What to wear on New Year’s Eve – tips for looking great

Tailored polos from Hackett help accentuate the pecs and biceps, making you look fitter

Sponsored post

As far as nights out are concerned, there are few that match the excitement and hype of New Year’s Eve. While many people will plan where they’re going weeks if not months in advance, many men will leave thinking about what to wear until the night itself. This inevitably leads to many people ringing in the New Year in a way that leaves them cringing when they finally see their photos pop up on Facebook. Looking good doesn’t need to be difficult however, if you follow these tips.

Don’t go overboard – some people have the temptation to dress themselves up like a Christmas tree, but an understated, elegant look demonstrates an inner confidence. Saying that, dress too casual and you’ll still be standing out for all the wrong reasons. Wearing a classic polo shirt is a great way to balance the need to be smart without trying, but if you’re going to keep it this simple you’ll need quality. Tailored polos from Hackett are ideal, as the way they’re cut helps accentuate the pecs and biceps, making you naturally look fitter.

Wear a watch – It goes without saying that knowing the time on New Year’s Eve is handy – just make sure that it’s correct to the exact second. If you’re the type of person that usually just checks their phone for the time make this night the exception. As well as being practical the right watch can complement and enhance any outfit.

Dress well from the feet up – While people might look at your face and top first, it won’t be long before they’ve looked at your feet, and an unflattering pair of shoes can be the undoing of even the most stylish of outfits. If wearing smart trousers it’s particularly important to ensure that your shoes match – black trousers and brown shoes have never looked good together and they still don’t. A final note: don’t choose New Year’s Eve to be the first night you wear a pair of shoes or you might not make it till midnight if you find out they’re particularly painful.

Focus on the smaller details – Often an outfit can be transformed by the right belt, a skinny tie or even a pair of glasses. Once you’ve decided on your main items of clothing feel free to experiment with accessories to achieve that killer look.

Smell as good as you look – It really doesn’t matter how good you look if someone is put off by your smell as soon as they approach you. Ensuring your clothes are cleans and your body is deodorised is the bare minimum, while cologne or aftershave, used in moderation, can transform any outfit.

As always, the most important thing is to feel comfortable and confident with what you’re wearing. Since you’re more likely to feel confident if you look good, however, it wouldn’t hurt to start thinking about what to wear now, so you can make sure you start the year as you mean to go on.

Yay or Nay? Mickey Boardman’s Gender-Bender Style

By Will Reid on April 20th, 2009

340x.jpgMickey Boardman is the infamous columnist at Paper magazine as well as a social butterfly and fashion extraordinaire. He is also the proud owner of a rather distinctive and intriguing look. Boardman blends paired down basics in block colours (Lacoste polo shirts, chinos, simple cardigans in luxury cashmere,) with extravagant costume jewellery and accessories. Chunky necklaces and lavish loops of gorgeous beads add a high-fashion touch to any simple look. But I worry it might raise a few eyebrows (and maybe a few fists) down at the local supermarket.

So what do you think- Yay or Nay?

Visionaire 54 SPORT- A Lacoste Tribute

By Will Reid on July 1st, 2008

visionairelacoste.jpgThe latest edition of Visionaire has been outed as a tribute to Lacoste’s 75th Anniversary. So far, the infamously expensive Visionaire collection has seen issues made of puzzles and vinyl records but we are now being treated to the ‘first wearable issue.’ Confused? Let me explain.

This issue of Visionaire, in collaboration with Lacoste, will contain three state-of-the-art “full-coverage, full-colour, photographically-printed Lacoste polo shirts featuring artwork by some of the world’s leading artists and photographers.” Basically, the magazine will come in the form of a suitcase containing twelve images and three different shirts. There will be one small, one medium and one large within each copy and there will be four different sets of the SPORT issue. Included is the artwork of Nick Knight, Karl Lagerfeld and Michael Stipe to name but a brilliant few.

The issue will be previewed during next week’s Paris Haute-Couture collections. Those with a subscription are guaranteed a copy.

Each issue costs $250 (£125.)

