Brand Spotlight, Footwear, Top Five
By Will Reid on March 11th, 2009
Last week I was in search for a pair of school shoes. Beginning with classic brogues, I sampled a pair of black loafers and sneakily tried on a pair of Paul Smith Jermyns (with glorious plum laces) before ending up with a pair of not-so-exciting pointed Topman lace-ups. Inspired by this bout of school-shoe shopping I ventured onto Oki-Ni and came across their Doc Martens. Floral. Striped. Coloured. Neon. But then I came across their 1461 shoe and couldn’t believe what I was seeing.
A shoe, in simple black leather, that was more than double the price but half as nice as many of the shoes I had seen the previous day. These Dr. Martens did not look worth their £70 price tag, especially in comparison to my £35 Topman shoes. Granted, the Dr. Martens are probably better quality and might last longer but, are they even that easy on the eye? I, for one, wouldn’t want to be seen in them.
Fashion is fickle, even in times of economic recession. See after the jump for my Top 5 Best on a Budget Smart Shoes.

T-shirts, Polos & Shirts

Buffalo check is all over the high street, but as we saw yesterday with the Winter Scarves pick a simple change of colour can make it seem more unexpected.
River Island‘s lumberjack shirt (£29.99) is an inspired way to bring a little vim to a workwear outfit. Purple is a great hue for menswear, teamed with a little grey it loses its Sweet Valley High connotations and looks smart and adventurous. Perhaps the most desirable adjectives when describing someone’s dress?

It’s time for us all to start dressing like Lightspeed Champion. Seriously. Take a look at any highstreet store and you’re bound to see a mixture of chunky cardigans, clear lens glasses and trapper hats. Add these together and you have Lightspeed Champion’s look. Out of these three defining pieces, the trapper hat is the one that looks to make a big comeback.
As usual, Topman are quickest off the mark, covering all bases of the trapper hat from (fake) fur hats to Number Nine-like knitted ones. ASOS are also stocking up on trapper hats, with three currently in stock; even River Island’s online store – usually pretty threadbare – has a trapper hat available. [You can check these hats for yourself after the jump]
Given that it’s only the start of September, it’s fair to say that this will be a key headpiece for this season. The only question is whether Lightspeed Champion will carry on wearing them when he sees so many people copying his style.

Cheap and cheerful this tie is a quick fix to brighten up your wardrobe, the bright coral is such a good colour.
Ok so it’s polyester and you might get bored of the colour but as a wardrobe pick-me-up it’s second to none. At only £9.99 from River Island it’s definitely worth a punt, taking your outfit from normal to formal never looked this good.

What are the odds of snapping two of River Island’s designers at GFW? I swear on my Margaret Howell wide-leg trousers that this isn’t deliberate…
First up is Andy Grant Design Manager at River Island, who is wearing Raf Simons trainers. Andy is sporting a deceptively simple look, but little details like the cutaway collar, gold Casio watch and subtle shine finish of the windcheater really make the outfit work.

Jeans & Trousers

When even River Island is doing short shorts you know a trend has hit the mainstream. They’re a wallet-pleasing £21 which is the right price for trying something out. The smart tailoring elevates the shorts above beachwear but the chambray fabric stops it from looking too contrived.
Onto the all-important matter of length, thankfully these shorts aren’t as minimal as the ones Facehunter snapped in our poll last week. They’re a rather more decent just above the knee meaning you could get away with wearing them in the office…Give it a go!

Now I know for a fact that I wasn’t the only one disappointed with Met Gala-attending celebrities lack of Superhero costume inspiration. In fact, Zac Posen was the only attendee who matched up to my high standards of fancy-dress. Therefore, I was delighted when I came across this River Island cap with Marvel Comic decoration (Persil, Armani, River Island- what isn’t Marvel on at the moment!) The only River Island I have ever entered outside the realm of cyber-space was in Fife, Scotland and the fact that the staff could collectively set up a tattoo and piercing parlour helped me to never return. Add to this that I was once told I don’t have a “hat-face,” I was understandably cautious of putting this on my WISHLIST. No longer shall I worry as this cap has enough Wham! Zap! Pow! to last me at least another month of pretending I could wear it.

Left to Right; World Tour t-shirt £16.99, Seventh Seal Sun t-shirt £15, Seventh Seal Japan Create £15
Inspired by Isabelle’s talk of thunderstorms and rainclouds at Shiny Towers, I decided to source some foreign-focused fashion for those rainy-day dreams of tropical (and of course warm) destinations.
These t-shirts are (just in case you didn’t notice) based on posters and leaflets around Tokyo. Fashioned from 100% cotton, these could be based on pages from manga comics or, in the case of my fave, vintage propaganda banners shouting “Japan Create!” In bright colours and bold graphics, abandon any sense of gloom and widen your outlook with images of cartoons and lasers.
River Island isn’t exactly famed for being on-trend and it doesn’t pretend to be high fashion but let’s take a lesson from DJ Karl and embrace new things- be it high street or Grand Theft Auto 4.

Roll-up! Roll-up! Rolled sleeve shirts (sorry!) are still big this summer, and one of my favourites is this milky brown offering from River Island. Casual and smart at the same time it’s just what you need at work when temperatures start to rise and it’s yours for a reasonable £26.99. So roll up your sleeves (last time!) and get out to the shops!

This might be the last thing on your mind if you’ve planned to booze it up but Easter Weekend is the perfect time to stock up on new summer clothes. The overall looks on the high street are fresh and casual with hints of formal wear in accessories and tailoring. White is quite big, the New Look suit on the right is very cool, and after the jump French Connection have got an equally spanking outfit in pale tones. I think Matalan have obviously been reading my post on the René Lacoste shoes because they’ve got the retro french sportsman look down to a t. River Island are sharpening up their act with some great pieces for this season, and it’s a great place to head for a more street look, see after the jump, right.
