20 Most Iconic Rock ‘n’ Roll Hairstyles

By Gerald Lynch on June 29th, 2012

Rock ‘n’ roll can be broken down as follows: 10% fashion, 10% music and 110% HAIR. We know that adds up to 130%. That’s why we’re writing for a fashion site and aren’t quantum physicists. But it also acts to highlight just how important good hair can be in the making of a musical and cultural icon, and cementing the status of bona-fide rock ‘n’ roll stars. Where would Elvis be without his quiff? Or Bowie’s Ziggy Stardust without his…his unique style? On the dole queue, that’s where. Here, Brandish pick out the 20 most iconic hair styles in rock ‘n’ roll history.

Scroll down to get started!

The Strokes

Picture 20 of 20
Picture 20 of 20

God bless The Strokes, for they saved us from Nu-metal drudgery like Linkin Park and Limp Bizkit. Seriously, I can't thank them enough for reshaping the cultural horizons of my youth in their image, or I may be sitting here typing this begrudgingly wearing three-quarter length shorts. With messy, long and effortlessly cool hair, the New York art rockers redirected fashion to the thrift store and music to the three-minute pop song throughout the "Noughties". We could have picked any member for their great hairstyles over the years, but just couldn't nail down one over the others, so we put them all in instead.

Get the Look: Marlon Brando in ‘A Streetcar Named Desire’

By Will Reid on May 5th, 2009

streetcar.jpgWhen my English teacher announced we would be studying ‘A Streetcar Named Desire,’ I have to admit to a light leap of the heart as I reminisced on John Galliano‘s ‘Blanche DuBois’ collection of 1988 and Marlon Brando in all his retro glory; oozing sex appeal and hard-edged fashion prowess. With these thoughts in mind, and a bit of time spent re-watching the iconic film made in 1951, I set about creating an outfit based on the look of Stanley Kowalski.

I’ve mixed a pair of amazing chino/casual-esque trousers with a bit of a vintage feel and a thin leather belt from with a basic tee from Topman and a pair of roughed up plimsolls from New Look. This is simple and seemingly effortless but the look as a whole is incredibly effective at turning you into a rugged, alpha-male icon. Now, with the fashion bit past, can anyone do a good New Orleans accent?

Poll: Russell Brand still a fan of ruched leggings, are you?

By admin on April 8th, 2009

rusell brand leggings papped.jpgThere was a time when it seemed like Russell Brand could have been a saviour of men’s fashion. His Dickensian witticisms and gothic-lite get up were a breath of fresh air, but lately Brand has let things slide a little. His favourite ruched leggings leave very little to the imagination, and teaming them with flip flops? Rookie mistake!

What do you think of Russell Brand’s outfit? Take our poll

Matthew Horne at the Teenage Cancer Trust afterparty

By admin on March 31st, 2009

matthew horne doc martens.jpg

Matthew Horne was snapped outside the afterparty for the Teenage Cancer Trust in London last night looking a little sheepish after he left his wallet containing £1,500 and all his cards in a taxi.

The Gavin & Stacey star has always been a little more fashion conscious than most, sporting rolled jeans and doctor’s bag which make for nicely understated trend pieces but It’s his Doc Martens that really interest me. The scuffed leather is a gorgeous shade of dove grey and the chunky sole is a trend that is slowly filtering onto the high street.

What do you think of Matthew Horne’s outfit? To me it seems a little forced, like he’s been styled for the night, do you agree or do you think he’s making brave baby steps into the world of fashion?

Love the Look: Chris Rocks the blue v-neck

By admin on March 24th, 2009

Chris Rock was snapped recently leaving the Ivy restaurant in Hollywood sporting an outfit which demonstrates menswear at its pared-down best. I love the intense blue of the jumper, which lifts the outfit from pedestrian to notable. The suit trouser trainer pairing is a little bit late ’90s but that’s kind of endearing and perhaps a look due for a comeback?

Love the Look: green wool cape

Taking the scruffy look which Jarvis does so well and giving it a bit of spit and polish this gentleman carries off a timeless look with elegance.
The hunting green of the cape is echoed in the scarf and the navy trousers and brown shoes reinforce this further. The final touch is the way the silhouette of his outfit matches his companions perfectly, showing how to coordinate with your loved ones without looking like a dolt!

Love The Look: Toby Jones/ Truman Capote in ‘Infamous’

By Will Reid on January 5th, 2009

capote.jpgDuring the Christmas season, I was lovingly entrusted with a vintage copy of Truman Capote’s ‘In Cold Blood.’ The book has definitely lived up to its reputation and the two films that have been made about the creation of the book (‘Capote’ starring Philip Seymour Hoffman and ‘Infamous’ with Toby Jones) offer not only a great plot but awesome fashion.

To achieve the look, buy simple jumpers in bright colours and wear them with trenches and blazers in base colours such as khaki, black and brown. Add either jeans or cords (if you want to edge towards a more formal look,) and bold accessories. Over-sized tortoiseshell sunglasses, fedoras, three watches at a time. Why not go all-out?

