A Waste of Money or An Investment Piece? Dr. Martens 1461 Shoe

By Will Reid on March 11th, 2009

drmartens1.jpgLast week I was in search for a pair of school shoes. Beginning with classic brogues, I sampled a pair of black loafers and sneakily tried on a pair of Paul Smith Jermyns (with glorious plum laces) before ending up with a pair of not-so-exciting pointed Topman lace-ups. Inspired by this bout of school-shoe shopping I ventured onto Oki-Ni and came across their Doc Martens. Floral. Striped. Coloured. Neon. But then I came across their 1461 shoe and couldn’t believe what I was seeing.

A shoe, in simple black leather, that was more than double the price but half as nice as many of the shoes I had seen the previous day. These Dr. Martens did not look worth their £70 price tag, especially in comparison to my £35 Topman shoes. Granted, the Dr. Martens are probably better quality and might last longer but, are they even that easy on the eye? I, for one, wouldn’t want to be seen in them.

Fashion is fickle, even in times of economic recession. See after the jump for my Top 5 Best on a Budget Smart Shoes.

Frankenstein’s Nike

By Jonathan Smith on December 30th, 2008

The Nike Mad Jibe is the Frankenstein’s monster of the Nike collection, part boat shoe and part Dunk- oddly it works. Soon to be available in the best Nike colourway, grey and neon yellow, though if neon is a bit garish for you then it’s easy enough to replace the laces and *bam* you’ve got a deck shoe with the comfort of a Dunk.

Back to the 90′s…

By Jonathan Smith on December 16th, 2008

I’ve always been of the opinion that my shoes lack the neon effect of a porn shop window, which is why I nearly shit a brick when I saw this video. These light up neon laces are the focus point of a pair of Solebox x Puma collaborative sneakers, which will hopefully be released soon- perhaps coming a little late for New Rave however there are probably a few hangers on out there, after all American Apparel is still doing business…

Gallery: Giles Deacon’s first menswear collection for New Look

By admin on November 21st, 2008

Giles Deacon‘s first ever menswear collection hit the shops yesterday, the 25-piece collection is made up of wearable wardrobe basics. T-shirts, jeans, jackets and shirts are all given the Giles touch with neon detailing and gold chains. This is good news for men’s fashion as it seems that every designer/high street collab now has a menswear range, and not a minute too soon.
We’ve picked out a selection from the collection which is available to buy in New Look stores or online. I think my favourite piece is the grey striped shirt with coral-lined cuffs, what’s yours?

Grey and neon Swear lace-ups from Office

By admin on May 15th, 2008

office swear neon lace up.jpgGrey and neon is a pretty good colour combination, I like the way grey geeks up the neon a bit to remove the nu-rave connotations.
There’s even more of a contrast going on here with these shoes from Office (£34.99) as the neon clashes nicely with the old man stylings going on. I love it, it’s like pops from down the road got happy with a highlighter after a few too many G+Ts.

Durkl: Technicolor Team

By admin on December 27th, 2007

Durkl are a label who aren’t afraid of colour. Their collections come in a palette you could only call ‘acid’, or rather ‘aceeeeeed!’. T-shirts, caps and jeans come in any shade you like, so long as its neon.
The collection is quite Nu Rave-y but with a healthy dose of boyish rebellion thrown in: “You’ve got to fight. For your right. To parrrrr-ty” was going round my head as I viewed the collection.
One of their prints for the current season is this crooked rain print which comes in several different colourways, as amply illustrated by the above model. I like it.
Shop the collection on-line here.

Top Five: Summer brights

By ShinyMedia on April 30th, 2007

Neon brights are in, but you don’t have to make like a London clubkid and wear purple harem pants with orange juice cartons around your neck (methinks it’s time for a UK version of Blue States Lose). Topman’s retro cut short-sleeved shirt (£25) would look great with turned up dark denim jeans for a rockabilly look. Another tack is to take the sporty look with neons, like with this yellow Souvenirs & Gallery anorak (£42) or 55DSL’s messenger bag (£16), which looks like the colours of a Twister ice lolly. Another one from Topman, this cute blue belt (£10) is just the thing to add a touch of panache to an outfit.  Finally, New Balance’s yellow suede trainers (£51) add a flash of colour which can’t be beaten.
