste have been bought out by the Maus Freres Group. The Swiss investors already held a 35% stake in the brand, and are now majority holders by buying up an additional 30.3% stake. The move values the French fashion line at somewhere between  1.0 billion and 1.25 billion euros ($1.29-$1.62 billion). The sale comes courtesy of a group …

POLL: Men’s braces – Yay or Nay?

I like a good belt, me. From a thin braided offering to a chunky biker buckle, they’re my proffered gravity-defying trouser accessory. But as the years pile up, and the pounds pile on, my paunch is finding itself more and more at odds with my waistline adornments. So what are my other options? I’d rather walk about in my underpants than wear …

Nice and simple: Folk AW09 preview at End Clothing

folkcollection.jpg

Two introductions today, just in time for lunch time browsing – a look ahead to Folk’s AW09 collection and a lovely site to preview the upcoming goodies. The Folk brand can always be relied upon to provide simple, no fuss clothing and accessories with a great use of colour. And AW09 looks like being no exception to the rule. Meanwhile, newly-discovered menswear store End Clothing is a revelation. Simple, clean navigation and a fantastic range of menswear on the casual-sportswear-outdoor-streetwear trajectory, I’ve found this site a pleasure to browse.

Filippa K Pre Fall 09

The delicate interplay between the different colours in the Filippa K pre-Fall collection really make it. A brick shirt, cornflower trousers and a pale dove bow tie, the colours are bright but slightly faded suggesting that high summer haze and intense heat. We particularly love the pleated trousers, rolled up they make looking smart a doddle.

Giles Deacon’s second range for New Look hits stores on the 15th

giles deacon new look menswear 2009.jpg

Giles Deacon for New Look, one of the few designer X high street collaborations for men returns next week with another collection, featuring a selection of shirts, t-shirts, jeans and knits.

We like that the New Look collections are a chance to see Deacon’s lighter take on fashion with witty t-shirt prints and bright colours. Hopefully we’ll see see pieces which push boundaries a little more in future collections but as always it’s baby steps for menswear.

Alexander McQueen Menswear SS 10

Alexander McQueen‘s menswear collections get more and more interesting by the season. This latest show was a clear departure in mood from his last show, ‘The Queensberry Rules’.

There was still a menacing undercurrent, with vibes of tortured artist coming through, but the overall atmosphere was that of a more feminine creativity. McQueen’s traditional rustic tailoring the look reminded me of some of the Italian workmen that the Sartorialist sometimes snaps.

Paris Menswear: Lanvin SS10 Catwalk Show

You can rely on Alber Elbaz and Lucas Ossendrijver to deliver a great collection and they did. This collection for Lanvin was typically elegant affair, with the très chic suits and kimono-style jackets. Irreverent touches like trousers and suits made from tie silk reinforce Elbaz’s gentle sense of humour and sandals worn with socks gave a geeky twist to the look.

Yves Saint Laurent Menswear SS10

We’re still playing post-Glastonbury catchup with all the menswear shows, but the collections have set the cogs in the cranium a-whirring. First up is YSL‘s collection, which features the director, Samuel Benchetrit’s son lazing around a hotel room Nouvelle Vague style. The clothes themselves seem to be a mix of high-low tailoring and rock chic. Looking forward to seeing this in more detail.

Milan Prada Men’s SS10 Catwalk Show

Working within the confines of the grey suit Miuccia Prada played around with masculine conventions. Slashed shorts and sleeves nodded to a violent outburst against formalwear. Shoulders are very much the focus, even without jackets they were shown off in tank tops and sleeveless cardigans. Textured tops and greyscale prints conveyed the feel of newsprint.