Outfit Pick: NYE Sophisticated Style

By Will Reid on December 29th, 2008

nyeparty.jpgAs we endure the last week of 2008 and look back upon a year of fashion extremes, we still have the sartorial challenge of New Year’s Eve (NYE) ahead of us. While many opt for a loud, proud and (often) garish get-up, I am aiming to attempt a subtle luxury with the help of muted colours but opulent fabrics (velvet, silk, corduroy etc.)

The black cords above are a great base and, with a white shirt and the dove grey waistcoat pictured, they are easy to pull-off. The bow tie and vintage cuff-links are fun and appropriately over-the-top while the royal blue loafers are expensive but a great talking point.

Have fun, look great and, if you wake up the next morning to find your D&G loafers drowning in the contents of a red wine bottle, at least you know that you’re part of the ‘Walk of Shame Chic’ trend de jour!

Mighty Boosh at O2 Arena: Noel Fielding wows with his stage outfits

By admin on December 19th, 2008

The Mighty Boosh have lost a little of their quirky homespun charm now that they’re living up to their Rock n’ Roll onstage personas, but they can still pack a venue with adoring fans.

Their gig at the O2 arena in London yesterday was a sellout, Noel Fielding had as many costume changes as Katy Perry at the MTV EMAs, including the ones pictured above but the highlight was probably a bizarre old lady outfit teamed with gold boots! I doubt that any of Fielding’s costumes would translate to real life, but as the comedian once said himself “you can never be unhappy in a poncho”, so maybe give it a go during the low points of the Christmas break?

Will’s Christmas Outfit Picks: Topman ‘Exclamation Mark Print’ Polo

By Will Reid on December 17th, 2008

outfit.jpg

Note to Editor: Can we feature pieces we bought just yesterday?

Now that I’ve cleared that up, I can proceed with this Christmas Outfit Pick. This polo is a great find and the loud print is definitely eye-catching. I found it in Topman yesterday afternoon and it was reduced to £10 from £16. In the image, the polo looks black but it is actually blue and the print looks slightly bigger (as opposed to the foot-print looking print pictured!)

I styled it with blue skinny jeans from Topman, two-tone trainers from Gargyle.com and a cable-knit beanie from Old Navy. If you want us to feature an outfit you have designed around a high-street item (from any country,) send it to isabelle@shinymedia.com.

Love the Look: Blue and Grey

By admin on December 5th, 2008

blue grey love the look brandish style scout.jpg

Grey on top, blue below. It’s like a colour version of a mullet, business at the front, party at the back and works really well.
Keeping the top half neutral and grey makes the blue denim really pop, and having a blue bag in a similar colour is a clever touch. Layering a blazer over a jumper and shirt is an easy way to keep warm in warm and gives off relaxed, smart vibes.

It’s different for boys: Jamie Hince, more shabby than chic?

By admin on December 1st, 2008

jamie hince scruffy rock kate moss.jpg

Looking at this image of Jamie Hince stepping after a night at girlfriend Kate Moss‘ flat I started thinking about how the Croydon-born model always manages to look chic and stylish is shabby rock-y vintage while Hince looks a little raggedy.

Don’t get me wrong, I’m sure the sight of me on a Sunday morning in pjs scuttling to the newsie is far, far worse but the point I’m trying to make is that women are armed with an array of stylistic tools. Mixing mussed up hair with a fancy dress, or shabby jeans with a flashy jewellery has long been Moss’ preserve. When a man dresses scruffy he isn’t in possession of as much to work with to make those well-worn basics look smart, by replacing the well-worn suede boots with a pair of new shoes or the Britpop-era jacket with a duffel coat Hince could have gone from scuzzy to artfully skewhiff.

Love the Look: chinos and vintage tee

By admin on November 21st, 2008

Every once in a while you stumble upon a trusty outfit formula which you can use and reuse to your heart’s content. For me it’s bright tights, vintage skirts, lace ups and a men’s cardie, when I’m stuck for inspiration I can wear umpteen variations of this outfit before I run out of looks.
Back to menswear, it seems that CA has stumbled upon a failsafe outfit formula, his combination of vintage tee, chinos, quirky belt and cardigan can have a dozen different permutations but still look fresh.

Yay or Nay?: Ronnie Wood and Girlfriend Go Matching!

By Will Reid on October 27th, 2008

ronnie.jpg

Ever since Ronnie Wood ran off with his 18-year old mistress Ekaterina Ivanova, I have been keeping my eye on the new couple’s outfits. Throughout history, scandals have been defined by fashion; Princess Diana’s tiger-print swimsuit, Heather Mills’ patchwork suit, Monica Lewinsky’s ‘Blue Dress.’

It struck me that Ronnie and Ivanova were often wearing outfits with a similar theme. On the left, we can see that one week, they both indulged in tie-dye print and during this week, they wore on-trend plaid/tartan jackets.

What do you think of couples in matching outfits? Yay or Nay?

Love the Look: Sebasatian Weckman

I tried unsuccessfully to translate the accompanying text to this fine photgraph but the results were utter gibberish. I suppose for now all we need to know is that Mr Weckman cuts a handsome figure in a red cardigan and rumpled cream slacks. The neat trainers are a nice touch and allow the cardigan to take centre stage.

If you can speak Suomi drop me an email and let me know what they’re saying!
