Skyfall suffers Oscar nominations “Best Picture” snub in favour of Django Unchained and Lincoln

By Gerald Lynch on January 10th, 2013

It seems both critical acclaim and box office record breaking isn’t enough to get a Best Picture Oscar nomination these days, as Skyfall, the 23rd James Bond film released in the series’ 50th anniversary year failed to be considered alongside the year’s best films.

This morning’s announcement of the 85th Academy Awards nominations instead saw Armour, Argo, Beasts of the Southern Wild, Django Unchained, Les Misérables, Life of Pi, Lincoln, Silver Linings Playbook and Zero Dark Thirty all going head to head for the most coveted prize in Hollywood.

Skyfall did manage to secure a few nominations in some of the smaller categories however, with Adele’s “Skyfall” track getting an obvious nod for Best Original Song, as well as nominations in the Original Score, Cinematography, Sound Editing and Sound Mixing areas.

It’s a shame – Bond was back in a superb thriller that, while not particularly high-brow, delighted audiences and delivered one of the most exciting, stylish and tasteful action films in recent years.

Softening the blow slightly, the Oscar ceremony will include a segment celebrating 007′s half-century anniversary.

“We are very happy to include a special sequence on our show saluting the Bond films on their 50th birthday,” said the producers of the Oscars show, Craig Zadan and Neil Meron.

The full list of nominees across all categories can be found here.

Dev Patel in Burberry at the Academy Awards 2009.jpg

Sean Penn and Kate Winslet both took home statuettes at last night’s Academy Awards but it seems that Burberry was the real winner. They dressed a number of celebs including Slumdog Millionaire star Dev Patel (pictured above with Freida Pinto) and ceremony host Ryan Seacrest. Jump through to see Hugh Jackman and Dominic Cooper doing Burberry, Oscars-style.

L’Uomo Vogue February 2008- Casey Affleck

By Will Reid on March 4th, 2008

Lumo1When I woke up this morning and sat down at my screen, I was confronted with the unsettlingly sad news of Tim leaving (is that fair for someone to have to deal with at such a vulnerable time of the day? – okay, it was 11:30.) As a result I was thrown into a mental retrospective of my short time at Brandish. The posts, the e-mails, the endless questions (sorry Isabelle!) and particularly the instance in which Tim edited a photo for me and sent it back to my grease-stained, holiday-rented and ancient computer even though I was a) in Tenerife and b) a complete stranger to him (Thanks Tim.) As part of this smile-inducing recall, I thought of one of my posts on L’Uomo Vogue. So later, when I was ‘surfing the web’ and found that Casey Affleck is on their latest ‘Hollywood Issue,’ I thought it was worth a post.

This looks amazing and with stars from Javier Bardem to Quentin Tarantino, you just have to look after the jump for more information and pics.

Oscar Fashion- Javier Bardem

By Will Reid on February 29th, 2008

06mIn previous years, the Oscars were associated with daring stars pushing fashion’s limits; Cher in Bob Mackie, Jack Nicholson in a beret, Sharon Stone in her husband’s shirt tucked into Vera Wang. However, to the displeasure of writers, editors and readers everywhere, the Oscars now represent a plucked image and dull figments of a mediocre stylist’s imagination. Talking about the lack of fashion daredevils at this year’s Oscars, John Waters in WWD said that "Stylists have ruined everything…Nobody wants to be Björk. I love Björk. We need Björk."

But fear not, this year it was the men who had the sartorial X-factor. Case in question- Javier Bardem in Prada (I have my suspicions that his outfit played a part in his Best Actor win.) Back during fashion season, we at Brandish, along with the rest of the industry, ridiculed Prada’s menswear show and it’s content of mini-skirts and "boy-kinis." Soon after, I assured you that the Prada collection would find a way of being wearable. Oh how nice it feels to be right for once.

Brits 2008 Fashion: Arctic Monkeys

By Will Reid on February 25th, 2008

Image5This year’s Brit Awards saw a pretty varied spectrum of red carpet-dressing. The men either went for smart-casual monochrome (Take That) with accessories such as elaborate ties and glittery belts or glorious brights (look out for my other post on Mark Ronson and Mika.) But one group of well-dressed individuals stood out.

The Arctic Monkeys proved to be the attention-grabbing act of the night, whether it included their drunken thank-you speech (or slur,) winning the Best Group of the Year or their spectacular look. The band went for country costumes with full-on tweed and breeches. Admittedly you couldn’t wear it all the time but you have to admit that they do look rather enviously carefree and offensively upper class to the point of clay-pigeon cool.  This year’s Brits were a fabulous reminder of why  the world loves the UK. Some may have found the awards to be an alcohol-fuelled waste of time but at least we saw some genuine smiles and bright-eyes (more standard surprise than surgeon’s snip.) Deep breath- and onto the Oscars.
