Just last week, Brandish editor Isabelle asked the general fashion public if the waistcoat could ever be worn well. We were subjected to the torture of Boyzone (whose waistcoat crimes can also be seen here,) and then buttered up with stories of white waffle and petrol blue. Now, I’ve created an outfit out of an All Saints waistcoat and looked to Frank Sinatra for tailoring inspiration.
Tell us what you think by e-mailing isabelle@shinymedia.com!
Product details after the jump.

Mad Men has gone from a show known for substance to one known solely for its style. It’s a rare occasion when a show gets anointed like this and some writers got a little excited about it, even calling it the men’s Sex and the City (A ridiculous statement – everyone knows the man’s SATC is Entourage).
Sensing that another plain style feature on Mad Men would be overkill, Blackbook has asked Mad Men’s costume designer Janie Bryant what the characters would wear if they were around today. According to Bryant, Don Draper would wear Paul Smith, Roger Sterling would wear Paul Stuart and Pete Campbell would be wearing John Varvatos.

Wallace poses in a Paul Smith suit and Gromit sits with a Duchamp scarf and pair of Ray Ban ‘Wayfarers.’
Zooey Deschanel, Agy Deyn, Irina Lazareanu, Vanessa Paradis; the fashion world is known for it’s adopting of a different muse for each different season. However, while most muses can be linked by their quirky style, elfin features and statement look, Wallace & Gromit really stand out from the crowd.
That hasn’t stopped Harvey Nichols from enlisting their modeling talent for their latest campaign and decked out in D&G shirts, Alexander McQueen suits, Paul Smith scarfs and Ray Ban Wafarers, I’m actually quite jealous!
Read on for more details and pictures- it’s worth it, trust me!

Maxïmo Park frontman Paul Smith strikes a characteristically kooky pose onstage at Edge Fest in Edinburgh. Smith is looking dapper as always with his trademark hat, an eccentric button-down shirt and cracking chequered suit.
The gig took place at the Corn Exchange slap bang in the middle of awful line-up which included Scouting for Girls and Newton Faulkner, *shudder*.

Does anyone read Stella magazine? Of course not. In fact, when I said that I bet your mind immediately thought it was Stella Artois’s version of Acne Paper. For those that don’t know (i.e. everyone) Stella is a magazine tucked away inside the Sunday Telegraph, and they’ve featured a ’10 rules’ like article with Paul Smith.
They seem to have given Paul Smith a bit more space to elaborate on points, so that even though he may make the same basic point as Lucas Ossendrijver, he’s able to state his point better. One interesting point he makes is that, for him, manners are more important than style.

In case you’ve been too lazy to scroll down the page, this is the second post of Matches sale items, this time focusing on Paul Smith.
Cobalt blue cardigan (£78): Cobalt blue is a great spring/summer colour and will make you stand out in a sea of grey cardigans.
Brown brogues (£165): Everyone needs a pair of brogues as they make any outfit much sharper. Round toe shoes are also a lot more grown up than the ‘I wish I played in the Horrors’ pointy toe look.
Brown leather bag (£188): I’m not even sure why I like this so much, but there’s something very charming about this bag.

Manchester United Football Club have enlisted Paul Smith, to design the team formal wear and accessories for the next three years. The deal follows a similar deal by Champions League opponent, Chelsea and Italian designer, Giorgio Armani.
“The outfits are outstanding. This is a Club with a rich heritage and one that has a clear sense of identity. Sir Paul has recognised that, while providing clothing that will be the envy of every other Club,” said club manager, Sir Alex Ferguson. Paul Smith will supply Manchester United playing staff and officials for all domestic matches, European Cup campaign and pre-season tours.

Underwear & Swimwear

Hopefully this summer will sound the sartorial death knell for knee-length boardshorts. They’re fine on teenagers and actual surfers, but on a twenty or thirty-something male the look is a bit tragic.
Something a little more tailored and fitted looks far more fashion-savvy, these Paul Smith shorts are a reasonable £45 and look a lot more stylish than post-pubescent baggies. The neutral colour combination is so chic people will mistake you for a classy European on the beach. Team with Reebok classics at your peril!

If you like the nautical look but don’t
want to look like you’re in fancy dress, you may be reticent about buying boat
shoes. So why not go halfway and get these boat shoe inspired Paul
Smith trainers?
The perfect blend of canvas trainer and
boat shoe, this is for someone who loves the idea of boat shoes but hates
tassels. They’d also match perfectly with that John Smedley
polo and those Topman shorts.
The multicoloured laces would provide a welcome break from the blue and white
colours and could act as a sly splash of colour in any outfit. These are
available from Coggles.com and cost £70.

Last week, as news was released of the Macca divorce settlement, my brother Doug (as well as the lovely Kim over at Catwalk Queen) brought my attention to the criminal costume of Miss Mills.
Was it Westwood? McQueen? The (ex-) McCartney herself? Well no dear brother, it appears that her suit may have been Paul Smith. I was sifting through the menswear Paul Smith PS collection and came across this waistcoat from the legendary Brit. Basking in the sunlight of indie styling and candid-style photography, this waistcoat is a perfect example of menswear doing it better.

“Fashion is in the sky, in the street, fashion has to do with ideas, the way we live, what is happening.” If good old Coco Chanel was right (which really isn’t a question) then there is really no reason to feel as guilty as I do about desiring these pricey PJs from Paul Smith. Prepare yourself now for some major alliteration.

If you’ve seen it go wrong, you might be reticent
about the splash of colour trend. I mean, a splash is fine, but too much
splashing can create a jarring effect. Seeing as accessories are the best way
to add colour to an outfit, why not start with this sky
blue Paul Smith belt?
The great thing about the belt is that it’s
not meant to match. You don’t have to wear a matching sky blue watch and bag in
order to pull the look off, just have co-ordinating colours that draw attention to
the vibrant belt. The belt is available from the Paul Smith website for £75.

These bracelets from Paul Smith have been around for a while but they’re proper nice. They’re quite masculine for a bracelet and they manage to straddle the hippy-luxury divide by being both a beaded bracelet but also made of silver.
It’s jewellery for the man who doesn’t wear jewellery and at £75 it’s quite affordable. The website says it’s 40cm long, but I think that’s a mistake as that would be longer than the average belt.
Available from the Paul Smith online store.

New year, new pants – that’s how the old
saying doesn’t go. Everyone harks on about essentials, but I don’t think enough
time is spent harking on about our most needed essential: The humble boxer (If
you’re wearing pants or Y-fronts, then leave now. Close the door behind you).
Seeing as we’re in the second month of 2008, it’s more than likely that you’ll
have some underwear that should have been thrown out a long time ago.
What usually stops people is the knowledge
that they’ll be buying the same boxers again. Frank Dandy boxers are great and
all, but you may want something with some sartorial elegance. These Paul
Smith ones fit the bill. Whilst they’re typical Paul Smith, they’re still
unique enough to stand out from your underwear collection.
