How the ash cloud stopped Robert Lewandowski signing for Blackburn

By Stefano on April 25th, 2013

Remember the ash cloud that hovered over the north of Europe in 2010? Well it didn’t just have the effect of crippling the Icelandic economy and downing hundreds of planes.

It also scuppered what might have been the footballing coup of the decade.

For had it not happened Borussia Dortmund’s Robert Lewandowski could well have been a Blackburn Rovers player.

Apparently Sam Allardyce had bid £4.3m for the lanky goalscoring genius, a fee which Polish side Lech Poznan were happy with it.

Allardyce was due to hold talks with the player but the Icelandic volcanic ash cloud forced the cancellation of his flight.

Allardyce then bought Croatian Nikola Kalinic for around £6m and Lewandowski left for Germany.

Three years on and Rovers are just about going to keep their Championship status while Dortmund are almost certainly heading to Wembley for the Champions League final.

On a more serious note I really hope that Lewandowski stays with Dortmund and doesn’t move to Bayern Munich like his colleague Mario Gotze. Losing your star players to your deadliest rivals is one thing – but losing both is beyond belief.

Allardyce acknowledges he ‘might lose’ Diame. But will it be to Arsenal or Spurs?

By Stefano on January 29th, 2013

Interesting quote this morning from a press conference given by West Ham boss Sam Allardyce.

Asked about what the situation was with Mohammed Diame Allardyce seemed to acknowledge that the controversial midfielder could be on his way out of Upton Park.

Allardyce said ‘It is total confusion. I’m as confused as anyone. I hope we don’t, but we might lose him.’

Diame, who has played superbly for the Hammers this season has been tracked by Arsene Wenger for quite some time. However some sources, well the Metro are suggesting that Spurs may have moved ahead in the race to sign the player. The rumour is that he has a £3.5million buyout clause in his contract, but in reality the clubs may expect to pay a lot more than that for his services.
