Brandish Watch: ‘California Teens’ by Hedi Slimane and Nicola Formichetti

By Will Reid on May 14th, 2009

Nicola Formichetti’s blog is a haven for fashion-friendlies worldwide. From Japanese karaoke to Lady Gaga in the dressing room via iD and plenty of Hedi Slimane, this blog is always full of intimate shots and fashion-star exclusives. Nicola recently featured images from his latest shoot with Slimane for Hedi Slimane.com. The shoot, entitled ‘California Teens,’ includes only two models but shows a huge variety of sets and looks including dog heads with Swarovski eyes and Rodarte worn as a balaclava.

See the shoot in this gallery below!

Brandish Inspiration: Prospective Dazed & Confused ‘British Youth’ Issue

By Will Reid on December 15th, 2008

dazed1.jpgFor their January issue, Dazed & Confused asked the youth of Britain to design a Dazed magazine cover based on a set of images Hedi Slimane photographed for the magazine. The issue came out last Thursday and the two black and white covers that were selected for the final copy (pictured after the jump) are very effective but, in my opinion, the image above (by ‘Jamie’) would have made a real statement and epitomised the revolutionary way of British youth today.

Love The Look: Nicola Formichetti’s Friends Out In London

By Will Reid on December 9th, 2008

Nicola Formichetti, the fashion extraordinaire and creative director of Dazed & Confused, writes an awesome blog which he manages to update almost three times a week. With pictures from his various trips, nights out, karaoke parties and Tokyo fashion-fests, the blog is a treasure trove of great images and this is no different. The pic was only put up yesterday morning and it shows some of Nicola’s friends posing on a night out in London. I love the leopard-print beanie of the fashionisto on the left and the fur collar of the guy on the right looks like a necessary luxury for the altogether depressing Baltic temperatures we have been feeling in recent times.

Another Man A/W 2008- Viggo Mortensen, John Galliano, Steve McQueen, Lucien Freud and Christopher Bailey!

By Will Reid on October 9th, 2008

AnotherManFall-Winter20082009ViggoM-1.jpgThe latest issue of Another Man reads like a Who’s Who of not only the fashion industry but the world of art, music and acting. Jam-packed with features on Lucien Freud, a list of ‘Style Icon’ profiles scribed by the artistic elite and tribute stories to John Galliano (a designer who haunts my dreams,) and Martin Margiela (a designer who borders on haunting my nightmares.)

Dazed Digital tells us that the issue provides an “insight into the world of fashion with work from the world’s leading photographers and stylists including Nicola Formichetti, Norbert Schoerner, Alister Mackie, Gareth McConnell, David Armstrong, Tyler Udall, Serge Leblon, Bryan McMahon, Sandra Freij, Paul Wetherell, Mattias Karlsson, Lina Scheynius.”

First Day Fetish… Luke Worrall’s Heels

By Will Reid on July 14th, 2008

The Farlex Free Dictionary decrees that Monday is “the second day of the week, and the first day of the working week.” That latter part means that for most of us, it is a ridiculously depressing day of hellish tasks and grumpy peers.

So why not add a dash of excitement with these pictures from the August 2008 issue of Dazed & Confused. From the title editorial, itself entitled ‘Dark Magic,’ I present to you Luke Worrall in high heels and other pieces of women’s clothing.

Read on for all the pics.

WISHLIST: Uniqlo UT by Nicola Formichetti

By Will Reid on April 29th, 2008

uniqlonicola.jpgA few weeks ago I spotted something on Nicola Formichetti’s blog but thought it was too vague (being only a set of pictures) and decided not to post. Well now I wish I had because as part of the new Uniqlo UT T-Shirt Collection, campaign stylist Nicola Formichetti has actually designed a few pieces. My favourite is the one above, printed with a copy of Luke Worrall from the Dazed & Confused ‘Black and White’ cover of August 2007. Sharp, edgy and extremely wearable in it’s monochrome entirety, this tee would be a great buy.

Dazed & Confused: Kevin May 2008

By Will Reid on April 11th, 2008

dazed.JPGWhat do you get when you combine a fashion director, a fairly underground-style publication, techno dancers and new fashion? No, not a waft of nostalgia (at least I should hope not) and not a drug-fuelled roller-disco but the latest Dazed & Confused cover.

This is big not only because Dazed has decided to give a male model its cover but also because this male model is an unknown. In fact according to the notorious fashion grapevine, Kevin is not a model at all but a dancer caught up in “Tecktonick” (a dance supposedly all the rage in France!)

Read on for the full editorial and more on the issue.

Fazed & Amused!-Joaquin Phoenix, January 2008

By ShinyMedia on December 14th, 2007

JoaquindazedcoverFrom our guest blogger intern Will:

Dark, dramatic and
ever-so slightly threatening, this month’s Dazed & Confused cover is sure
to stand out on the shelves. Joaquin Phoenix plays cover model and with the
creative Midas-touch of new creative director Nicola Formichetti, the New Year
looks set to start with a fashion-friendly bang. Inside, we have a photographic
portfolio featuring work by Terry Richardson, Oliviero Toscani and others as well as an editorial shot by Matt
Irwin. The theme of both is ‘Nostalgia,’ a trend echoed across the magazine
rack at the moment and seen in W magazine’s new Hilary Swank cover which, with
its paper-thin slip dress and grunge-like simplicity, is 90s-inspired.