Full Circle striped polo shirt

By admin on June 17th, 2008

fullcircle polo.jpgIf, for some bizarre reason, you haven’t hopped onto the Madras train yet we are still offering alternatives. Alternatives that don’t stray outside of the nautical look, but alternatives nonetheless.

We’ve featured a John Smedley version of this polo a while back but let’s face it – you’re not going to spend £122 on a polo shirt. This Full Circle polo is pretty much identical, I haven’t counted the stripes or anything, but I’d guess they’d be around the same amount. The FC one also has a pen pocket, something the Smedley one doesn’t even have. And to top it all off, it’s only £38.

Grey and green Comme Des Garçons polo shirt from Dover Street Market

By admin on May 8th, 2008

dsm dover street market polo shirt.jpg
Everyone is cracking out the summer wear but now the sun has come out I keep seeing one of my pet hates, beachwear as officewear.
Don’t get me wrong, I’m all for keeping cool but I don’t know why that equates with late ’90s surfbum look. This two-tone Comme Des Garçons polo shirt from Dover Street Market (£70) is sharp and will keep its good looks no matter how hot you get. Team with a pair of lightweight tailored bright trousers in deep blue or if you’re really hot now might be the time to go for short shorts.

Fred Perry X Paul Weller

By admin on April 8th, 2008

perryweller.jpg

Paul Weller and Fred Perry are so deeply linked that you wonder why he hasn’t just gave up the music stuff and just started working for them full time. It’s not like anyone wants to hear a new album from him. This collection of polo shirts, due for release in June, are pretty much what we’ve come to expect from their collaborations, in a good way.

With these shirts, it’s the details that count. The detail on the neck manages to make it stand out whilst still looking like a polo shirt. If you’re absolutely dying to get your hands on these, you can register at the Fred Perry website to get them a full 72 hours before everyone else does.

Paul Smith boat trainers

By admin on April 3rd, 2008

ps boat trainers.jpg

If you like the nautical look but don’t
want to look like you’re in fancy dress, you may be reticent about buying boat
shoes. So why not go halfway and get these boat shoe inspired Paul
Smith trainers
?

The perfect blend of canvas trainer and
boat shoe, this is for someone who loves the idea of boat shoes but hates
tassels. They’d also match perfectly with that John Smedley
polo
and those Topman shorts.
The multicoloured laces would provide a welcome break from the blue and white
colours and could act as a sly splash of colour in any outfit. These are
available from Coggles.com and cost £70.

John Smedley Polo shirt

By admin on March 31st, 2008
smedleytop.jpg

So, you’ve decided to go nautical this season – good choice. Most of the pieces are pretty timeless on their own and together it’s a look that won’t be copied by many, allowing you some individuality. The absolute best thing about the nautical look is that you’re spoilt for choice from the waist down. Finding the perfect top to finish off your look can be a quite a challenge but John Smedley aim to make the task easier with this Polo
shirt
.

The only way this top could be any more nautical is if it came with a sailor’s cap and keys to a boat. And at £122 you could say that it ought to come with these extras as standard. If the price doesn’t put you off, then you can get it from the official John Smedley website.

Surface to Air Spring/Summer collection

By admin on February 15th, 2008

Given the fact that London Fashion Week has
been especially weak for menswear, we’ve had to focus on label’s spring summer
collection. Surface To
Air
have been featured here a good few times and for good reason; Their
pieces are top notch. In addition to the jewellery that Tim Hunter discovered,
they’ve added footwear to the latest collection.

Rogues Gallery

By admin on January 23rd, 2008

RoguesgalleryThe new season (as in SS08, not AW08 which weâ?ve been posting about lately?? are you following?) from Rogues Gallery includes this polo shirt, which I rather like.
The label likes the life on the high seas and this wee boat print is the best manifestation of that in their current collection; a collection which is otherwise made up of some fairly lame stuff with anchor prints or slogans such as â??Sailors Have More Funâ?. Very droll.
The collection is available from select stores and Context (although they haven’??t got their new collection yet).
