In my continuing mission to get the men of Britain into short shorts I’ve found a great pair which combines the tailoring of a high-fashion pair of short shorts with good wearability and even better price.
These cotton shorts are only £25 from Burton, they have a great shape but the lightness of the fabric gives it a more relaxed feel.
Team with brightly coloured deck shoes and an acid pastel polo for a sarcastic Sloane look, or if you’re in a more sincere mood wear with a fine gauge shirt with rolled up sleeves and canvas lace ups.

When even River Island is doing short shorts you know a trend has hit the mainstream. They’re a wallet-pleasing £21 which is the right price for trying something out. The smart tailoring elevates the shorts above beachwear but the chambray fabric stops it from looking too contrived.
Onto the all-important matter of length, thankfully these shorts aren’t as minimal as the ones Facehunter snapped in our poll last week. They’re a rather more decent just above the knee meaning you could get away with wearing them in the office…Give it a go!

Hopefully this summer will sound the sartorial death knell for knee-length boardshorts. They’re fine on teenagers and actual surfers, but on a twenty or thirty-something male the look is a bit tragic.
Something a little more tailored and fitted looks far more fashion-savvy, these Paul Smith shorts are a reasonable £45 and look a lot more stylish than post-pubescent baggies. The neutral colour combination is so chic people will mistake you for a classy European on the beach. Team with Reebok classics at your peril!

Shorts shorts disappeared off the radar for a bit at Brandish but the sun has come out, the Sartorialist is obsessing over cuffing and at Style Salvage they’re getting all heated over the guy on the left, so they’re back on our minds.
Bang on time for Wednesday here comes a poll for you to add your tuppence worth, let us know what you think of short shorts after the jump.

The plaid on plaid trend is still for the fashion forward few so it hasn’t had many takers yet. Due to the difficulty in pulling this off, it’s unlikely that the trend will ever take off like V-neck jumpers did. With that said, there are still some great check items to be found, like these Fila Gold check shorts (£45).
Woody Allen once said ‘Can you imagine the level of a mind that watches wrestling?’ That’s how I feel about cargo shorts – which despite the fact their awfulness, still continue to popular. Separate yourself from the cargo short wearing herd by wearing some shorts that don’t make you look like a soldier who decided to cut his gear for summer.

German Born, New York based designer Robert Geller is a very new kid on the block. His label only launched in A/W 07, after working at Marc Jacobs, revamping Cloak and creating a women’s wear range called Harald. The following sentence will sound a little odd, but I’m going to look at a S/S 2008 range while we’re actually in the same season.
While – bar the lime green shorts – none of the pieces break the mould, they are very wearable and could be blended into ones personal style without looking like a store mannequin. Trenches, leathers (jackets and trousers) and cardigans are the staple pieces of the collection and, apart from the leather, they all look ready to wear in these upcoming sunny days. Whilst the label doesn’t have a UK stockist at the moment, you can order some of the items from Blackbird.

If you like the nautical look but don’t
want to look like you’re in fancy dress, you may be reticent about buying boat
shoes. So why not go halfway and get these boat shoe inspired Paul
Smith trainers?
The perfect blend of canvas trainer and
boat shoe, this is for someone who loves the idea of boat shoes but hates
tassels. They’d also match perfectly with that John Smedley
polo and those Topman shorts.
The multicoloured laces would provide a welcome break from the blue and white
colours and could act as a sly splash of colour in any outfit. These are
available from Coggles.com and cost £70.

Although we do enjoy talking about short shorts, there are alternatives. If you, like 99.9% of the population, hate ¾ shorts but don’t want shorts that can be overlapped by your boxers, then these Topman
tailored shorts could be the answer.
Now that the temperature is finally picking up, it may be time to start showing off your knees (although you should do some calf raises before hand, just for appearance sake). Topman’s tailored shorts sit slightly above the knee and are a happy medium for those who just want to dip their toes in the whole shorts trend. Being Topman, the price is an affordable £30.

Topman have a half price sale on so now’s the time to nab yourself some summer bargains. Their check shirt we featured as part of our Chris Taylor madras shirt picks is down to £18 and the geo print polo shirt will perk up your wardrobe in no time. £45 for a suede holdall is a bargain, and it’s great to have a bright red accessory. Finally, I couldn’t let a day pass without mentioning short shorts could I? Product links after the jump.

“You were on my mind at least nine tenths of yesterday, it seemed as if perhaps I’d gone insane. What is it about you that has commandeered my brain? Maybe it’s your…” Kimya Dawson’s brilliant lyrics ring through my head as I realise that it appears I have nothing better to do on a Saturday night than listen to the Juno soundtrack (heads up my friends, it’s great) and appear pensive and philosophical while typing away at my laptop. That is until you know what is causing me so much mental frustration- I am deciding upon my ‘theory’ (as named by Jason and furthered by Isabelle) regarding the devious short shorts trend.
Short shorts were a feature of last season’s shows and where better to take lead from than the trend-barometer that is the Marc by Marc Jacobs collection (right.) I was quite comfortably on the fence until I received a peculiar delivery from a well-intentioned but elderly great-uncle.

In his latest film André Benjamin (pictured at the preview) got a taste for short shorts, the kind that basketball players wore in the ’70s. Semi-Pro was released last week and is a Will Ferrell comedy about you guessed it, basketball in the ’70s.
Benjamin told the New York Times “by the time we started filming, the shorts were like a
second skin to me,” he says. “It seems like you can cut through the air
a little bit better in them.”
So will they feature in his upcoming Benjamin Bixby collection? Well maybe, the range is scheduled to come out in autumn and is inspired by college football circa 1935, André explains that Benjamin Bixby is someone who is "kind of like your uncle, or your granddad, and he has a
closet full of experiences and clothes, and he’s been around the
world".
I’ve got high hopes for this collection, André is a great dresser and visited Italian Factories and Parisian textile fairs to get some inside info. He even garnered some advice from Vogue’s Anna Wintour so I’m pretty sure it should be a hit. One question though, I love his outfit (which includes a Benjamin Bixby tie worn as a belt) but the trousers seem like they could do with a little tailoring, am I right?

Summer is the time for me to coax you out of your summer trousers and into shorts. Smart shorts are definitely appropriate in most offices, it’s just a matter of teaming them with the right things. Short-sleeved check shirts look good, as do smart t-shirts, keep flip-flops for the beach and wear clean canvas pumps instead. For the beach or the park anything goes, wear these American Apparel shorts for a casual, airy look. See after the jump for full outfit pick and product links.
