Arsenal transfer update: Sunzu confusion, Gonalons linked

By Stefano on February 27th, 2013

There is an interesting story in Here Is The City about the fate of the brilliantly named Stoppila Sunzu. If you remember rightly the Zambian defender Sunzu was apparently all lined up to be Arsenal’s first signing of the window with the association in his own country reporting that a move to North London was imminent.

And then it went odd, very odd. The player seemed destined for Reading and then Sunderland were reported to be interested and then nothing.

HITC asks the question what is going on with the player and puts the blame for the lack of activity squarely at the feet of the player’s team.

It says

The confusion stems around his agents and representatives who appear to have not been doing a very good job of representing their client’s best interests. They had reportedly informed the Zambia international, and any interested suitors, that his contract at current club TP Mazembe was invalid therefore he was eligible to leave on a free transfer.

In fact the DR Congo club, one of the richest football establishments in African football, are requesting a fee of £4 million as his contract is more than legally binding, a fact confirmed by Mazembe’s club president Moise Katumbi in an interview with the BBC last week:

“The matter has been resolved after we went through the contract with everyone and the player admitted his contract was still valid. The problem is that his handlers have been lying to him so that he rebels against us. We suspect they wanted to get all his transfer fees by declaring him a free agent. TP Mazembe is a professional club and we will never stand in the way of our players as long as the right procedure is followed.”

The club are apparently keen to cash in on one of their prize assets and £4 million would be enough to land the player. But it seems that for now at least he is going nowhere.

The Metro has an update on a player who is alleged to be one of Arsene Wenger’s long term targets.

Lyon midfielder Maxime Gonalons has apparently been tracked by Arsenal’s Mr French Football Gilles Grimandi for several months now and has put in a string of impressive performances. He’s a defensively minded midfielder who has only ever played for Lyon. The Metro reckons he will cost the Gunners around £12 million. Arsenal are reported to be tracking several midfielders including Etienne Capoue of Toulouse and Newcastle’s Chieck Tiote.

Arsenal update: last minute bids for Yanga-Mbiwa and Sunzu and Gourcuff on loan?

By Stefano on January 21st, 2013

Arsene Wenger said the other day that he liked to wait until the end of the window before he bid for the players he most wants. But what if other clubs move first? Well Arsene is going to have act quickly if he wants to secure the signing of Mapou Yanga-Mbiwa and Stoppila Sunzu both of whom are apparently on the verge of committing to other clubs.

Long-term target Mapou Yanga-Mbiwa, who was excellent for Montpelier against Arsenal in the Champions League, is apparently on his way to Newcastle with the club having agreed a £6.7m fee for the French international defender.

The Daily Mirror is suggesting that Wenger will offer the player the chance to play at The Emirates and will trump the Toon’s bid. What would make Yanga-Mbiwa such great value is that he can play as a central defender, but also a right back. If, as is possible, Bacary Sagna leaves the club in the summer then he would offer competition to Carl Jenkinson while replacing Johan Djorou as a reserve centre back.

If that deals doesn’t happen then Arsene might prefer to look again at one of the first tranfers targets of the window Zambia’s Stoppila Sunzu. The Mirror reports that although a deal with Reading appears almost done, Arsene Wenger may re-activate his interst in the defender, who is on AFCON duty, who could be picked up for less than £4 million.

Finally The Mail suggests that Arsenal have been offered Lyon’s midfield playmaker Yoann Gourcuff on loan. Gourcuff has been on Wenger’s radar for a long while, but it could be argued is too similar to many players that Arsenal already have in their squad. He has also endured a difficult twelve months dogged by injuries and poor form.

Arsenal’s first winter signing? Stoppila Sunzu apparently on his way

By Stefano on December 18th, 2012

It has not been officially confirmed yet, but it seems that Arsenal are on the verge of making their first signing of the winter transfer window. With a view to adding a bit of steel to his midfield Arsene Wenger has apparently targeted Zambian Stoppila Sunzu and there are suggestions from his home country that the signing is imminent.

Sunzu is on his way to London and he told the FA Zambia website

“I will be travelling to England to sign a deal with Arsenal after the friendly game against Tanzania. As we speak, Mr Katumbi’s personal consultant Salomon Eskadela is here in Zambia waiting to travel with me to England.

“I don’t know the details of the deal yet because I have not discussed with both Arsenal and TP Mazembe. However I spoke to both Mr Katumbi and Arsenal Manager Arsene Wenger who assured me that I would not be going to London for trials but to discuss personal terms and possibly sign a contract.”

The player is 23 and yet has been a staple in the Zambian team for several years. He is best known for scoring the winning penalty against Ivory Coast in the 2012 African Cup of Nations. He also has a goal or two to his name scoring 21 goals from his 53 appearances for his team TP Mazembe.

There are likely to be work permit issues to be sorted before he can join his new team.

If he does sign it casts a very real doubt on the future of Emmanuel Frimpong. So is Wenger about to replace Alex Song? Maybe.
