Seen on the street: the vintage briefcase

By admin on June 11th, 2009

Colin Chapman writes…

Spotted previously on the odd hipster about town, the vintage briefcase is definitely having a moment. On a recent journey from Soho back to Shoreditch, these battered but much prized bags were definitely evident on the street. We’re not talking the hideously square items that out-of-town businessmen carry their dreary worlds in – seemingly designed to collide with kneecaps on the Tube. Softer, roomier styles are the ones to look out for – including the daddy of all briefcases commonly known as ‘the doctor bag’ or Gladstone. And you don’t even have to get your hands grubby rummaging through charity stock as there seems to be a healthy selection available online.

WISHLIST: H&M A/W 2009 Crushed Velvet Coat

By Will Reid on May 13th, 2009

hmThe more I write about summer clothes, and slowly accept that summer isn’t actually coming, I look to next winter and start structuring my cold wardrobe. Coats are a notoriously hard thing to get right and a single inch too short or too long can ruin not only an entire look, but an entire wardrobe (well, almost.)

The Fashionisto
has lifted the lid on the latest H&M collection for A/W 2009 and this faux-crushed velvet coat has a bit of an edge on other high-street pieces. With what looks like a simple collar and in solid black, the material of this coat allows it to be easily worn with any items while being a stand-out piece in itself.

I would keep to simple tones but contrast fabrics and textures to build up the layers of an elaborate get-up. Throw in a bit of tacky bling-age to mix up the expensive looking coat but keep it minimal; garish garb is best when less.

Love The Look: Topman’s ‘Motel Arizona’ Trailer-Trash Cool!

By Will Reid on April 21st, 2009

motelarizona.pngI know, I know; Topman has become a bit of a regular feature on Brandish but when I noticed this look on the label’s website during my regular internet trawl, I couldn’t resist commenting.

While I’m not too sure about the rather peculiar Alice Dellal haircut (as highlighted in a previous Brandish post.) I think he gets off with it due to his incredible look- brash patter shirt, acid-washed jeans and skinny belt…but messy enough to avoid the overly-manicured style of the 80s fashionisto.

More to come on Topman’s ‘Motel Arizona’ look soon!

Top Five: Will’s Summer Wants!

By Will Reid on March 26th, 2009

Last summer I was down at Shiny Towers and the gloriously hot days were spent writing, chatting with my fellow Shinies, trying on Drop-Crotch jeans and touring the streets in search of aspirational street style. But despite all the joviality I didn’t quite anticipate the weather (although I refuse to take the blame for that one- when was the last time we had a proper summer?) and ended up the innocent victim of SSS (that’s Skinny jeans in Summer Syndrome.) This summer I am determined to get it right, which is why I have compiled this list of fashion needs (okay, wants.)

Thumbnail image for DSC00603.JPGb.JPG1. Lots of Extra-Hold Hairspray
Since Christmas and a happy accident haircut, I have been living with a bit of an 80s asymmetrical style. My super-thick hair means that I have to use extra-hold products which are effective but grease-free; the wet fro is never a good look! I will need lots of hairspray to combat the heat.

Brandish Does Boulevard: The Second Bout of Street Style!

By Will Reid on October 27th, 2008

This gallery showcases some of the hottest street style looks I’ve seen in quite a while. Granted, some of the photography is a bit shifty (and the background of sun-washed Camden during the summer is enough to provoke resentment from most Brits,) but these looks are on-trend and rival a lot of professionally styled magazine editorials.

Brandish loves street style and there will definitely be more to come in the next few months. Just prepare for rain drops on the camera lens.

Brandish Feature: Drop-Crotch Demo

By Will Reid on August 22nd, 2008

Drop-crotch jeans have been dubbed the ‘future of denim’ and ‘the next skinny jean.’ I am an unbelievable skinny devotee (yes, I am scarred after wearing them in Summer-heat London and not even joking) and for this reason, I decided to road-test an exclusive pre-production sample pair from Trousers London. I ventured into Covent Garden to get the public opinion on whether the jeans were ‘(Drop-)HOT!’ or ‘PANTS!’ Pitying glances, envious looks, angry words and self-styling monologues; the Drop-Crotch jeans certainly attracted attention-but was it praise or pity? Read on for the full report with street-style pics, interviews, comments and product details.

Brandish does Boulevard: Neal’s Yard

By Will Reid on August 8th, 2008

Here on Brandish we love a bit of sartorial realism. While Jason deals with cool buys and indie-labels, I tend to veer towards the bright lights of magazines and the high-octane glamour of ridiculously expensive items (WISHLIST anyone?) and the glossy adverts they inhabit.

I do love the high-street and so, with editor’s camera in hand and a trusty phone in the other (who knows what pickle one could get into asking for photos on the streets of Camden?) I set off to find London’s fashionistos.

Everyday Fashion Miracles: The Sartorialist

By Will Reid on March 6th, 2008

Gccelweb_2I know that it is an obvious choice and not avant-garde in the slightest, but The Sartorialist is one of those gems that just makes you smile. Increasingly, Scott (Mr. Sartorialist himself) Schuman is incorporating more and more menswear into his revolutionary blogging venture. The photos within this post (all property of The Sartorialist) are just a few of Scott’s archive of great shots. Street-style is a major influence within the fashion world right now and everyone from Henry Holland to Ricardo Tisci at Givenchy are taking inspiration from the World’s various street-walkers (no naughtiness there.) Also, despite the location of these shots usually being fashion shows and parties, most of the looks are wearable and Scott makes sure to interview his subjects, getting information on suit sources and blazer bargains. Take a look for yourself and help me spread the fashion virus throughout the Globe (God knows some people need it.)

See after the jump for more examples of Mr. Schuman’s fantastic stuff.

Trends: Watch & Wear-70s Street King

By ShinyMedia on January 9th, 2008

Snoopuomovogue
Huggy Bear, Snoop Dogg, Andre 3000; no matter how old you are, there has always been that outrageously cool, pimped-out personality. In the latest issue of L’Uomo Vogue, Snoop Dogg gets kitted out in clothes fit for a street legend.
Purple velvet suits, golf-check trousers and the obligatory afro complete the look but despite its eccentric ingredients can, if styled correctly, make up an approaching trend that can be woven into your wardrobe. Take some wide-leg trousers, a pair of brogues, a patterned jumper and a bold shirt as a starting point. Accessorise with elaborate ties, belts and a fabric-blend bowler bag for a strong look, see after the jump for image and product details.

NOTE: using words that you imagine to be street lingo (you know the ones) will in no way add to this look.
