New label obsession: Burkman Brothers

By cchapman on July 1st, 2009

13.jpgRegular readers will know I have a thing for American, brands like Rugby Ralph Lauren and BBlessing as well as Stateside blogs such as Mister Mort and Secret Forts. So it’s with great pleasure that I (hopefully) introduce to you Burkman Brothers. Stumbling across them on the blogosphere it seems that New York has been alight with talk of them this year. Super-handsome, real life brothers, Doug and Ben create American clothing with genuine love of detail and finish – their madras fabrics for example are all woven in South India. With a history that includes designing for Gap this isn’t edgy stuff but the attention to detail and consistent aesthetic are really refreshing. Check out the gorgeous current Spring/Summer collection lookbook here – great use of colour and the Indian setting is a perfect foil.

The label is apparently available from Liberty in the UK but at the time of writing there is no sign. Let’s be hopeful that a mass of BB stock is on its way for AW09.

Boater! The straw hat of choice for summer

By Colin Chapman on May 17th, 2009

Thumbnail image for 6a010535d07789970c01156f15e53b970c-800wi.jpgAs fashion continues to trawl the Americana back catalogue, the boater pops up as a summer hat option. You’ll need bags of attitude to carry it off as well as this uber-Lower East Side hipster (it’s photographer Dash Snow) but hell, you can try.

ASOS have the perfect hat (by B-Store) in black. It’s a pricey £175 but the rest of your outfit can be dirt basic (check Mr Snow’s Canal Street leather holster, white tee and black jeans combo) or keep an eye on ladies’ boater options on the high street. ASOS also have a bargain, natural boater with coloured, striped ribbon. It’s more likely you’ll face Colonel Sanders quips but is possibly a better option if you’re pale and interesting and working the Anglo take on the boater hat style. Just lay off the striped blazer to avoid period costume.

Stately homo: time for some eccentric grandad chic

By Colin Chapman on May 13th, 2009

grandad_chic.jpgHaving lost not inconsiderable time exploring in blogworld this morning, if there’s one thing I’ve learnt – thanks to Mister Mort – it’s that old guys have the best style, and young guys wearing old guy style have all the best fun. Here’s a fun collection of items to give you that gentlemanly, eccentric beyond your years appeal.

You may think I’m a little crazy in recommending tweed at this time of year, but the tweed is in the detail here and a tie shouldn’t make you sweat.
