With summer fast approaching (- or due to make an appearance any time now) your look is not complete without a set of shades. With so many different styles to choose from and plenty of good High Street versions at a fraction of the cost, some of the coolest ones right now have got to be retro inspired ones. Sunglasses have become iconic items in fashion terms, with certain styles becoming synonymous with particular famous people in history; From James Dean, Gregory Peck, to Roy Orbison and Karl Lagerfeld (- and not forgetting Tom Cruise in Top Gun, if we have to…) here’s our top 12 cool retro picks…

In some ways Duffle Coats are now classics that in theory anyone should be able to wear at any time. However unless you buy a smart one you run two risks. 1 You might end up looking a little too much like Paddington Bear. 2 Cheap ones can look a bit scruffy and won’t do for anything approaching a formal occasion.
However for long winter walks with dog, fidgeting on cold seats at football grounds or just posing by the South Bank they are ideal. In the gallery there is a section of five rather cool Duffle coats, but before we get there here are a few things you may or may not know about them.
1 They date from WW2 where they were standard issue to much of the Navy mainly in tan rather than black.
2 Their popularity in the 1950s largely stems from the huge number of coats that were bought from military surplus stores.
3 Gloverall, a firm originally set up to sell the army surplus coats, started making their own in the late 50s and what we know today as a Duffle Coat – think leather fastenings and Buffalo horn toggles with a double faced checkback fabric – stems from their original designs.
4 They were ubiquitous on the CND marches of the 50s and early 60s worn largely by students and teamed up with French cigarettes and trad jazz records. I am sure Ian Carmichael wears one in the film Lucky Jim, but I can’t find the pic to prove it.
5 Although they have always been available they have had brief period of being very fashionable in the 80s check out the priceless pic of Harriet Harman wearing one) and the 90s (mainly thanks to the Gallagher Brothers).
6 These days they are often associated with Scottish bands – think Belle & Sebastian and Franz Ferdinand.
Pics from PA Images and Gloverall (check out their site for some more amazing Duffle shots!)
Gloverall Made in London Duffle Coat £285
This is the original, and IMO the best Duffle Coat. Aftre the last war Gloverall bought a load of Duffle Coats from the MOD and have them in stock ever since. This has the classic buffalo horns and leather fastening, shoulder yoke panel, storm flap, side pockets, standard hem, interior pocket and hood with adjusters. And of course the tartan inner lining too. It is made from rich wool.

We haven’t had a jumper post on this website for a day or two now, which is odd because as John Lewis email pointed out this morning it is only 29 sleeps until Christmas.
Round about now the great jumper sale begins with high street brands traditionally slashing prices in a bid to piss off people who did their Christmas shopping early tempt us to finally buy the knitwear that first caught our eye in September.
Even without the price cutting though there are however a few rather decent sub £30 jumpers that we would take a punt on, and here are five of them.
The massive downsides of cheap jumpers are 1 If they are mainly acrylic then they can be a bit scratchy to wear. 2 If they are cheap wool or wool mix they don’t tend to wash too well and may be out of shape by the time you pull the Christmas tree down.
The massive upside is that you can wear them with pride over the festive season (and in the snow that is inevitably going to hit the UK in December) and they are cheap as chips.
If you have a bit more budget check out these Cashmere, Classic and Statement jumpers.
Burton's Skier Blue £30
If you aren't put off by the tag 100% acrylic then this Burton's jumper has a suitably cheery skier motif. Also available in grey.

Adams Black and White Dogstooth Trousers £85
Made from Pure Wools, Mohair Wool and Polyester Blends, these have a straight slightly narrower leg 16.5 inch bottoms.
Adams of London
One of the likely big trends in women’s wear for next is year monochrome black and white. Think Bridget Riley, op art, stripes of varying lengths, maybe a bit of dogs tooth too.
Apparently stripey op art style dresses by the likes of Marc Jac0bs are predicted to drip on down to the High St.
Chances are that the mod monochrome look will also have an influence on menswear too, which is good news for the heritage brands who t are always selling 60 influenced clothes. Here are few items that are likely to be (coughs) bang on trend next year.

There is a bit of trend in comedy jumpers this season. You only need to check out River Island’s selection to see how prevalent they are. If you want knitwear that doesn’t have to be teamed up with paper hats and plastic cracker jewelry that you can wear all winter long then check out this lot.
These are our favourites of the season. All classic jumpers. All very stylish and a little more conservative than our last selection.

