New York Fashion Week Unconditional A/W 2008-9

By Catwalk Queen on February 19th, 2009

More ankle boots from Unconditional, can we make them a menswear staple for autumn?

Sportswear influences made bondage trousers and knitwear look current while neatly avoiding cliché. Tailoring and asymmetric coats added to the simple, classy, look while laidback jersey pieces perfectly capture a youthful stylishness.

New York Fashion Week: Tim Hamilton A/W 2008-9

By Catwalk Queen on February 19th, 2009

Effortlessly cool is not really a phrase you want to bandy about recklessly but Tim Hamilton’s show had cool in spades.

Featuring everything a man could want from a wardrobe, neat tailoring teamed up with quirks like harem jogging bottoms (better than they sound!), jackets with layered panels and zip up ankle boots resulting in a collection that was by no means unadventurous but eminently wearable.

New York Fashion Week: Marc by Marc Jacobs menswear

By admin on February 18th, 2009

Piece by piece Marc by Marc Jacobs‘ menswear was nothing spectacularly new but the way he put it together gave it a fresh feel.

The cobbled together chic was reminiscent of his standout womenswear show last season, proving Will’s point that women’s trends often trickle down into menswear a season or two later. Offering up a vision of the male as strong, wholesome with a slight geeky side is always going to go down a treat, and his mastery with fabrics and colours stops this medley from becoming a jumble sale.

Yay Or Nay: Denim Deity?

By Will Reid on September 30th, 2008

Denim has been rife on the catwalks of this season with many big-name designers putting out denim tuxedos, denim waistcoats and even denim shirts (okay, that’s not too odd.) I, myself, have a bit of a love/hate relationship with this timeless fabric and I think it’s safe to say I’ve explored it thoroughly!

Love the Look: Waris Alhuwalia at Ben Cho

I have a bit of an obsession with Waris Ahluwalia, the jewellery designer, actor and sometime Ben Cho collaborator.
Café Mode’s Géraldine snapped him looking amazingly turned out for the Ben Cho show in New York recently. It’s a happy coincidence but the dark grey background adds to the tonal mix of his outfit. I love the dun brown suit, and the contrast with the delicate floral pocket square. Research has shown that if you stare at a picture of a tree for long enough it lowers your heart rate, but I think in this instance you could happily substitute tree for Waris Ahluwalia.

WISHLIST: A Closet Session with à la Fake Karl

By Will Reid on September 10th, 2008

anna wintour and karl lagerfeld.jpg

Now this looks like my kind of party!

I feel like a horrible, disgusting sorry excuse for a fashion follower. Why am I bound by such emotional wounds? Why do I feel so sick-minded and wrong?

Answer: I want an invitation to Fake Karl’s closet. Yes, it’s true! I, Will Reid, couldn’t think of anything this week that could be desired more than a day of hanging upside down with Anna and Karl sipping our “respective drinks.”

And don’t even tell me you don’t want to too. There’s even a Yohji Yamamoto-shaped hole in the window!

Marc Jacobs celebustats: Kanye West, Jay Z, Jefferson Hack and Luke Worrall

By admin on September 9th, 2008

luke worrall jefferson hack kanye west jay z.jpgMarc Jacobs‘ shows are always a star-studded affair and this latest one was no exception. Marvel at Kanye West‘s grey suit and camel deck shoes, (why didn’t Jay-Z make a similar effort?!), wonder at Jefferson Hack’s eternal youth, coo over Luke Worrall who looks the epitome of a little boy lost and most importantly, click image to enlarge.

Thom Browne joins the Circus in New York

By admin on February 8th, 2008

Thombrowne

Thom Browne kinda annoys me. I read an interview with him where he seemed like an arrogant berk, coming off like he thought he was the saviour of fashion and the only one who’s ever thought of playing with proportions. Having said that, his AW08 show does exactly what I’ve been moaning that other designers showing in New York don’t do – he takes risks and doesn’t just play to the crowds. You can’t win with me.

New York Fashion Week Catwalk Report: Duckie Brown

By admin on February 5th, 2008

Duckiebrown

Duckie Brown, if you’ve not heard of them, are a Canadian and Brit design duo who are the toast of New York menswear. Their fans include Jude Law, Adrien Brody, Black Eyed Peas and Ashton Kutcher and they were also featured in the very excellent ‘New York Fashion Now’ exhibition at the V&A.  Typically a very colourful and playful label, the collection which they showed in New York at the week-end was disappointingly sombre, (although the pics on their MySpace do make it look much more exciting).

New York Fashion Week Catwalk Report: Rag & Bone

By admin on February 4th, 2008

Ragbone

So New York Fashion Week started this weekend. I think it’s safe to say New York fashion is the most commercial and least trend-led of the major fashion weeks, especially when it comes to menswear. The US has always been more sportswear focussed than its European counterparts, and as the home of capitalism, the US fashion industry is very market-led. All of which means that US designers tend to play it very safe in my opinion and the collections often lack any bite. But then that’s why we have London fashion week: to give us outrageous avant-garde threads that no-one will buy.