ASOS - Hawaiian Print Shirt - £25
When the summer heat kicks up a wavy haze off the concrete city streets, we know it can be tough to resist the urge to laze around in just your lightest shirts and underwear.
Yet, we just can’t accept the return of the Hawaiian shirt, this summer’s slob-chic must-have. It’s like someone covered themselves in wallpaper paste, tore the pages out of a tattoo catalogue and rolled around in the scraps, off their nut on umbrella-wearing cocktails.
But who are we to judge the fashion gods? We’ve pooled together ten of our favourite offerings from the likes of ASOS and Ben Sherman, ranging from the blindingly garish to more subtle, understated prints if you’re feeling a little less daring but still want to be on-trend when the heatwave finally kicks in.
So grab your hula skirts and piña coladas and dive into the gallery above for our pick of this year’s best Hawaiian shirts.
While you’re at it, have a listen to our short 60′s summer playlist below. It’s sure to instil some sunshine-surfing spirit in you even if the clouds outside your window are stubbornly grey!

A first look at River Islands Mens Spring Summer 2011 collection has now been released, and we were pleasantly surprised. Despite the fact the high st shop has opted to go with a fairly conservative colour palette, composed primarily of neutral tones with lots of blue denim, they have created a number of strong looks. It also seems as thought they are counting on a warm summer, with lots of tailored shorts included. What did you think of the collection?

The Times has a feature at the moment detailing the changing size of the common tie as we go through decades of economic change. Apparently John Lewis has announced “a dramatic inch-loss of nearly 25 per cent in width over the past six months” with its most popular ties. Charlie Allen, the famous tailor Brandish recently had an exclusive sit-down with over the new ‘n’ improved England kit, told the Times that “the impact of economic turmoil on tie design can be traced back through the previous recessions of the 20th century. While postwar Britain and the Swinging Sixties embraced exaggerated prints and widths of up to 5in, the downturns of the 1930s and 1980s saw sizes reduce to as little as an inch.”

Over at Catwalk Queen we’re gearing up for Graduate Fashion Week, we’ve been profiling the progression of graduates and reading their tips for getting into the industry. Russell Williams went to University of Derby and has been the menswear t-shirt designer at River Island since 2008.
How did you find getting a fashion job after graduation?
This is my first real job since graduation, and it’s a continuation of a work placement I got into at River Island.
What tips/advice would you give to students who want to get into the industry?
Be pro-active, email, phone and knock on their doors, be confident, sign up to as many agencies as possible. Also work experience and internships help a lot.
Where do you see yourself in 10 years time?
Not too sure, the world as they say is your oyster!

Knitwear and accessories are the shining stars of the River Island Menswear collection, they’ve got a great range of chunky cardigans, arran-style jumpers and we love the rocket cardie below!
We caught up with the RI team at the press day and couldn’t resist taking a photo of their outfits. We spoke to James Lawrence who does the bags for the brand, and he told us he was really excited about all the range, and the nylon shopper (last pic) was declared group fave.

Coats & Jackets, How to
By admin on March 30th, 2009

This check jacket doesn’t deviate too much from the mainstream, it’s a nice spring blouson which you could wear quite easily with jeans but I have bigger plans for this piece. Available from River Island for £39.99 it deserves a little more attention.
A pair of narrow cobalt blue trousers will transform the jacket into something more extraordinary and will really stand out against the pale stone grey and the check. Add a pair of lace ups and some socks in carefully considered colours (I’m thinking something along the lines of magenta, grey or coral) and you’ll be ramping up the drama even more for this high street piece.

Brand Spotlight, Footwear, Top Five
By Will Reid on March 11th, 2009
Last week I was in search for a pair of school shoes. Beginning with classic brogues, I sampled a pair of black loafers and sneakily tried on a pair of Paul Smith Jermyns (with glorious plum laces) before ending up with a pair of not-so-exciting pointed Topman lace-ups. Inspired by this bout of school-shoe shopping I ventured onto Oki-Ni and came across their Doc Martens. Floral. Striped. Coloured. Neon. But then I came across their 1461 shoe and couldn’t believe what I was seeing.
A shoe, in simple black leather, that was more than double the price but half as nice as many of the shoes I had seen the previous day. These Dr. Martens did not look worth their £70 price tag, especially in comparison to my £35 Topman shoes. Granted, the Dr. Martens are probably better quality and might last longer but, are they even that easy on the eye? I, for one, wouldn’t want to be seen in them.
Fashion is fickle, even in times of economic recession. See after the jump for my Top 5 Best on a Budget Smart Shoes.

T-shirts, Polos & Shirts

Buffalo check is all over the high street, but as we saw yesterday with the Winter Scarves pick a simple change of colour can make it seem more unexpected.
River Island‘s lumberjack shirt (£29.99) is an inspired way to bring a little vim to a workwear outfit. Purple is a great hue for menswear, teamed with a little grey it loses its Sweet Valley High connotations and looks smart and adventurous. Perhaps the most desirable adjectives when describing someone’s dress?
